2010 Overview

January 2011 Rose Fuller Founder · Executive Director

Dear Friends: While our community in 2010 continued to suffer with record and sustained high unemployment rates, rising incidents of intimate partner abuse, shortened school days, and larger classrooms, Northwest Family Services (NWFS) was able to respond by serving 27,000 people with evidence-based services. For every dollar invested in NWFS, $0.95 cents went back to the community for programs.

In these pages, we highlight many whose actions inspired others this past year, from volunteers, to board members, staff, alumni, and current NWFS members.

"Individual commitment to a group effort -- that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work." - Vince Lombardi Vince Lombardi’s quote is abundantly true as I look back on the many successes that have befallen us. NWFS has been fortunate to have leadership and individual commitment surrounding all of our programs and the people the non-profit has served. In 2010, we expanded our services:

• FREE or low-cost Health Insurance for Kids - Began assisting eligible children. • Launched CareerFit – program enhances job readiness and placement skills. • Started Financial Literacy – program helps people use their money wisely. • Began Parenting Inside Out – program for people in the child welfare system.

As we look toward the future, we feel great pride at the differences the organization has made in the community. We are grateful to our many donors and volunteers who made it possible for us to serve. We look forward to a productive 2011, and I hope you will take a moment to browse our report to learn more. With Much Appreciation,

Rose Fuller

Youth Solutions – Schools Department

Youth Solutions –Positive youth development is the primary method for this prevention intervention which provides students with a foundation for making healthy, positive choices.

Youth Solutions equipped almost 18,000 students in over 25 school districts with skills, support, and motivation to navigate to a successful adulthood in 2010. The Youth Solutions project incorporated effective components of an evidence-based positive youth development. The program emphasized healthy relationships including waiting as the best way for middle school students to avoid unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases including HIV/AIDS. Drug, alcohol, and gang prevention are incorporated into positive presentations by professional staff. This best practice project was funded through a federal grant. Programs and materials were available to schools and community groups at no charge. The independent evaluation component of the project investigated the impact at different levels of intervention supporting the effectiveness of this intervention in the school setting. These programs were available in the Spanish language as well. Core Programs

Socio-Dramas: Professional productions in English and Spanish related real life issues in an engaging way, productions geared for middle school or community based groups.

Classroom presentations: Professional staff provided engaging discussions for middle and high school students on a variety of relevant topics from healthy and safe relationships to avoiding gangs and violence. Programs were offered during school, after school, and in community based settings.

Peer to Peer leadership: Students who understand the pressures of being a teen in today’s world are very influential with their fellow students. Youth Solutions partners with local high school leaders to bring programs to middle schools. The high school youth modeled, taught, and reinforced life skills to those who were about to face high school.

Parent Education: Every parent wants the best for his or her children. Youth Solutions parent support included Love and Logic training as well as assisting parents by addressing the pressing issues their children face.

Funding for this project came from the Administration for Children and Families, the Office of Population Affairs, and the Clackamas County Commission for Children and Families.

Youth Solutions – Impact Testimonies

Promises Drama Troupe – teens perform a drama about the dangers of drugs, alcohol, and sex.

Before Northwest Family Services came into my life, I was playing a lot of risky cards—and that was in all areas of my life. I knew I needed to make a change in my life before my luck ran out.

I came across the PROMISES Drama Troupe at the right time. The message, statistics, and the fact that it was teens who were sharing the information really made a big impact on me. I auditioned and actually got in! I am currently in my second year with the troupe, and I have learned a lot about acting and have improved my speech skills. I also have had the opportunity to meet other teens from all over the Portland area.

Because of Northwest Family Services and working with the PROMISES Drama Troupe, I’ve been able to turn my whole life around and I even got my grades way up!

Jess Ross, Promises Troup Member (’09, ’10, ’11)

NWFS provided youth educators and career counselors to local High Schools “We wanted to give a thank you to our partnership with Northwest Family Services this year. They provided us with four youth educators and five Career coaches.”

“Thank you so much, we couldn’t have done this without you. You guys helped us make this program successful this summer, and we really appreciated your help. Thank You!” Gresham High School – 2010

SUN Coordinator Linda Kue

Latino Enagagement

Nearly 6,000 youth receive support through our Latino Engagement programs. For example, the Latino Family Empowerment Project (LFEP) is a full service bilingual, bicultural after-school program. LFEP conducts bi-weekly afterschool programs, summer program, field trips, and tutoring for 140 students at 7 Portland middle schools. Almost 800 family members gained access to resources in financial literacy, job training, navigating the school system, housing, and parenting. Schools, organizations, and businesses support the success of the project. LFEP is open to all students while being culturally specific for Latino students. This project is funded in part through a generous grant from the Portland Children’s Levy.

Northwest Family Service’s, annual cultural festival event, “Gritalo soy Latino,” featured games, dancing,

soccer tournaments, and lots of food to over 700 youth at Reynolds Middle School in 2010. 2010 Programs have included:

• After-school, culturally relevant programs directed by NWFS bilingual, bicultural staff, with activities in areas such as tutoring, cultural awareness, sports, arts & civic engagement.

• Socio-drama, Encuentros, enacted by the NWFS’ high school drama troupe presents issues such as avoiding gangs, drugs and alcohol, and maintaining healthy relationships.

• Girls’ and Boys’ Groups for at-risk students, designed to build character through interactive and engaging instruction with NWFS staff.

• Parent classes in Spanish providing the kind of support and information parents need. • Gritalo…soy Latino is a community engagement program which includes soccer and family

activities. Over 85% of the Latino youth we serve come from families below poverty level. We work cooperatively with many agencies and entities, offering services that complement their services.

_____________________________________________________________________________________ Job Development and Placement In an effort to better serve families in need, Northwest Family Services (NWFS) started a Job Development and Placement Department in 2010. Our contract with Oregon Vocational Rehabilitation Services allows NWFS to place people with disabilities in a job that fits their skills and needs. Clients: Northwest Family Services created and maintains employer partnerships and has relationships with over 100 organizations. NWFS used its extensive network of employers to meet the employment goals of clients in 2010. NWFS Job Developers used the process and steps outlined in EOPII training to accomplish job development, job placement, successful job retention and post-employment services. NWFS offered job development services at very reasonable rates. Additional Services includes: skill assessment, job readiness workshops (CareerFit), Job Club, On the Job Training, and Post Employment Services. Expertise includes: Various populations including those with disabilities, Spanish bilingual and bi-cultural, securing partnerships, identifying and meeting needs of partners, and Outreach to Latino community. We expanded our outreach to the Russian speaking community in 2011.

Career Fit—Open to Anyone: NWFS offers four, 2 hour workshops. These pro-active opportunities providing job-seekers workshops on the following topics: • Professional Skills Assessment • Effective Job Search • Writing a Cover Letter • Developing a Resume: Sell Your Abilities • Interview Skills

• Job Development • Professional Communication • Financial Literacy • Skills to Keep a Job

Employers: Return on Investment: We have been turning hiring needs into business opportunities in 2010. In many cases, NWFS worked with the Oregon State Vocational Rehabilitation Center to place people with disabilities. Employing people with disabilities is a business opportunity. It translated into lower costs, higher revenues, and increased profits for employers. Employers increased their opportunity to gain a lasting customer base. *People with disabilities represent a trillion dollar market segment and attract new customers and their families, friends, and associates to businesses. Ninety-two per cent of all consumers are more favorable toward companies that employ people with disabilities. * UMass Boston’s Center for Social Development, 2006.

_____________________________________________________________________________________ Lasting Relationships

Northwest Family Services (NWFS) is committed to promoting healthy relationships. NWFS presented to almost 3,100 individuals and couples in 2010. We offered many educational programs and trainings designed to equip individuals and couples with the skills they need to sustain fulfilling relationships. This project is funded in part through a grant from the Administration for Children and Families. The skills-based trainings ranged from short presentations to four-week series on topics relevant to relationships. Professional staff provided helpful, interactive, and important skill-based classes in local communities in the following topic areas: • Communication skills & conflict resolution • Healthy relationships • Marriage education • Effective parenting

• Job readiness workshops • Basic financial literacy • Safe relationships • Fatherhood

Presentations were offered on other topics, as requested such as safe relationships and coping with divorce. Courses are offered by skilled professionals, licensed clinical staff and specially trained mentor couples. Programs utilized evidence-based, proven methods. All courses are available in both English and Spanish.

“Even after only one session of Lasting Relationships it gave me hope. In life you know that everyone has problems and issues, but it helps to know that you are not alone. The skills you learn can be used in any type of relationship. Since my husband and I started attending this workshop we have seen our relationship strengthened. My only regret is that I wish I had known about these classes when we were first married.”— Lisa

Parenting Inside Out - serves adults within the child welfare and criminal justice system.

PIO aims to keep children with their families and provide parents with the skills to prevent child abuse and mistreatment. In PIO justice –involved parents learn a variety of positive parenting techniques they can use the rest of their lives. By applying best practice and research-based criteria for early intervention, PIO provides a model for healthy parenting. Through interactive coaching, role play, journaling and discussion, parents will expand their understanding of child development.

“I had no confidence in myself. In PIO I accomplished something each week. Those little successes gave me the confidence to keep going; I was willing to try something bigger. Now I

am part of my children’s lives. I am their mom.”

FREE 12 week parenting program funded through a grant from the Clackamas County Commission on Children & Families. Childcare is provided for all attendees, and this course satisfies court-mandated

Professional Counseling

Northwest Family Services employed four professional counselors in 2010, all with a variety of education and licenses, ready to serve the needs of the community with their skills and training. NWFS served over 150 clients within our Counseling Department in 2010. Services Services include individual, couple and family counseling for issues such as:

• Depression • Anxiety • Grief • Parenting

• Trauma • Eating Disorders • Post-Traumatic Stress • Pregnancy loss

NWFS received a grant from Providence Health & Services which allows us to expand services to low income clients and returning veterans. Educational seminars and classes are also available on these and other topics. Process An effective counseling process provides education, support and a safe place to explore concerns. It can help clients deal with conflict and stress by clarifying issues, exploring feelings, and examining relationships. Authentic counseling encourages people to become accountable for their choices and behaviors, and to be responsible to others in their lives. The insights gained in therapy should help people achieve more peaceful and fulfilling lives by honestly facing their own situations and committing to the work of change that may be required. Counselors All our therapists are skilled in the treatment of depression, anxiety, grief and relationship issues as well as other clinical specialties.

Strategic Plan: Goals of 2010

1. Due to the continual challenges with record and sustained high unemployment rates, growing underage drug and alcohol use, rising incidents of intimate partner abuse, shortened school days, and larger classrooms during 2009, Northwest Family Services (NWFS) set a goal in 2010 to establish new programs to meet those needs. New Program and department goals included the following:

a. New Jobs Department b. New Healthy Kids Department c. Counseling Department Expanded d. Fatherhood Program

2. The local community has had a growing challenge of working to overcome children under 18

using marijuana and alcohol. NWFS set a goal to address this expanding issue.

3. We strived to increase our long-term Development Department through adding a Sustainer’s Circle opportunity as a way to give. Sustainers make a 3 year pledge at a specific dollar amount that the non-profit may always count on.

4. NWFS strove to diversify funding in 2010. One large grant that was funding various NWFS programs was potentially going to end in 2010.

5. NWFS set an objective to create a storybook or collection of testimonies on NWFS programs.
