COMBINE INGREDIENTS for a Memorable 2012

APRIL 20: Healthcare Symposium

Over 200 professionals and caregivers attended the second healthcare symposium presented by Charles E. Smith Life Communities and Suburban Hospital and Sibley Memorial Hospital, both members of Johns Hopkins Medicine. Transitions in Care: Perspectives for Clinicians and Caregivers shared successful models and techniques as patients move from one healthcare setting to another.

MAY 16: Aunt Minnie Spring Event

An “Aunt-iques” dinner enabled guests to bring their treasures to professional appraisers. Remy Freeman and Alisa Rulnick were chairs; honoree Natalie S. West received the 2012 Aunt Minnie Goldsmith Award.

MAY 30: Annual Meeting

Residents of Ring House posed for last year’s annual report, putting a personal face on our “Game On: Bringing our Plans to Life” theme. At the 102nd Annual Meeting, guests began the evening with “hard hat” tours of the new Elsie and Marvin Dekelboum Therapy Center. Ivan Silverman received the Hymen Goldman Award, and Andrew S. Friedlander presented the Chair’s Award to the Senior Management Group. Jeffrey Distenfeld chaired the meeting.

AUGUST 23: Dekelboum Therapy Center Dedication

This spectacular new space for recovery serves 800 patients each year. A partnership between the Hebrew Home and the generosity of the Elsie and Marvin Dekelboum Family Foundation made this renovation possible. Gail Dekelboum Hartstein, Mark Hughes and Steve Oram, three of the four Foundation board members, attended the ribbon-cutting ceremonies. Other areas with a fresh new look in the Wasserman Residence include a welcoming Fink Family Lobby, ELNO Mall, and Rutstein Wi-Fi Café.

SEPTEMBER 12: Ratner Salon Dedication

Newly designed salons in the Wasserman and Smith-Kogod Residences enhance the experience for Hebrew Home residents who make over 3,800 appointments annually. We thank the Washington Ratner Family, and Dennis and Warren Ratner, for their strong, on-going support.

DECEMBER Two Quality Improvement projects were selected for poster presentation by the Maryland Patient Safety Center, a national leader in patient safety. The Hebrew Home of Greater Washington is the only long-term care organization presenting posters at the Center’s 2013 annual meeting, which brings together over 1,200 healthcare providers to accelerate evidence-based solutions.

SEPTEMBER 30: Home Run 10k/5k/Fun Run

The race, chaired by Marc Schlesinger, brought together area runners to raise money for residents on our campus. Through a generous donation, the first 450 registered runners received an authentic Manchester United F.C. jersey.

SEPTEMBER 6 / OCTOBER 18 NOVEMBER 4

“Remember This” Lectures

A new lecture series sponsored by the Hurwitz Lecture Fund offered three free seminars to caregivers and families addressing crucial topics in dementia and memory care.

OCTOBER 18An Evening with John Feinstein

John Feinstein spoke at a new event especially for sports aficionados chaired by Joe Hoffman. Over 90 people came to Woodmont Country Club to learn about our campus and get the “inside” scoop on sports. Guests received John’s latest

book, Mystery at the Olympics: Rush for the Gold.

DECEMBER 17Cohen-Rosen House Dedication

The sixth residence on our campus is specially designed to meet individualized needs for memory care. Lead donors Judy and Richie Cohen and other generous donors helped create this stunning new home for 18 residents.

DECEMBER 13Starlight Lounge with Sara Bareilles

Singer/song writer Sara Bareilles entertained over 500 guests at the fabulous Starlight Lounge chaired by Carolyn and David Ruben.

NOVEMBER 11President’s Circle Dinner

2 The Charles E. Smith Life Communities

OUR RECIPE FOR SUCCESSCharles E. Smith, whose name unites our campus services, had a personal recipe for successful living. He

called it his “Prescription for Longevity,” and it must have worked well because he reached 94, vibrant and

influential. He recommended waking at 7 and beginning the day by considering, “How can I help my

community?” His recipe included applying olive oil over the entire body (an idea he noted was borrowed from

King Solomon), 20 minutes of stretching, eight glasses of water a day, no smoking or alcohol, and in pleasant

weather, squeezing in some golf, swimming or brisk walking.

Charles E. Smith Life Communities also has a “Recipe for Success.” What are our key ingredients?

Infuse with Generous Amounts of Community Support■ Philanthropic giving – our “bread and butter.” In 2012, we wrapped up a successful Centennial

Campaign chaired by Audrey and Marc Solomon. We continue to be especially appreciative of the

continuing support of a generous community in light of governmental reimbursement cutbacks and

growing community need.■ Volunteer leadership – our “iron chefs.” Capable individuals serve selflessly on our lay Board of

Governors, committees and task forces, bringing expertise in diverse fields to benefit our campus.■ Service volunteers of all ages sweeten day-to-day life for our 1,000+ elders – a “drizzle of honey.”

Stir Thoroughly with Quality Care and Services■ Our State Pay-for-Performance rating and Federal 4-star rating confirm the strides made in quality services.

Two of our quality projects were selected as poster presentations at the Maryland Patient Safety Center’s

national conference; we are the only long-term care organization chosen. The two quality projects are (1)

Closing the Gap in Transitional Care: Medication Reconciliation between Hospital Discharge and Admission

to Long Term Care (joint project with Suburban/Johns Hopkins) and (2) Adopting Evidenced-Based Best

Practices for the Prevention and Resolution of Pressure Ulcers in the Long-term Care Environment.

OUR MISSIONThe mission of the Charles E. Smith Life Communities

is to fulfill Jewish values by providing a continuum of

quality services for elders and their families, and affirm

our commitment to the dignity of each individual.

OUR VISIONThe Charles E. Smith Life Communities will be

viewed and supported by our community as the leader

and provider of choice in delivering innovative and

compassionate services for elders. Our services and

programs are open to all in the community.

Annual Report for 2012 3

■ Cutting-edge programming includes person-centered care, our innovative approach to memory care, and ensuring our

organizational values permeate our campus.■ Our broad spectrum of services addresses community needs for options in care, choices for senior living and successful

outcomes for rehabilitation to be able to return home. In 2012, we dedicated the spectacular new Cohen-Rosen House for

memory care and opened the Dekelboum Therapy Center, and our residents are enjoying the new Ratner Beauty Salons,

ELNO Mall, Fink Family Lobby and Rutstein Wi-Fi Café in the Wasserman Residence.

Steward our Resources Responsibly■ The organization was able to refinance its debt, significantly lowering those capital-related costs.■ Our ability to control costs effectively has been a critical component of our stability over the long term and particularly in

the past several years of economic downturn and uncertainty.

Blend Well with Dedicated Staff■ It is amazing to note that 91 of our staff have worked with us 20 years or more, and 281 have 10 or more years of service. We

include in this report the names of our dedicated nurses and nursing assistants, physicians, housekeepers and cooks, computer

specialists and engineers, accountants and administrative assistants, and all those essential to the care of our residents.■ Our “Great Place to Work” initiatives position us as an employer of choice in the marketplace.

The pages of this report acknowledge the hundreds of individuals who have taken active roles in fulfillment of our mission

of community service and in contributing to our recipe for success. It’s a recipe with staying power, one that is destined to

remain a “family favorite” long into the future.

Andrew S. Friedlander, Chair Warren R. Slavin, President/CEO

CHARLES E. SMITHCharles E. Smith Life Communities takes its name from a visionary leader in the Washington

Jewish community. Charles E. Smith (1901-1995) was a persuasive philanthropist who

generously supported the most vulnerable in our society. As president of the

Hebrew Home from 1959–1962, he boldly laid the groundwork for the

Home’s 1969 move to its current Rockville campus.

Recognizing the need for continued philanthropic support and the emerging

continuum of care on our campus, his son and son-in-law, Robert H. Smith

and Robert P. Kogod, and their families made an extraordinary $12 million

investment in our future. Our name, adopted in May 2006, unites our entities,

sustains both the legacy and leadership of Charles E. Smith and honors

the memory of a remarkable leader.

Community partnership is behind every improvement we make and is the force that keeps us resilient and durable. Among the ways that the generous contributions we receive from individuals, private foundations and government grants will be used this year are: to support resident care, to transform our care environment through new construction and renewal of our existing facilities, and to enhance our endowment for a secure future. As we move into 2013, charitable contributions will help to bridge the gap between public reimbursements for Medicaid residents and the actual cost of care, and help fund the growth in programs and services described in this report.

AUNT MINNIE GOLDSMITH AWARDMrs. Charles Goldsmith, who was born in 1871, opened her heart to all those

in distress. Lovingly known as “Aunt Minnie,” she took it upon herself to lead

fundraising efforts on behalf of the Hebrew Home and its elderly residents.

Each spring, she celebrated her birthday by inviting friends

to a luncheon to raise funds for the Home. The Aunt Minnie

Luncheon, which draws hundreds of

women, continues that tradition, and the

award in her name is presented annually

“for idealistic service to humanity and community welfare.”

KITTY DAVIS VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARDThis award is presented annually at the Volunteer Day luncheon in honor of Kitty Davis,

an exceptional volunteer at the Hebrew Home for many years.

Since the founding of the Hebrew Home in

1910, we have counted on the charitable support

of the community to help us fulfill our mission

to shelter and care for the area’s frail elderly.

For 54 years, the annual Guardian Campaign

has provided this critical unrestricted support.

These dedicated Guardian Campaign Committee

members spearheaded the 2012 campaign, which

raised $847,000 to help the Hebrew Home fulfill

its mission.

Campaign Chairs: Jeffrey S. Distenfeld and Jeffrey J. Pargament

Guardian Campaign Chairs Jeffrey Distenfeld and Jeffrey Pargament presented a check to CEO Warren Slavin and Chair Andy Friedlander at the Starlight Lounge, showing the amount raised as of December 13.

BUILDERS OF THE FUTURE Builders of the Future Society members have taken steps today to benefit our residents into the future. They have created

legacies in their wills, through charitable gift annuities, and by naming the Hebrew Home as a beneficiary of a trust,

retirement plan, or insurance policy.

Each year, we welcome new and current Builders of the Future Society members at a festive luncheon. We appreciate each of

these generous commitments.

PERMANENT AND DESIGNATED FUNDS The Hebrew Home’s resources are strengthened by gifts from generations of donors, including those who have established

Permanent or Designated Funds. Named permanent funds can be created in memory of someone dear, in honor of a person

or an event, or for the direct benefit of those we serve.

The term “Permanent Fund” indicates the original gift creates an endowment from which earnings will be distributed. A “Designated

Fund” is totally expended for the specific purpose chosen by the donor. We owe all of the wonderful donors who have created or

donated to these funds during 2012 a debt of gratitude for their generosity and compassion.

YOUTH PHILANTHROPYThe Harold and Shirley Robinson H2YP Youth Philanthropy Program is an innovative program that gives local high

school students the opportunity to act as a foundation board, listening to presentations about proposed projects and

coming to a consensus on how charitable dollars should be allocated on our campus. The 2012 participants funded a

geriatric training arm for clinical staff training, electronic media for Revitz residents, life-enriching Shakespeare and

Park Naturalist programming and adaptive equipment for recreation therapy.
