Our MissionThe Mission of KIDS IN CAMP is to make the wonder of a camp experience available to kids from all backgrounds. As they learn about themselves and others in a camper-focused program, they gain positive memories that will last a lifetime.

The camp experience teaches cooperation, acceptance of others, sportsmanship, tolerance and an environmental ethic in a unique way that is impossible to duplicate elsewhere. Each year KIDS IN CAMP will sponsor children to attend one of over 300 camps throughout Ontario, all accredited by the Ontario Camps Association.

Our Vision Every child deserves the opportunity to play, have fun, and make friends in a safe camp environment. Our vision is that no child would be prevented from attending camp due to financial considerations. We are committed to helping as many children as possible participate in this unique opportunity.

Our ValuesEquity ¥ Empathy ¥ Accountability ¥ Quality

2013 was a banner year for KIC! There is no experience for a child quite like a summer camp experience, but especially for those who might not be able to attend camp without the financial assistance from KIC. In partnership with the camp of the child's choice, along with the parents themselves, in 2013 we were able to financially assist 305 children attend 51 different OCA accredited camps for a total of 664 weeks. However, we could not begin to assist so many children, or in fact any children at all, to enjoy a memorable summer camp experience each year without a legion of passionate volunteers who give so freely of their time. KIC is totally a volunteer-driven organization and is managed by a Board of eight Directors who are all current or former OCA Camp Owners and/or Directors.

KIC is a registered charity. We do not have an endowment fund of any kind. To carry out our mission and mandate each year, we absolutely rely on and are most grateful to: our wonderful donors, fundraising partners, supporters of all KIC-related events, corporate sponsors, and the OCA accredited camps that provide the summer experiences that last a lifetime. Individual donations to KIC may be made securely through our website at any time.

We look forward, proudly and with excitement, to the opportunity to send many more children to camp in 2014 and the summers to come.

THE GRAND KIC, APRIL 9, 2013

A large crowd of camp leaders and supporters gathered at the Eglinton Grand in Toronto to enjoy one another’s company, drinks, dinner and a silent auction followed by an engaging conversation between Steve Paikin, of TVO’s The Agenda and Cynthia Wesley-Esquimaux, Ph. D. on the topic, Sharing Our Canadian Roots. The Hon. Carolyn Bennett, M.D., M.P., Member of the Parliamentary Committee for Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, introduced the speakers. Cynthia, Chippewa of Georgina Island First Nation and Vice Provost (Aboriginal Affairs) at Lakehead University, has devoted her life to building bridges of understanding between people. She strongly believes that for diverse cultures to live side by side with respect, we begin the process with a conversation.

We are grateful to Carolyn Bennett, Steve Paikin and Cynthia Wesley-Esquimaux for their contribution to the event. We acknowledge the efforts of Chairs, Barb and Peter Gilbert, and their planning committee. We are grateful to all those who supported the event with their attendance and participation resulting in raising $8,000 to send children to camp.

PASS THE MUSIC ON, March 1, 2013

All evening long, Toronto’s Revival Bar rocked with the music of Steven Page of Barenaked Ladies fame at a fundraiser for Kids in Camp. Over five hundred current and former campers joined in a celebration of camp music and the camp spirit. We appreciate the work of the organizers, the assistance of many volunteers and the enthusiastic participation of hundreds of music lovers whose efforts raised $33,500 to give many more children the benefit of a summer camp experience.

Steering committee: Jonny Lightman, Chair Jordy Beale, Sol Birenbaum, Laura Cappe, Elaine Cole, Jian Magen

Team Kybro, comprised of Kawabi Staff Alumni, Jeff Brown, Jeff Clarke, Brian Corrigan, Tony Kime, Evan MacDonald, Kent Millar, and Kirk Sloan organized a charity golf tournament at the Maples of Ballantrae in Stouffville on May 11. The Kawabi Reunion Team chose KIC as the recipient of the money raised at their 2013 event. Credit for almost half of the $8,350 donation to KIC goes to former Kawabi Director, Bruce Harris. Bruce generously donated Kawabi canoes to any alumni who made a $500 donation to KIC. Fundraising games on the course and a silent auction added to the fun.
