The Open Land Trust is very pleased to

welcome Colden R. Battey, JR.

to the Board of Directors. Colden has been a

partner in the law firm of Harvey & Battey since

1963 and served as Chairman of Beaufort County

Council for 8 years. He is also a past president of

the Beaufort County Bar Association, a Director

of the South Carolina Bar Association and of the

South Carolina Trial Lawyers Association. He

has long been involved in many community

organizations having served as a Commodore

of the Water Festival and as Chairman of the

United Way Fund. In 1995 Colden became a

director of the Nemours Wildlife Foundation

and served until 2008 when he was elected

Chairman of the Foundation, a position that

he currently occupies. Colden and his wife,

Patricia, live on Lady’s Island.

Kristin WilliamsKristin Williams recently joined the Open Land Trust

as the Director of Stewardship. Kristin came to us from

Marsh Harbour, Abaco in the Bahamas where she was the

Executive Director of a conservation organization, Friends

of the Environment, for the past 10 years. As Director of

Stewardship, Kristin is responsible for all management

activities pertaining to the Land Trust’s fee properties and

conservation easements. In her spare time, Kristin can often

be found on the water with her two young children, Gray

and Ford and her husband, Lloyd.

NEW BOArD MEMBEr

FIFTH rUrAL & CrITICAL LAND PrESErVATION BOND rEFErENDUM HEADED TO BALLOTBeaufort County voters will have the opportunity on November 6 to vote for an additional

$25,000,000 in general obligation bonds to fund the rural & Critical Land Preservation

Program, the County’s innovative and long running land conservation program. The Program

has enjoyed strong voter support since its first bond referendum in 2002 and has protected

23,929 acres in Beaufort County including such diverse historic and cultural treasures as

Altamaha, the Ford Shell ring, Mitchelville, Fort Fremont, Paige Point Cemetery, Pinckney

Point and the mid-County greenway corridor of Lemon Island. Over half of the Program’s

acreage has been protected through conservation easements, which keeps ownership of the

property in private hands and on the tax rolls. The Open Land Trust has managed the Program

for the County since 2009 and is proud to be entrusted with the responsibility of working with

willing landowners to protect the richly abundant natural resources of this special corner of the

Lowcountry.

A Fond Farewell TO EINAr TrOSDALEinar Trosdal rotated off of the Open Land Trust Board of Directors at the beginning of 2018.

We will greatly miss his wise counsel on all matters financial and we will continue to applaud

him for protecting his beautiful family land in Bluffton. Einar donated a conservation easement

to the Trust on 50 acres of Linden Plantation on the May river in 2009. We appreciate Einar’s

conservation ethic and we know that he will remain involved with Open Land Trust.

On the evening of May 2, the Sun City Bird Club enjoyed a successful

birdwatching excursion to Widgeon Point. Widgeon Point is a 165-acre tract

located on Highway 170 situated between the Chechessee river and the Broad

river and is a collaborative project between the Open Land Trust and Beaufort

County. We hope to have the property open to the public in 2019. With a mix

of various habitats supporting a rich diversity of wildlife and plant species,

the Preserve, once opened, is sure to provide the public with extraordinary

opportunities to observe and absorb the natural beauty of the Lowcountry. Bird

Club president Doreen Cubie stated, “Our best birds were a group of about

20 whimbrels that were in the high marsh next to the driveway. We also saw

a female painted bunting down near the river.” In just a short period of time

the birders were treated to sightings of a wide variety of species: Whimbrel,

Laughing Gull, Northern Mockingbird, Turkey Vulture, Black Vulture, Boat-

tailed Grackle, Great Blue Heron, red-winged Blackbird, Great Egret, Blue Jay,

Great Crested Flycatcher, Mourning Dove, red-bellied Woodpecker, Northern

Cardinal, Bald Eagle, Yellow-throated Warbler, Orchard Oriole Wilson’s Snipe,

Pine Warbler, Painted Bunting, Carolina Wren, Carolina Chickadee, Blue-Gray,

Gnatcatcher, Green Heron and Snowy Egret.

GArDEN CLUB CrEATES Butterfly GArDENThe Beaufort Garden Club is in the process of creating a butterfly garden at Brewer Memorial Park on

Factory Creek. Brewer Memorial Park is located on Sea Island Drive at the base of the Woods Memorial

Bridge east of the Lady’s Island Boat ramp. This park was created through a successful partnership between

the Open Land Trust, the City of Beaufort, Beaufort County and private citizens. The garden will provide

food and habitat for the dwindling number of pollinators, namely butterflies and bees. Many species of

pollinators are faced with the threat of extinction and gardens like this are a way to increase the number

of pollinators in urban environments. The Land Trust was thrilled when the Garden Club presented the

concept and we look forward to incorporating more outreach initiatives associated with the project.

BATTErY CrEEK Clean UpOn Saturday, March 17th a dedicated group of volunteers from Marine Corps Air

Station Beaufort, the City of Beaufort and the Open Land Trust Board of Directors

helped to clean up the marsh front along Battery Creek. The clean up was organized in

conjunction with the City’s Boundary Street redevelopment efforts. Approximately 20

volunteers collected several bags of trash and did some selective pruning to open the

view for passing motorists and pedestrians traveling along Boundary Street.

The 47th Annual Meeting of Beaufort County

Open Land Trust was held on April 4th at our

new office location at Crystal Lake Park on

Lady’s Island Drive. It was a great opportunity to

showcase this passive park developed by Beaufort

County. The 25 acre park includes the “green”

office building renovated by the County and a

boardwalk leading to Crystal Lake. Plans are in

the works for the boardwalk to be extended all the

way around the lake. Members enjoyed socializing

and celebrating our recent land protection

successes as reported by President Alex Shuford.

SHELL POINT BOAT LANDING ON ArCHEr’S CrEEK PErMANENTLY PrOTECTED

In 2017, the Open Land Trust accepted ownership of a 2.5-acre parcel tucked deep in the Shell Point subdivision informally known

as the “Shell Point Boat Landing.” The original developers of Shell Point had intended this parcel to be developed into an amenity for the

neighborhood with water frontage, a boat landing, a dock and playground. However, over time those amenities were never constructed and

the property remained in its natural vegetated state.

The ecological features of this property include forested uplands, emergent wetland maritime forest and tidally-influenced marsh

frontage on Archer’s Creek, a tributary of the Broad river flowing into Port royal Sound. A dry creek runs from east to west through the

tract that occasionally floods Broad river Drive at very high tides.

The public benefits resulting from OLT ownership of Shell Point Boat Landing include protection of water quality associated with

Archer’s Creek and the Broad river, storm surge protection, the scenic view of upland forests from those waterways, the relatively natural

habitat of the property and scenic forested road frontage along the public roadway of Broad river Drive.

Williams attended the 2018 Southeast Land and Community

Conservation Conference hosted by the Land Trust Alliance in

Chattanooga, Tennessee from March 16-18. The conference featured

two days of intense workshops that covered a wide range of topics

and provided new tools and ideas, many of which have already been

implemented at the Open Land Trust. With over 70 land trusts

in attendance conferences like this one are a great opportunity to

connect with one another.

In December, the OLT was deeded ownership of Bay Pointe Vista Lot

42, a pristine 2.8-acre hummock island located a stone’s throw away

from the southern tip of Lands End Plantation on St. Helena Island.

The island pictured on this report cover, is characterized by two

towering loblolly pines rising above the maritime forest and emergent

wetlands surrounded by tidal marsh flats covered with yellow oxalis,

glasswort and black needlerush. Well-worn wildlife trails crisscross

the island. This undeveloped parcel will remain forever in its natural

vegetative state as open space and wildlife habitat. As this property

is located within the Bay Pointe Vista community, it was at risk for

residential development had it remained in private ownership. The

public benefits associated with its protection include wildlife habitat,

water quality associated with Crab Creek and the Beaufort river, and

the scenic view of this island from those well-travelled waterways.
