The purpose of Student Life at UC San Diego is to:

Foster the development of students beyond the classroom , build

community on campus, encourage involvement in student life, meet the

daily needs of student through the provision of services and facilities,

advocate the needs of students to campus leaders , foster student pride and

affiliation with UC San Diego, assist the University in its efforts

to recruit and retain students

Engaging Students in Campus Life

Serving our Heroes The University Centers Advisory Board allocated space for a

Student Veterans Resource Center at the Student Center, with an

anticipated opening of November 2013. The center is intended to improve

student life for veterans by providing a community space where they can bond

with other student veterans, receive information, and access needed

resources. The project is a collaborative effort between University Centers,

the Student Veterans Organization, Center for Student Involvement, and

the UCSD Veterans Workgroup, and is being partially funded by the

Student Fee Advisory Committee.

Participants in CSI Communication & Leadership programs (43%), Members of Greek organizations (64%) Student organization Principal Members (69%) are more likely to respond that they are satisfied or very satisfied with their social experience at UCSD

Student Legal Services hosted an Attorney Networking Night to introduce students to local career resources

3,369 students participated in Communication and Leadership workshops offered by CSI

With more vigor than any previous year, the Graduate Student Association hosted a rollout of new social-hour activities with the support and leadership of University Centers. The new events and attracted a total of 688 attendees at all events.

Associated Students allocated $370,364 to student organizations for events and programming.

1,306 students took advantage of the AS Safe Rides program. 8,947 students are registered for the free service to ensure they get home safely. 79% of students indicate that AS Safe Rides is an important or very important service.

Promoting Diversity

Promoting Cultural Events on Campus

University Centers partnered with the Graduate Student Association and MEChA to host a sugar skull painting event in honor of Dia de Los Muertos at The Loft. More than 60 students participated, which included a cultural discussion of the history and symbolism of the holiday.

The A.S. Graphic Studio’s diversity projects include developing artwork and apparel for the Afrikan Black Coalition (ABC) Conference, creating a website and collateral for the 3rd Annual UC San Diego Powwow, developing artwork for Black History Month, designing collateral for Contributing to a Diverse Culture at UC San Diego faculty brochure, developing artwork for two large campus-wide surveys to include the Campus Climate Survey at UC San Diego and 2013 Student Satisfaction Survey.

ArtPower! presented Mobile Stories, smartphone citizen journalism that reflected the content of the Arab Spring, in a student film workshop.

Creating Safe Spaces The Contemplation Lounge in Price Center West, a safe space for contemplation and meditation, was upgraded with new wall panels and carpeting.

The Black Resource Center opened in Spring 2013 at the Student Center. Student Life and University Centers collaborated with the Black Student Union to select a location and create a functional, multi-use place for the community to gather, learn and expand the discourse on African-American and

Black history and culture.

Conference Hosts

The Associated Students Office of External Affairs hosted the University of California Student Association Conference at UC San Diego. Over 500 stu-dents from each of the 10 UC campuses came together to work on campaigns related to higher education over the course of 4 days.

of students from across the

country.

Encouraging Women in the Sciences GradWISE (Graduate Women In

Science and Engineering) host-

ed a variety of events ranging

from a Gender Buffet titled

“Women in STEMM: Problems

and Progress” and several for-

mal and informal sessions with

the

VC-EDI as guest host.

Efforts in

Sustainability

University Centers was

acknowledged by the

Student Sustainability

Collective for its

collaboration with Yogurt

World, who was awarded

the UC San Diego Most

Sustainable Food

Vendor for their

composting program.

University Centers hosted the Sustainable Food Expo event in the Price Center Ballrooms

Service to the Campus University Centers Offers Expanded Food Options Taco Villa, an authentic Mexican food stand, is expected to open fall 2014 in the Student Center.

Construction is underway on D’lush: a new social lounge and eatery in Price Center East, featuring comfort foods and specialty non-alcoholic drinks.

Concepts for a new chicken restaurant in the Plaza Food Court are being reviewed with an anticipated selection by the end of 2013 and opening winter 2014.

Making Price Center One-Stop Shopping Salon 101 opened during the winter quarter at Price Center East. The full services salon offers hair, nail, and skin care services.

Co-Curricular Learning Experiences

Collaboration with the Colleges ArtPower! Film curated and led the 2nd annual Film Practicum with High Tech

High Media Arts and Sixth College

CSI partnered with the Sixth College practicum to offer academic credit to Sixth

College Clinton Global Initiative University participants as they work towards their

commitment with their faculty advisor.

Expert Opinions ASCE partnered with the Student Organized Voter Access Committee (SOVAC) to

produce a new, debate-viewing event that included a professor lecture on the

main issues in the national and local elections.

Career Development Student Legal Services offered pre-law mentoring to UC San Diego students.

SLS also offers a legal research and writing internship program to undergraduate

students, and SLS staff serve as advisors and mentors to pre-law organizations

such as Phi Alpha Delta Law fraternity, UCSD Mock Trial, the Community Law

Project, and the Pre-law Society.

Approximately 68% of the students

who completed the Discover the

Law program through Student

Legal Services expressed that

they were interested in a career in

workshops by staff from local law

schools about the application and

admissions process and careers in

the legal field.

Events for Students Diversifying Campus Events ASCE hosted film screenings, dances, a concert, a comedy show and a live debate-viewing event. Great progress has been made to ensure that ASCE is more than just a concert-producing organization.

Celebrating Graduating Seniors The All Campus Graduation Celebration was reimagined as a social hour event with local food trucks, more diverse food options, and an earlier start time. The new format resulted in more guest tickets being sold than in any previous year.

Collaboration to Promote Dialogue The College Democrats and College Republicans student organizations successfully held a bi-partisan forum at UC San Diego for mayoral candidates.

Supporting the Community

Benefiting the San Diego Community

CSI-Community Service teamed up with Volunteer50 for the annual Meet the Beach Clean-up at Scripps Beach, as well as at the 33rd annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service benefiting Zamorano Fine Arts Academy. 225 people attended these two events.

ASCE expanded its annual Battle of the Bands by partnering with FM94/9 in support of the Sun God for a Cause campaign to benefit the It’s About the Music fund for San Diego pubic schools. Through this partnership, ASCE was able to develop a fundraising silent auction and also provide the winning band with the opening performance at the Sun God Festival, as well as a performance at the FM94/9 music festival.

Making a Difference Around the World This year, 17 UC San Diego students were admitted to Clinton Global Initiative University (CGIU) 2013, hosted at Washington University

in St. Louis.

In the fall of 2012, UCSD was accepted into the CGIU Network. UCSD is now one of 16 colleges and universities that support, mentor, and provide seed funding to leading student innovators and entrepreneurs on their respective campuses.
