Our mission, as a nonprofit organization, is to enhance the North Florida community’s

quality of life by providing diverse and memorable arts and entertainment

experiences, and by preserving a unique historic Jacksonville landmark.

Letter from the Chairman & President

Dear Friends, Supporters and Community Members,

We are pleased to present the Florida Theatre’s Annual Report for its 2016 fiscal year.

The Florida Theatre Performing Arts Center, Inc. is the nonprofit corporation that since 1987 has managed, preserved and programmed the historic Florida Theatre in downtown Jacksonville, in a public/private partnership with the City of Jacksonville, which owns the building. The city is responsible for the exterior of the building, and the nonprofit is responsible for everything that happens within the building, including management, maintenance, preservation and programming.

Each year, in addition to trying to bring as many people downtown as possible to experience the magic of a live performance, we strive to provide a diverse calendar of events that embraces and celebrates the diversity of our city. As you peruse the pages of this report, you will see evidence of that effort, with almost all genres of the performing arts represented this year, including jazz, blues, R&B, comedy, spoken word, country music, theatre, musical theatre, film, children’s theatre, rock, classic rock, classical music, crossover classical, and more.

In addition to our own programming, we were pleased to be the site for a number of important civic

events and benefit performances produced by other organizations this year. Some of these events were returning for another year, and some, like the TEDx conference, were utilizing the Florida Theatre as a resource for the very first time. (TEDx is coming back for year two this fall!)

For the 4th year in a row, all this activity resulted in the Florida Theatre being named by the concert industry magazine Pollstar as one of the Top 100 Theatre Venues Worldwide, as measured by attendance reported to Pollstar. The Florida Theatre is one of the most attended venues anywhere because of Jacksonville’s support.

As a nonprofit corporation, by law, the proceeds of our activity must remain within the organization to be reinvested in the building or more programming. In other words, when the Florida Theatre is successful, Jacksonville reaps the rewards. We don’t ship our income off to a corporate office somewhere; it all stays right here. We like to say that the Florida Theatre is by, of and for Jacksonville.

We thank the more than 167,000 ticket buyers and more than 1,500 donors and Friends of the Theatre for your support this year, and look forward to serving you in the coming year.

The Florida Theatre Performing Arts Center, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation.
