Everyone matters at ACC. …it is the people — not the brick and mortar — that make our College a special place.

More than 1,000 students last year received financial assistance from the Foundation because of donors like yourself.

Message from ACCF President, Dr. Aaron Noble

A lamance Community College is an amazing institution comprised of amazing individuals dedicated to improving the lives of others. The people and businesses of Alamance County and surrounding area that support ACC are equally amazing. Despite our difficult economic

times many individuals and businesses stepped forward and generously contributed to the Foundation’s annual scholarship fund drive, resulting in another successful campaign.

As my term as Foundation president nears its end, it is difficult for me to express my feelings about this institution and the people who make it so unique. Everyone matters at ACC. From the leadership of Dr. Nadelman, to our caring and capable instructional staff, to those who serve in administrative and other support capacities on which the College depends, all are committed to the same goal — providing our students a quality educational experience for life. ACC does this extremely well.

While we are blessed to have exceptional facilities that rival any other community college in the state, it is the people--not brick and mortar--that make our College a special place. The same can be said of our many donors, whose financial support makes it possible for many students to attend ACC. It would be difficult, if not impossible, for some students to even be here were it not for your generosity. For this I am extremely grateful, and on behalf of the entire Foundation board I thank you.

I am proud to be a graduate of ACC, and to have had this opportunity to serve my alma mater. Thank you very much for what you’ve done and continue to do for Alamance Community College!

Message from ACC President, Dr. Martin H. Nadelman

A s you peruse this year’s Foundation calendar and get a glimpse of the faces of students helped, I hope you will get a picture of what the Foundation does for the College. Never in the twenty-eight year history of the Foundation has the need to help students been greater.

With the General Assembly raising tuition year after year, and unemployment numbers remaining at near record levels, students are finding their dollars being squeezed from both ends. Without the support of so many generous businesses, industries, and individuals, it would have been impossible for the Foundation to have helped so many students. We can’t say thank you enough to those willing to support the Foundation’s mission. There are literally hundreds of students who would have been unable to go to Alamance Community College without the financial support provided by the Foundation.

As you turn the pages of this calendar, realize, each month, that a new chapter in the lives of students is being written – hopefully with a happy ending. If you ever have any doubts about the value of your donations, fear not. More than 1,000 students last year received financial assistance from the Foundation because of donors like yourself. Thank you for caring.

Aaron P. Noble, Jr., Ed.D. Human Resources Director, City of Burlington Board President, ACC Foundation

H onda Power Equipment was named ACC’s 2010 Business Partner of the Year by the ACC Foundation during

the annual Public Officials and Business and Industry Leaders Breakfast in December 2010.

The award recognizes local businesses that provide outstanding support to ACC students and graduates.

A financial supporter of ACC since 1990, Honda Power Equipment’s cash gifts to the ACC Foundation total nearly $50,000. It gives annually to the ACC Foundation’s unrestricted fund, providing help to the neediest students.

Honda Power Equipment’s contributions to the College include:

• Honda was a major collaborative partner in a Duke Energy grant for Industrial Systems Technology totaling $249,000. Previously, the company served as grant partner on two successful Machining Technology grants: one from Duke Energy for $235,512 and one from The Piedmont Triad Partnership WIRED funds for $100,379.

• Due to its rigorous training program, currently 50 percent of Honda Power Equipment employees have taken classes from ACC. In recent years, all new Honda associates received training in leadership and plant fundamentals through ACC’s Business and Industry Services division. ACC has conducted screening of 1,200 applicants for 158 jobs at the company.

• One Honda employee completed his NC State / Community College System Six Sigma Blackbelt certification through ACC, a program that teaches leadership, process improvement and problem-solving skills. The training will result in significant savings for the company.

• Honda Power Equipment is a proactive supporter of the College’s technical programs, encouraging associates to act as advisors and/or consultants to programs such as Industrial Systems Technology, Machining Technology, and Welding.

• Honda Power Equipment recruits ACC students to apply for jobs at the company. Associates visit the campus to encourage key technical programs to increase the number of students enrolling and graduating for purposes of recruitment.

Prior winners of the Business Partner of the Year Award are LabCorp and ARMC (tie), 2006; Duke Energy, 2007; Kernodle Clinic, 2008; and Chandler Concrete Company, Inc., 2009.

A.H. Patterson Jr. Augments His Legacy at Alamance Community College

Mr. Patterson was a wonderfully generous supporter of ACC students. He never sought the limelight, but stayed in the background, just glad he was able to help.

T wo existing scholarships at ACC have been enhanced by the estate of the man who established the scholarships. Real estate

developer A.H. Patterson, Jr., who passed away in August 2010, previously established a scholarship at ACC in memory of his wife, Evelyn G. Patterson, and a scholarship in memory of his parents, A.H. Patterson Sr. and Mattie L. Sharpe Patterson. Prior to his death, Patterson made arrangements to leave an IRA to the ACC Foundation in his estate plans. Valued in excess of $200,000, this IRA added significantly to both the A.H. Patterson Jr. and Evelyn Patterson Scholarship and to the A.H. Patterson Sr. and Mattie L. Sharpe Patterson Scholarship. Each is now valued in excess of $125,000 and each will provide support for up to six students each year to attend ACC.

Says Carolyn Rhode, Executive Director of the ACC Foundation: “Mr. Patterson was a wonderfully generous supporter of ACC students. He never sought the limelight, but stayed in the background, just glad he was able to help. Family members let me know that they read him a thank you note from a student in the last day before his death and he smiled when he heard the words of gratitude the young woman had written.”

◊ Free pass to a four-course culinary student meal in June

◊ Holiday gift in December

◊ Special ribbon at ACCF events

T he largest endowed gift in the 28-year history of the Alamance Community College Foundation has been made.

Valued at nearly $1 million, as of June 30, 2011, the J.C. and Fran S. Dillingham Memorial Scholarships is the result of a bequest from two long-time community volunteers who both passed away in 2006. Starting fall 2011, the scholarship will financially assist up to 30 students each year.

The endowment will provide assistance to students who graduated from Alamance- Burlington public high schools. Preference will be given to students age 25 or older who are returning to school after a period in the workforce. Eligible students must have at least a 2.5 GPA and demonstrate financial need.

J.C. and Fran S. Dillingham Bequest is Largest in ACC Foundation History.

ABOuT THE DILLINGHAMS

An Alabama native, J.C. Dillingham was a lifelong employee of Western Electric and its subsequent company, AT&T. Fran Dillingham was one of seven children and grew up in downtown Burlington. She was a graduate of Burlington High School and was the insurance representative at the Pioneer Plant of Burlington Industries. She retired after more than 40 years of service. Dillingham was an active member of the Communications Workers of America and served as that union’s president.

According to Fran’s sister Ruth Jackson, throughout their lives, both J.C. and Fran took an interest in young people. They were both eager to hear of the accomplishments of friends’ and family members’ children and share those accomplishments with others. “J.C. and Fran were always ‘doing for others,’” notes Ruth, quietly providing funds for a child to go to college or help a family facing hard times due to a layoff.

In the 1960s, J. C. Dillingham took two French classes through the Adult High School program at Technical Institute of Alamance (ACC’s predecessor). In the 1980s and 90s, he took Continuing Education courses, including investment courses, at ACC. He was also a graduate of Elon University.

Since then Linda has won a seat on the Haw River Town Council, was elected Mayor of Haw River, and today serves as the first female Chair of the Alamance County Board of Commissioners. Massey was presented with the College’s Presidential Medallion.

2011 INSPIRATION AWARD RECIPIENT

Patricia “Patsy” B. Tingen, who passed away in September 2010, was named the 2011 Inspiration Award recipient. Patsy earned an associate degree in Business Administration from Technical Institute of Alamance (ACC’s predecessor) in 1968. Her love for ACC kept her on campus as a business instructor for 34 years. While working at the College, she earned a B.A. in Business

Administration from Appalachian State University, and later a M.S. in Business Education from UNCG. Patsy’s love for the College led her to purchase a life insurance policy with the ACC Foundation as the beneficiary. The proceeds were used to establish an endowed scholarship in her name.

GIFTS OF CASH◊ Cash gifts are immediate and, if

you itemize your taxes, your outright gifts of cash are fully deductible for federal income tax purposes.

BEQuESTS◊ After providing for loved ones,

name ACCF a beneficiary in your will to ensure a permanent legacy of helping ACC students. (Check with your estate planner.)

◊ Tell your loved ones you would like ACCF to be listed to receive memorial gifts in your obituary.

CHARITABLE GIFT ANNuITY◊ Transfer at least $10,000 to ACCF

now and receive a guaranteed above market rate of return for the remainder of your life. Perfect for those who live off their assets and who are worried about market volatility.

◊ Immediate tax benefits may be realized.

◊ Remaining asset value transfers to ACCF use upon passing of the donor.

vEHICLES AND EQuIPMENT◊ Certain programs at ACC may

benefit from donations of non-cash items that help educate students in current techniques and technologies.

◊ Such donations may be tax-deductible.

GIFTS OF LIFE INSuRANCE◊ A life insurance policy that is no

longer needed can be a perfect vehicle for a gift. Name ACCF owner and beneficiary of the policy. The current cash value and future premiums paid may be tax deductible. (Check with your life insurance agent for details.)

GIFTS OF STOCk◊ Giving long-term appreciated stock

may offer you a two-fold tax savings:

1. You avoid paying capital tax on the increase of the value of the stock.

2. You receive a tax deduction for the full fair market value of the stock at the time of donation.

GIFTS OF REAL ESTATE◊ Gifts of real estate allow the donor to

avoid capital gains tax and realize a charitable deduction on the full fair market value of the real estate.

Growth in Cost Per Credit

In the past five years, the NC General Assembly has raised tuition at NC community colleges by 75%. In the past ten years, it has gone up 140%. This put additional burdens on local students seeking re-training after a layoff

or seeking the opportunity to be the first in their family to go to college. The ACC Foundation is here to help these students, but as a result, requires more support from the community.

This program expands ACC’s current Career College Program through the addition of a part-time coordinator, the expansion of curriculum areas, and a partnership with Elon University so that students with mild intellectual disabilities may move from a community college experience into a uni-versity environment with the aid of mentors from Elon’s Service Learning Program. The goals for the student include post-secondary experience, vocational training, socialization and, ultimately, employment.

The NC Department of Forestry awarded the follow grant to ACC:

$12,300 for an Urban Forestry project.

The grant will help fund a campus-wide tree inventory, partly for the purpose of planning for a formal arboretum in the near future. Based on the inventory, the College plans to order native trees and shrubs to plant in the arboretum. Two horticulture faculty members and the Grounds Maintenance Supervisors will be certified as arborists.

$29,569 for Secondary and Post-Secondary Technical Preparation for high school students (ACC Tech Prep Program)

This grant will provide opportunities for high school students, parents, and counselors to engage in various learning experiences at ACC focused on emerging careers that incorporate innovative technologies. Such careers involve advanced manufacturing and health sciences. The grant demonstrates a comprehensive partnership between ACC, Alamance-Burlington School System, the Piedmont Triad Consortium, and Alamance County by strengthening pathways from high school to college and to the local workforce.

The North Carolina Clean Water Management Trust Fund awarded the following grant to ACC:

$382,790 for a Stormwater Project in partnership with the Piedmont Conservation Council Partnership

This project, in partnership with the Piedmont Conservation Council, will improve the infrastructure for treating stormwater runoff on the campus of Alamance Community College. The new system will, in turn, result in the improvement of water quality of the Haw River and Lake Jordan. It also will provide educational opportunities and a forum for demonstrating the effectiveness of a distributed storm water BMP (bioretention management program) approach on a typical community college campus.

The National Science Foundation awarded the following grant to ACC:

$25,618 for a Stem Cell Pipeline Grant

Under the sponsorship of the City College of San Francisco, ACC is one of two field test partners in this three year project to develop and test a cell culture/stem cell research curriculum for high school students to be taught in a community college setting.

ESL Distance Learning Grant $10,000

Part of a national project, the program furnishes field-tested civic and English program DVDs and on-line lessons to ESL students so that they may study at home and/or supplement their classroom instruction.

The North Carolina Community College System awarded the following grants to ACC:

$79,220 for an ESL Civics Statewide Curriculum Project

This is a grant to produce online/distance learning classes designed for ESL (English as a Second Language) students. Statewide training is also done to teach teachers how to utilize this free tool.

to be over. It’s time for all able adults in Alamance County to be employed.

In the meantime, ACC is here for those adult learners who need it. And the

ACC Foundation is here to ensure that those who need financial assistance

to attend are not turned away due to financial need.

I thank you for being part of the Alamance Community College

family and among its supporters.
