Dear Friends,

Our most recent annual reports have had a common theme—

growth. We are growing food distribution to meet demand (nearly

17 million pounds this year!). We are growing nutrition education

programs like Cooking Matters to build food literacy. We are

growing new access points for healthy food, including the new

Curbside Market. We have literally grown thousands of pounds of

food at community gardens and our urban farm. And of course, we

are growing as an organization, in both size and impact.

But we’ve done more than just grow. We’ve focused on strategies

that go beyond charity. Over the past several years we have

strategically developed programs that focus on the root causes

of hunger – not just the symptoms. And in 2013, we began our

transformation from a food bank that responds to hunger to a

regional food hub that prevents hunger.

In June, we closed out our three-year strategic plan and I’m proud

to say that we accomplished ALL of our major objectives. These

successes have paved the way for our food hub transformation,

and so has your support. Without you, we would not be able

address the needs of our community. I want to thank you for

your on-going generosity and commitment, and ask you to “stay-

tuned” to our developing food hub activities. With your help,

we’ll continue to leverage the power of food to build a healthier

community.

Building a Healthy Community TogetherIn 2010, Foodlink launched a pilot urban farm stand as a first step toward increasing food access through market-based initiatives. Our goal was two-fold: to open new access points for fresh produce, and to prove that there was a demand for this product in underserved, low income neighborhoods. Both goals were accomplished, and our Urban Farm Stand Program grew to 12 unique sites by summer 2013, which sold more than 25,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables. Still, Foodlink experienced barriers in reaching those who lacked mobility, including the elderly and disabled. Luckily, Citizens Bank was looking for ways to bolster Rochester

neighborhoods—and a partnership was born. Thanks to the generosity of Citizens Bank Foundation and its Growing Communities initiative, we are tackling the issue of food access. A major grant provided the necessary funds to launch the Curbside Market. The Curbside Market is a social enterprise of Foodlink – a “produce aisle on wheels,” that sells affordable, fresh, locally-

sourced produce to approximately 26 sites around Rochester. Citizens Bank and Foodlink unveiled the new 18-foot Curbside Market right as our fiscal year was coming to a close. We are excited to share the results of the initiative in next year’s Annual Report. Foodlink is thankful for Citizens Bank, for investing in our growing communities!

Working Together to End HungerEveryone in the Rochester region knows Wegmans, but what you may not know is the extent of Wegmans’ support for Foodlink. 35 years ago, Foodlink and Wegmans partnered to end hunger in our community. Since then, Wegmans has donated tens of millions of pounds of food, sponsored fundraisers such as Festival of Food and Check Out Hunger, and provided financial support to several Foodlink programs. But that is only half the story. Wegmans has also maximized its relationship with Foodlink by fostering a culture of giving among its employees through volunteerism. Wegmans employees, from cashiers to corporate staff, volunteer their valuable time at Foodlink all throughout the year. For example, Pittsford Wegmans Front End has volunteered for years,

offering cashiers the opportunity to give back to their community and learn about their local food bank. The Center for Innovative Services (CIS) volunteer regularly to pack kids’ bags for the BackPack Program as a team building activity. The Wegmans Hillside Work-Scholarship Program volunteered to sort through thousands of pounds of food donations. The Geneseo Wegmans team volunteers at a local mobile pantry site to help reach an underserved population of families in need. Wegmans Corporate

Office helped shine a light on ROC The Day by volunteering with AT&T to pack produce bags for the 2012 holiday season. In fact, employees at all of the 21 Wegmans stores in Foodlink’s service area have volunteered or toured the Foodlink facility, familiarizing their staff with Foodlink’s mission and operations. For Wegmans staff, Foodlink is not just a logo on a coupon near the register, it’s a community partner in which they invest their valuable resources and time. We are forever grateful for their support.
