Participation in the national scientific outreach meeting

(Activity grant) Oct 8th - 13th, 2017

Monterrey, Nuevo León, México

Four members of the SPIE chapter of the University of Guadalajara traveled to the city of Monterrey in Nuevo León, Mexico, in order to explain what light is, how lenses work and how the wavelength of a ray of light changes when it passes through a material with a certain refractive index. This dissemination work was carried out in the national scientific outreach meeting (Mexico) and focused on spreading fundamental concepts of optics to the public that varied from kindergarten children to high school students.

Coffee Science (Activity grant) November 2017 and Abril 2018

The Coffee Science has place in our university, on open places to make the talk so friendly. This is the event where researchers, teachers and students of different degrees share experience in science, study and personal life. The researchers are interviewed by chapter members, asking elaborated and casual questions about their memories in science, education and life and advices about how to make science.

General numbers

• 2 researchers as invited.

• 40 attendees approximately.

• 80 liters of coffee sponsored by the chapter.

• 5 kilograms of cookies.

Planned activities for the future

(September 2018 - October 2019)

Visiting Lecture/Traveling Lecturer Program Description: Thanks to the SPIE Visiting Lecture Program and the OSA Traveling Lecture Program, the chapter will organize a couple of conferences with researchers from other countries as some other activities as workshops and social meetings with the chapter and the invited researcher.

Chapter meeting Description: To improve the relationship between our chapter members, this winter will be a “Posada”, a party for all the members and people willing to be part of the chapter.

Photodynamic inactivation workshop Description: The board of directors will elect 5 members of the SPIE student chapter with interest in bio-photonics and will be taught a course in which they will grow bacteria and then inactivate them using laser light and a photo-sensitizer.

Interferometry workshop Description: The board will elect 3 outstanding members of the SPIE student chapter and they will be trained how to build a twyman green interferometer. With this interferometer, it is planned to obtain the profile in 3 mirror dimensions, using interferometry by phase shift.

Our Daily Science Description: Our daily Science is a new event of Scientific Diffusion where researchers give conference with more detail about their fields on researching in a simple way to understand.

This conferences will be given in our university and every undergraduate, master and doctorate students and free to attend and ask about every doubt and restlessness they could have about the conference.

Science for kids Description: This annual event is the biggest diffusion event they have in our university, we try every year to give to kids some interesting workshops to encourages to kids from junior high to see the science from a different perspective and they decide later to aspire for a career in science.

Coffee Science MX Description: Informal talk with a guest lecturer, at an open and outdoors place for students, teachers and researchers to share experiences in science, study and personal life. Free coffee and teach to play Khet to gather new students. This is an event that we plan to organize on a monthly basis. Besides it is a national project in Mexico.
