Leadership Team

A Message from Alan Curryer

It is always insightful to reflect on our accomplishments and the many areas in which we have made great progress. It fills me with gratitude when I consider all

the people who have made so much of this happen.

I want to first thank our Board of Trustees for their commitment and service to Rockwood Retirement Communities. Their support for our organization and their accountability to driving our mission are vital to our progress and success. Thank you to the Leadership Team for the countless ways they lead by example, and for their service to our residents and team members. And to our more than 300 team members who serve our more than 650 residents with high standards of professionalism and caring respect each and every day, I thank you all for the ways that you make a difference in our residents’ lives and how you support the mission and vision of our organization.

We have worked on many internal projects this year. We continue to make great strides in our Employer of Choice initiatives by improving our hiring and orientation processes. We made a lot of improvements in the area of technology which you can read about on page 5, and our Nursing Assistant Certified training program on page 6 has been a huge success with filling openings in our Health Centers. The Summit at Rockwood South Hill has received more accolades, and Andrew Gorton, Executive Director of Resident Services, and Michelle Duke, Director of Food Service, presented our unique approach to dining to a packed house at the national LeadingAge conference. There’s a lot more to list, but we already have our sights set on the excitement of what lies ahead.

Alan Curryer, President & CEO

Employee Spotlight

Lori Klingman joined Rockwood Retirement

Communities in October as our Human Resources Director. Lori brings over 17 years experience in

the healthcare and senior living field. She

has a Masters in Business Administration. Lori is excited to see Rockwood, as an employer of choice, continue to acquire talented individuals. We are enhancing our Employee Health and Wellness program, and we continue to market the SmartDollar® program for financial well-being, while incorporating other benefits and programs that support employees’ mind, body and soul.

Rockwood Hawthorne’s Director of Food Service, Branden Moreau, competed with

other chefs from area retirement communities,

restaurants and caterers in the fundraising event, Cooking for a Cause. This event benefits the Greater Spokane County Meals on Wheels which provides hot meals to disabled and housebound seniors in our area. Branden and his team prepared a sumptuous menu, and their Butternut Squash Bisque with Cranberry Crème Fraiche and Spiced Honey Roasted Pepitas won the Best Appetizer Award!

Lindsey Rijon, RN, joined Rockwood Retirement

Communities in March as Director of Nursing for Rockwood South Hill. Lindsey has worked with

Dan DeBoise, Executive Director of Health and

Wellness Services, to streamline the administration staff resulting in

greater efficiency.Rockwood’s NAC Training Program has

been a huge success to help bring new team members to healthcare areas at both campuses. Also worth a mention - her team had a great survey and we are proud to have received a 5-star rating!

Sarah Kellogg is the Housekeeping Supervisor at Rockwood South Hill. Sarah was nominated by her peers to participate in

LeadingAge Washington’s Leadership Institute. “My biggest

takeaway was how truly important it is to be authentic — not only when leading my team but working with other teams and leaders as well. If I am not the true me all the time, then people will see that and lose trust in me.”

Up to Speed with Technology

The use of technology is everywhere. In this past year, our Information Technology (IT) systems have taken a huge leap forward throughout our organization. On the surface, we have improved individual computer work stations, upgraded system software, and added high-speed wi-fi throughout our facilities. Behind the scenes, we have installed more than 100 access points, laid miles of cabling, increased to 10 gig network speed, upgraded and expanded servers and switches, and enhanced back-up systems, data storage, and more.

Driving much of this has been our complete conversion to electronic medical records with PointClickCare. This transition has required many hours of team member training and data input, as well as the need to build a reliable system and one that can operate in the event of an outage or emergency.

The Maintenance team uses WorxHub for work orders and maintenance tracking. This mobile app allows the Maintenance team to check work orders, look up information, and update status while in the field. Nursing and Food Service team members are using OnShift, a work scheduling software. This app has helped these larger departments to ensure consistent staffing and effectively fill open shifts, helping to improve overall efficiencies and reduce overtime labor costs.

The Marketing department has moved to a new contact management software called Enquire. This huge undertaking involved many hours of

data transfer and training. We are excited about how this program allows us to automate our marketing campaigns and how it syncs

with Rockwood’s social media and website. Along with all of this software, we have also enhanced

our security systems. This investment includes electronic keypads, camera intercoms and sensors for building access, and an increase in video surveillance.

As you can see, it has been a big year for us in terms of technology. We’re truly up to speed and will continue with technology updates through our strategic planning.

Manager on Duty (MOD)

Every few years, Rockwood initiates a Resident Satisfaction Survey to provide residents and/or their representatives an opportunity to tell us what we are doing well, and what areas have potential for improvement. One result of the last survey is our Manager On Duty (MOD) program. The feedback we got from the survey helped us to see that we needed to have more management supervision on the weekends.

We implemented this program in January 2018, and have had great success! This program has been a real win-win for residents, visitors, and staff. The MOD is asked to check in with all departments, look into any staffing issues, attend some events, walk or drive the entire campus, have lunch with the residents, conduct tours for marketing guests, and provide support wherever needed. Our management team rotates coverage for the year, and adjusts their weekday schedule to compensate for their weekend hours. For many of our managers, it is their favorite day because they do not have to go to meetings and take care of their daily departmental responsibilities. They actually spend the majority of their time interacting with our residents and staff, getting to know them and helping as needed. You asked, and we listened!

Be on the lookout for a Resident Satisfaction survey coming in early 2019! We look forward to hearing from all of our residents!

NAC Training Program

We started our own Nursing Assistant Certified (NAC) Training program in February 2017, after receiving approval from the Washington State Department of Health. Since then, we have held 5 classes and graduated 52 students. Each class can take up to 10 students with one instructor, although we have added instructors to get as many as 13 students in our class at one time. The class minimum requirement for instruction is 35 hours of theory (class time), 25 hours of lab time (hands-on practice in our classroom), and 62 clinical hours spent at the bedside in our care areas under the watchful eye of our instructor(s) and other Rockwood mentoring staff. The total duration of the class over the 4-week program is at least 122 hours, including graduation. During those 4 weeks, students spend the majority of time at Rockwood South Hill, and we’ve also taken the class to our Hawthorne campus.

Although the class is provided free of charge, it is not easy to enter. Each student is interviewed by hiring managers prior to the class as if they were applying for a job. Although Rockwood does not guarantee employment with the successful completion of the class, Rockwood has been able to offer all students employment at one of our campuses. Through assistance from the Rockwood Residents’ Foundation, we have been able to support this career advancement of Rockwood team members coming from other Rockwood departments. That support comes in the form of a grant which provides financial support for a current Rockwood employee who have to take the four weeks off for the class without forfeiting their regular income from their position.

Marketing never rests on its laurels, and with occupancy so high, it’s a great time to shift our message and talk about the lifestyles we promote. Every day, we learn of a new story, activity or interest that one of our residents enjoys, or we hear about how much they like a class, meal, or program that Rockwood provides. For some, they simply just love living here because of all the great people who also live and work here.

With the launch of a new website in September, one of our goals is to feature more videos on the website. So this fall, we did a series of lifestyle videos that provide potential residents some insight about the type of people who live at Rockwood and some of the things that they enjoy doing.

• We invite you to visit our new website at www.rockwoodretirement.org. To view the new videos, click on Life at Rockwood, and select Resident Spotlight.

• Follow us on Facebook at facebook.com/rockwoodretirement. When we launch new videos, our Facebook followers will be the first to know!

Rockwood Residents’ Foundation Mission: The Rockwood Residents’ Foundation assists Rockwood Retirement Communities in carrying out its mission – to provide excellence in service and housing to older adults by promoting independence, wellness and lifelong vitality. To that end, the Foundation seeks, accepts and stewards gifts from residents, friends and staff.

I have had the honor of serving on the Rockwood Resident’s Foundation Board forfive years and as Chair for the past two years. Our talented Board, comprised of

South Hill and Hawthorne residents, is administered by Marianne McCormack, Director of Development. We also have three dedicated committees that report and make recommendations to the Board: the South Hill Advisory Committee, the Hawthorne Advisory Committee, and the Investment Advisory Committee.

The Foundation’s mission is to assist Rockwood Retirement Communities by providing excellence in service and housing to older adults. To that end, the Foundation seeks, accepts, and stewards gifts from residents, friends, and staff. We are committed to fulfilling our promise that no resident will ever be asked to leave Rockwood due to their inability to pay, through no fault of their own.

Combining both campuses, the Foundation received $487,964 in contributions and $403,457 in investment gains. This brought the Foundation’s total assets to $6,286,089.

Here is a list of the Foundation’s accomplishments in fiscal year 2018.• Provided $175,000 in Residents’ Assistance (South Hill)• Provided $9,500 in Residents’ Assistance (Hawthorne)• Provided $44,000 for Wellness & Exercise (South Hill)• Provided $28,000 in funding for the new woodshop (South Hill)• Provided $13,100 in Employee Assistance and scholarships (total between both campuses)• Raised $103,000 through our Holiday Lights fundraising campaign (South Hill)• Raised $11,500 through our Annual Fundraising Luncheon (total between both campuses)• Raised $8,500 through our Stars In Our Lives fundraising campaign (Hawthorne)• Raised $27,500 through gifts in honor or in memory of people (South Hill)

I would also be remiss if I didn’t thank the Corner Store volunteers for their commitment to the Foundation, raising approximately $56,000 for Residents’ Assistance.

The Foundation was formed in 1990 and since then, the Foundation has provided approximately $4 million in total support!

The number of O.W. Young Legacy Society members (“OWYLS”) increased by 8 in fiscal year 2018. Residents who make a commitment to a legacy gift become members of the O.W. Young Legacy Society.

The Foundation wouldn’t be near the success it is today without you. Thank you for your support and generosity.

The Rockwood South Hill Elves put in over 200 hours of work this year to make 75 wooden toys -- trucks, cars and cradles complete with dolls and blankets. The Sassy Stitchers made the blankets for the cradles. These lovingly made toys are given to children through Volunteers of America. The Foundation paid for all the lumber to make these toys.

The Elves pictured left to right are Donna Gumm, Don Oakley, Jim Dillon, Ev Best, and Tom Johnson. Not pictured are Jack Harvey and Anna Roberts.
