(AJLI). We are one of the oldest, largest and most effective women’s volunteer organizations in the world. We are all working together to build better communities. It was a great League year (July 2017—June 2018) and we achieved so much together through hard work and dedication. Our Active membership continues to grow with 11 New Members this past year. These women are committed to helping others with 13 community outreach volunteer events held. We were able to work with many organizations and target our focus to help with “the education and well- being of women and children”. Many training opportunities were provided for members to attend local events, Michigan State Council (MSC) trainings in Ann Arbor and Day at the Capitol in Lansing, and AJLI leadership training conferences in Salt Lake City, UT, Long Beach, CA and Memphis, TN. For the first time AJLI held the Annual Conference and Organization Development Institute (ODI) at the same time, in the same city and it allowed ODI attendees interested in Board positions to see what it could be like to be PE/ President. What an exciting opportunity to share this with our future leaders and have them connect with and learn from other amazing Junior League women around the country! We are very grateful for our donors and the growing support for Touch-A-Truck and the Annual Fund. With these fundraising accomplishments of nearly $40,000, we were able to complete our commitment to Hospital Hospitality House and award three grants to our non-profit community totaling over $22,500 to local organizations. With 90 years of service in Kalamazoo and over 200 members in our League, even though we joined at different times, worked on different projects and fundraisers, one thing remains constant, we all believe in our mission: to develop our members into trained leaders and give back to our community. We honored this tradition of service this year by giving all members years of service pins. We have over 130 members who have been in JLK for 25 years or more! When I look back on the past two year serving as President, I am very proud of what our members have accomplished together. I want to give a special thanks to our Board of Directors for their time and dedication, it has been an honor to serve with this group of women, especially those who were with me both years. I will cherish the memories and friendships I have made and the lessons I have learned on this journey. Thank you all for the opportunity to serve in this role. Sincerely, Christy Peterson, President 2016-2018

ANNUAL REPORT 2017-2018 Letter from the President:

The Junior League of Kalamazoo (JLK) is one of 291 Leagues in 4 countries, encompassing more than 145,000 women, as a part of the Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc.

We were able to work with many organizations and target our focus to help with “the education and well-being of women and children”.

Many training opportunities were provided for members to attend local events, Michigan State Council (MSC) trainings in Ann Arbor and Day at the Capitol in Lansing, and AJLI leadership training conferences in Salt Lake City, UT, Long Beach, CA and Memphis, TN. For the first time AJLI held the Annual Conference and Organization Development Institute (ODI) at the same time, in the same city and it allowed ODI attendees interested in Board positions to see what it could be like to be PE/President.

COMMUNITY IMPACT This past year was a great time to be in JLK if you love to volunteer! We started off the year volunteering at Pretty Lake Camp (PLC) carnivals, helping The Salvation Army with their warm coat drive and Christmas toy shop, and making cards for the kids at Bronson Children’s Hospital too. We were able to help many organizations support

women and children by participating in the Cinderella Project to distribute prom dresses to high school girls, organizing an Easter egg hunt for Children and Family Services, making meals for guests of both Hospital Hospitality Houses, and hosting the Fresh Food Fairy at Touch-A-Truck in support of the Kids in the Kitchen. And in May we held a Done-in-a-Meeting at Loaves and Fishes. There we organized and labeled food items for food pantries throughout the community.

This year, JLK members were encouraged to donate items in support of community outreach events and gave books and coats to the Salvation Army, prom dresses to the Cinderella project, school supplies to Communities in Schools, personal care items to YWCA, books to Children and Family Services, and camper items for PLC. The membership also donated gift cards and money together with the JL of Lansing to help support Hurricane Harvey relief for the JL of Houston and the JL of the Woodlands.

Once again this year the JLK continued our legacy of

granting back to our community. We gifted a total of $3,000 in support of the First Day Shoe Fund, Vicksburg ($750), St. Luke’s Diaper Bank (SLDB) ($750), and the Kids Moving and Thriving Triathlon ($1,500). In addition to our philanthropy we plan to support these organizations with volunteer service. Our new members repackaged diapers for community distribution in May and our members helped fit shoes for children in Vicksburg in August.

JLK members headed to Lansing in March with members from the eight others leagues in Michigan for our annual

Michigan State Council of Junior League’s Day at the Capitol to learn more about issues facing foster care, human trafficking, and domestic violence. We also met with legislators to advocate for more robust laws and support on these issues.

Many of our members traveled to cities across the US to receive leadership training to help with the operations of our League and to network with other JL women from around the world. These trainings help to build capacity among our members in the areas of marketing, financial reporting, membership, nominating, governance, community impact,

and leadership development. Learning together, we are women building better communities. From our JL net-working we were able to build relationships to support and work with our sister leagues in Battle Creek and Lansing to help our communities.

FUNDRAISING The 7th Annual Touch-A-Truck was held on May 12th, 2018. This year had 69 vehicles, which is a new record! We hosted nearly 160 volunteers for over 890 donated hours. Despite the unfavorable weather, we had nearly 1500 attendees at the Fairgrounds.

The day started out with a weather delay, but once we were finally cleared to open the gates, the fun began! Many faces lit up as they got up-close and personal with vehicles that help to build, serve and protect our community. Highlights from this year included princesses and superheroes from Once Upon a Princess, LLC and musical fun under the tent with Small Sound. Attendees got to experience hands-on interactions including climbing inside the emergency vehicles provided by several public safety divisions, help-ing to prepare, then EAT delicious and nutritious smoothies with the Fresh Food Fairy, and having their eyes and teeth checked by the Kalamazoo Lions Club Mobile Eyesight Unit and the Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures truck. This community event netted over $18,000 to support our community impact projects and leadership training. A HUGE thank you to our generous sponsors – we are so grateful you were able to be a part of our 7th annual Touch-A-Truck!

Our Annual Fund campaign continues to grow with donations of over $10,000 – more than 100% of our goal! The annual fund was also supported by a fundraiser with Miller Auditorium for Disney’s “The Lion King” to donate a portion of ticket sales to JLK. The JLK Endowment fund also helps support the JLK’s operational costs with donation from the funds interest. We are thankful for all of our member’s contributions and continued support by recognizing the importance of our Mission and giving back financially to both the JLK Annual and Endowment funds.

Thank you to our volunteers, supporters and sponsors! We are hopeful for your continued support and joining us at Touch-A-Truck on Saturday, May 11, 2019. A full list of all contributors is listed on the back.
