Sunshine Cathedral’s Values & Purpose

Sunshine Cathedral embraces the core values once articulated by Metropolitan Community Churches

InclusionLove is our greatest moral value and resisting exclusion is a primary focus of our ministry. We want to continue to be the conduits of a faith where everyone is included in the family of God, and where all parts of our being are welcomed at God’s table.CommunityOff ering a safe and open community for people to worship, learn and grow in their faith is our deep desire. We are committed to equipping ourselves and each other to do the work that God has called us to do in the world.Spiritual TransformationProviding a message of liberation from the oppressive religious environment of our day or to those experiencing God for the fi rst time is what guides our ministry. We believe that when people are invited to experience God through the life and ministry of Christ, lives will be transformed.Social ActionWorking to talk less and do more, we are committed to resisting the structures that oppress people and standing with to those who suff er under the weight of oppressive systems, being guided always by our commitment to Global Human Rights.

Sunshine Cathedral strongly promotes MCC founder Troy Perry’s original Th ree-Pronged Gospel:~ Christian Salvation (saved from hopelessness, degradation, & despair)~ Christian Community (modeled aft er the healing love demonstrated by Jesus, inclusive of those who identify as Christian and those who don’t)~ Christian Social Action (justice work to build the kin-dom of God on earth)

And Sunshine Cathedral shares the values articulated in the Mission and Vision of the International Council of Community Churches:Mission: “As people devoted to following Christ we are committed to community, to treasuring diversity, to living our faith in service and love.”Vision: “To affi rm individual freedom of conscience, protect and promote congregational self-determination, proclaim that the love of God – which united – can overcome any division, be an integral partner in the worldwide ecumenical movement.”

Sunshine Cathedral’s Affi rmation:Sunshine Cathedral is a diff erent kind of church where the past is past and the future has infi nite possibilities.

Sunshine Cathedral is a member of the International Council of Community Churches (which is an institutional member of the National and World Councils of Churches), Metropolitan Community Churches, and the Divine Science Federation International. Fort Lauderdale, FL 5 2017 Annual Report

The Purpose of the Annual Meeting Th e annual meeting is a chance for us to receive a summary of the previous year’s progress and/or challenges and a reminder of what the vision for the upcoming year entails. In years when there are matters to be voted on, a forum will be held before the day of the meeting so that people can ask questions and speak to issues. On the day of the vote, there is no further discussion. On years when there is no vote, the meeting is simply to share reports with those who are interested. A compilation of reports will always be available in print for those who want them who were unable to attend the meeting.

How is Information Available During the Year 1. All Cathedral board meetings are open and can be attended by every member. One must be on the agenda tospeak, but the business that is handled by the board is open for everyone to witness. Th e board meets 10 times peryear (second Tuesday of most months at 7 pm). 2. Th e Financial Health Team meets the fourth Tuesday of most months at 7 pm. At that meeting, the entireministry plan is discussed line by line. All questions are welcome and are answered. Th e FHT is made up of staffand about half the Cathedral Board, but any Cathedral member may attend the meeting and at that meeting mayask any question about church finances. 3. All staff members are available to the congregation by phone or email. You can always ask a question. If theperson you ask isn’t the best person to ask, she or he will refer you to the proper authority. 4. Th e Sun Burst is published weekly. Th at publication contains multiple pages of information every weekthroughout the year. Highlights from the Sun Burst are also sent out most weeks by email. Archived copies of theSun Burst can be found on the church website.5. Weekly and monthly financial reports are emailed by the Minister of Administration to the Cathedral Board andposted on the Cathedral’s web site www.sunshinecathedral.org . 6. Announcements are made at the beginning of every worship service, and slides with information are rotatedbefore each service. 7. Additional information can be found on our website and on the church’s Facebook page. 8. In addition to these many ways of staying informed, there is an Annual Meeting every January whereinformation is summarized and shared.

Conduct for Public MeetingsOur rules for discussion for all Sunshine Cathedral meetings, classes, and forums  are based on the V.I.S.I.O.N.S. model. (V.I.S.I.O.N.S. is a multi-cultural, diversity training and consultation firm committed to anti-oppression work):

1. It’s OK to disagree. 2. Do not blame, shame, or attack anyone 3. Practice both/and thinking (as valid as your opinion may be, it probably isn’t the only valid opinion and there isprobably more than one way to accomplish any worthy goal) 4. Be aware of intent and impact (our intentions are usually good, or at very least neutral, but our words andactions may impact others more negatively than we had intended) 5. “Try on” new ideas before dismissing them or reacting negatively to them 6. Practice self-focus (rather than belittling or insulting someone with a different view, we can simply own our ownfeelings by saying, “I feel” or “I think” or “I would prefer” rather than “you’re wrong” or “what were you thinking?!”or “that’s stupid.” Also, we speak only for ourselves; we are never the spokespersons for unnamed, faceless “others”(the infamous “they” or “everybody” that are oft en invoked to persuade an ideological opponent)

By using these simple guidelines for discussion, there is no topic that we can’t discuss and even when we disagree, we can do so in ways that are helpful, respectful, and that will build us up rather than tear us apart. By committing to respectful dialogue, even our disagreements can be part of a healthy process that will contribute to the vitality of our congregation.

2017 Annual Report 6 Sunshine Cathedral

Direct Dealing We have a direct dealing policy at Sunshine Cathedral. Public meetings are not the place to initially air grievances. When we have conflict or a misunderstanding with someone in church leadership, the FIRST step is to speak with that person directly. If that proves to be unsatisfactory, then the SECOND step is to speak with that person and a mediator. If that doesn’t work, then speaking to someone’s supervisor might be in order.

It is always appropriate to ask questions before making accusations, and one should always deal directly with a person rather than resorting to triangulation tactics (going around a person or behind the person, trying to vilify the person to others or build a coalition against the person before a direct discussion with the person has even taken place).  Triangulation is considered antagonistic behavior and is unworthy of any principled organization, and especially any organization founded on a commitment to spiritual growth and vitality.

If there are questions about fiduciary concerns, the FIRST step is to ask questions of the Administrative Staff . Th at should almost always settle the matter as a member of the Administrative Staff is the person with the most current and complete information about all financial matters. However, if you feel that the Administrative Staff  has not responded to you sufficiently, you should attend a Financial Health Team meeting. At that meeting every line item is addressed and every question that is raised is answered. In the unlikely event that the first two steps didn’t answer your questions satisfactorily, you can then ask to be added to the agenda for a Board of Director’s meeting. Once on the agenda, you can make a statement to the board which will listen to you and will decide if further action is warranted.

Fort Lauderdale, FL 7 2017 Annual Report

2018 Senior Minister’s Report for the Annual Congregational MeetingBy Rev. Dr. Durrell Watkins, Senior Minister

Pastoral Vision On November 3rd, 2007, Sunshine Cathedral installed a new Senior Minister (me). The next day in a sermon I outlined a 10 year vision:

1. To promote progressive, positive, practical spirituality within the Sunshine Cathedral community and beyond.

2. To continue building a culture of gratitude and generosity, where every active member gives generously of time, talent, and treasure to the work of Sunshine Cathedral.

3. To have 1200 weekly worshipers.

4. To continue reaching out to South Florida, the Caribbean, and beyond.

5. To improve the quality and accessibility of Religious Education.

Ten Years Later - How’d we do?Sharing our spiritual experience

1. Sunshine Cathedral is widely known as a progressive faith community. Using Facebook, Twitter, Constant Contact, You Tube, Second Life, our website, our in-house newsletter (Sun Burst), our periodical magazine (Spirit & Truth), print advertising, palm cards, and our eco-bin sign on Wilton Drive, we are constantly sharing our message of all-inclusive divine Love and the sacred value of all people with the world.

Culture of generosity 2. Money problems we will always have with us, but we have built a culture of generosity and we will continue

to do so. A decade ago this church was some $300,000 in the red. All restricted accounts were wiped out, payments to the clergy pension plan hadn’t been made in a year, the church was a full quarter behind on payroll taxes and a payroll bounced. But we tackled those problems. We trimmed the budget, we became creative and indefatigable with fundraisers, and we started teaching the biblical principle of tithing (percentage giving). We asked everyone to do what they could to help their church be fi nancially stable and healthy. And sure enough, year after year, the amount we were in the red decreased, and then we started ending years in the black. For the fi rst time in 5 years, we have ended a year with a slight defi cit (only $36k and most of that we owe to our own Foundation who gave us a line of credit to help with diffi cult times…we are working a plan to retire that modest amount quickly).

Also, in 2016 we dedicated our new columbarium/memorial chapel, retired our property’s mortgage, and installed two new stained glass windows on the property. In 2017 we installed new fl ooring and seating (giving us 100 extra seats in the worship center). And, along the way, we have raised money for Breast Cancer awareness and treatment, AIDS services, other churches in need, hurricane relief, and we have generously shared resources with the Global Justice Institute (which aids and empowers LGBTQ people all over the world) and the Religious Institute (which off ers sexuality education in the context of faith).

Meanwhile, we have faithfully collected literally tons of food for local food banks and are in our second year of providing brown bag lunches to food insecure individuals. By all indications, we have created a culture of generosity and that generosity is making a diff erence in lives all over the world.

Numerical growth 3. We had no idea in 2007 that the decade ahead would show dramatic decrease in worship attendance

nationwide, that church closures would happen more frequently, that entire denominations would decline, and that the non-religious would become the fastest growing “religious” group. But even as church trends changed over the last decade and church growth became more challenging than ever, we actually lived into our goal in some pretty exciting ways.

Our Sunday morning attendance is nowhere near a thousand (it runs between 400 and 550 depending on the time of the year with it nearing or breaking 1000 for Christmas Eve and Easter Sunday). However, we have more than Sunday morning on campus worship services. We also have Second Life services,

Page 8: Annual Report 2018 - Sunshine Cathedral MCCsunshinecathedral.org/AdminFinancial/Monthly Financials/2017 Annu… · Cory Hagopian Dario DaSilva Donald Gillin Errol Nothstein Hal Ritchie

2017 Annual Report 8 Sunshine Cathedral

services at Assisted Living Facilities, special services throughout the year (Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, Thanksgiving, etc.). When we add all our worship services, we have up to 900 people per week in worship! That’s 75% of our goal, but probably better than we would have done if had not set a goal.

But wait, there’s more! We also have classes, groups, and a lot of “online” activity (including people watching our services online). When we add all attendance metrics together (including “virtual” activity), we usually have over 10,000 people worshiping/praying/studying with us in some fashion, and some weeks, that number exceeds 13,000! That means that by various means, we have not 1,200 but nearly and sometimes more than 12,000 (12k) per week praying with us. That deserves a hallelujah!

Outreach4. Our outreach eff orts have remained constant and we continue trying to improve them.

Religious education 5. The religious education arm of Sunshine Cathedral is The Samaritan Institute (formerly known as Light

University). TSI trains prayer chaplains, deacons, New Thought community ministers, off ers continuing education for deacons and ministers, and off ers personal enrichment courses open to all. TSI is approved by the state of Florida to off er religious degrees. TSI is recognized by Divine Science Federation International as a ministerial training program. And TSI has students not only locally but also at a distance in places such as Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Utah, Idaho, the west coast of Florida, and the nation of India. We have indeed improved the quality and access of religious education at the Sunshine Cathedral.

An Arts ChurchI did not put this in the “offi cial” vision ten years ago, but I told people when I got here in 2006 (I was the liturgist for a little over a year before I became the senior minister) that I wanted Sunshine Cathedral to be an “arts” church (featuring various performing arts – fi lm, comedy, cabaret, instrumental and choral music, drama, poetry, dance, even “drag” performance, etc.) as a way of building community and lifting spirits and demonstrating that life is meant to be joyous. We are defi nitely an Arts Church today.

MCC (Marble Collegiate Church) as a ModelIn my early days at Sunshine Cathedral I also said to some of my closest confi dants that Sunshine Cathedral would become the Marble Collegiate of the South. The Marble Collegiate Church of NYC is an urban church featuring many groups, classes, arts performances, and, of course, worship and religious education. Furthermore, Marble Collegiate Church was the RCA (Reformed Church in America) parish pastored for decades by Norman Vincent Peale (and following him, another positive thinker, Arthur Caliandro). Peale was a pioneer in bringing psychological counseling to church ministry (the Blanton-Peale Center still trains therapists) and using various media (television, radio, print) to share his positive message. He also used his pulpit to share his message of Positive Thinking which was infl uenced by such New Thought luminaries as Charles and Myrtle Fillmore (Unity), Ernest Holmes (Science of Mind/Religious Science), and Emmet Fox (Divine Science). Therapeutic (healing), positive spirituality mixed with social science and the arts…that was Peale’s game plan and I wanted to do something similar in Fort Lauderdale. Sunshine Cathedral already had a 2 decade head start with featuring progressive theology and New Thought philosophy and I very much wanted to lead Sunshine Cathedral to the next level. We are still traveling toward this goal of being a healing, positive thinking community, a goal that so far is more than 30 years in the making.

Now What?As I begin my second decade as your senior minister, I off er a new vision for our forward movement (or perhaps this is merely the second chapter of the original vision). Because of how fast the world changes, I will not presume to cast a vision for ten years, but merely for 5. Don’t worry, there will be more 5 year goals after that.

My ten year vision was based on need…need to stabilize after a time of transition, need to establish a clear direction under new leadership, need to put fi rm foundations under the lofty dreams that had already be expressed, need to stabilize the fi nances that were stretched because of bold movement to create something grand and wonderful for our community. My predecessor was a visionary, a risk taker, a charmer, a person of great faith, and what he achieved in two decades was miraculous. He handpicked me to keep the dream alive and to build on it. And so that initial list of goals for the decade was meant to stabilize, encourage, inspire, and lead us forward.

Page 9: Annual Report 2018 - Sunshine Cathedral MCCsunshinecathedral.org/AdminFinancial/Monthly Financials/2017 Annu… · Cory Hagopian Dario DaSilva Donald Gillin Errol Nothstein Hal Ritchie

Fort Lauderdale, FL 9 2017 Annual Report

Today, looking ahead, we are in a diff erent day. We are pretty stable and our previous goals have been in large measure met. So now, we need new goals, fresh dreams, and renewed commitment to move boldly beyond anything we’ve done or imagined so far.

Therefore, I off er now this 5 year pastoral vision for Sunshine Cathedral:1. To encourage all church members and friends to discover the grace of giving and the spiritual value of

stewardship so that we give not begrudgingly nor out of a sense of duty, but rather gladly, joyously, and as a means of worship. For the next fi ve years lets us experience our giving as a Sacrament of Sharing.

2. To reach more people than ever before. The world is changing so rapidly, I will not limit outreach to the means of the past nor will I try to determine what all the ways of the future will be; but let us be observant, adaptable, and committed so that we can touch more lives with good news, with hope and healing in as many ways as possible. If we are reaching 12k people weekly today, let that number be exponentially larger 5 years from now.

3. To promote spiritual health and growth, encourage daily spiritual practices, and continue growing as a spiritual community that loves to play and pray and work and dream together.

4. To continue modeling progressive, positive, practical spirituality while acknowledging that such spirituality ought to also be a justice-seeking spirituality. The gospel witness is always mindful of the sick, the hurting, the marginalized, the struggling, and the dispossessed. Our positive thinking must lead to positive action that benefi ts us and the whole world.

5. To always know whatever we can dream, we can achieve; so, no matter how large the goal, the response should be “let us fi gure out how to make it happen” rather than allowing fear or doubt to persuade us that it can’t be done. Faith leads to faithfulness, and faithfulness can work miracles.

In Brief:From the Beginning of 2018 until the end of 2022, it is my intention that Sunshine Cathedral will:

1. Embrace the spirituality of giving.2. Reach more people than ever with our positive message.3. Focus on living daily and gathering regularly as people of faith.4. Understand that progressive, positive, practical spirituality is also justice seeking spirituality.5. Dare to dream big and trust that the dreams we dream are really possible.

I look forward to many more years of gospel ministry at, with, and for the Sunshine Cathedral!

Lovingly submitted,

Rev. Dr. Durrell Watkins Senior Minister

Sunshine Cathedral Foundation Annual Report 2017

On behalf of the Board of Governors of the Foundation, we are honored and privileged to serve on the Sunshine Cathedral Foundation. 2017 has once again seen amazing achievements, thanks to the generosity and thoughtfulness of our supporters.

We added three new members to our Board this past year. Membership has been stable and attendance at our meetings has excellent. (Anyone who is interested in serving on our Board is encouraged to approach any Board member .)

Our Columbarium and Memorial Garden, on the Sunshine Cathedral campus, continues to serve the needs of members and others who wish to place the remains of their loved ones in a niche in our columbarium.

Our Stained-Glass Windows and Doors Project has not seen any new purchases but we hope donors will come forward to help us complete this project. We encourage individuals or groups of individuals to work with us to purchase a window or door.

We continue our work with OUR-FUND, which serves as a vehicle to process funds earmarked for the foundation, as well as investing some of our funds with them.

No member of the Board of Governors is paid for the work they do on behalf of the Foundation, other than bookkeeping. An outside accounting fi rm audits our books annually.

I know each of you join with me in supporting the Sunshine Cathedral Foundation, as we work together to secure the future of the Sunshine Cathedral for generations to come.

Sincerely yours,

Keith

2017 Accomplishments

The major activities and accomplishments of the Sunshine Cathedral Foundation are:1. New Chairs – CC IV

Thanks to the generosity and support of many stakeholders, and to the leadership of Sunshine Cathedral, the new chairs have been installed in the sanctuary, with new carpet and a shiny fl oor. Thanks to all who contributed.

2. Facility ManagementThe Foundation has been able to support projects proposed by our ministers during this past year. Some new AC units have been installed, a new roof has been installed on the administration building, and a new roof is scheduled to be installed on the Graham/Fasana Center in the coming months. Improvements to lighting in the parking lot, bicycle racks, smokers, sound equipment and new lights in the cathedral have all been made over the past year.

3. Ambassadors ClubMembers of the Ambassadors Club support the Foundation with unrestricted gifts of at least $500 per person (or $1,000 per couple) each year. These gifts support the Foundation’s administrative costs and outreach eff orts. (An * indicates the person is deceased.)2017 – 2018 Ambassadors Club Members:

It the major method the Foundation has to establish long-term investments and an endowment fund to support the Foundation, our Cathedral, as well as SunServe. Upon request, Pillars Society funds are used to support various needs of the Sunshine Cathedral; some funds are restricted and the donors’ wishes regarding how to use those funds are honored.

5. About the Sunshine Cathedral FoundationThe Sunshine Cathedral Foundation was established to secure a home for the Sunshine Cathedral. MISSION:

To raise and manage capital and endowment funds in support of the charitable work, projects, ministries and outreach programs of the Sunshine Cathedral, and to raise funds to renovate the buildings and grounds to serve the people and community groups that use our campus facilities and call us their home.

ORGANIZATION: The Foundation is a 501 c (3) not-for-profi t organization governed by a Board of Governors which is comprised of dedicated individuals who are Cathedral members and/or LGBT community supporters. The Foundation and the Cathedral work cooperatively to renovate/maintain the campus and its facilities and to receive and administer gifts and bequests. In addition, Sunshine Social Services (SunServe) operates programs on our campus. We share this campus with diverse organizations that represent many facets of our community.
