Letter from the PresidentAchieve With Us is The Arc of Evansville’s motto, and as you review this 2015-2016 Annual Report and read about the significant impacts being made in the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, I am convinced you will be amazed and proud that you play a role in those

achievements. With the services of The Arc of Evansville, individuals with disabilities are being recognized as valuable, contributing members of our community, but more importantly, their quality of life is improving.

When The Arc of Evansville was founded in 1954, parents were encouraged to place children with disabilities in institutional settings, robbing families of precious relationships and depriving the community of working and socializing with individuals with disabilities. Making family life better has always been a motivation for the services we provide. We help families address complicated and often overwhelming care issues like navigating funding resources that are limited, but necessary for critical services. In addition, we assist families as they take on more caregiving responsibilities than anticipated for their family members with disabilities.

As family members take on more and more of their loved one’s caregiving, the State of Indiana saves millions of dollars each year by relying on community-based services, like those offered by The Arc of Evansville and utilized by the

families and individuals we serve. Community-based services are lower-cost services because they are supplemental, not full-time, supports. Yet, The Arc of Evansville continues to face the effects of persistent budget cuts at the federal, state, and local levels.

You - our friends, neighbors, and donors - provided assistance in filling the budget gaps for 2015-2016 so that we could continue providing much-needed services for individuals with disabilities in our community; and I am sincerely grateful to you for your dedication to improving the lives of individuals with disabilities. You have shown that despite the vast needs of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, together, as a community, we can and will make a difference.

Will you join me in continuing to demonstrate your support for people with disabilities? Will you consider giving generously to The Arc of Evansville in 2017? With your 2017 annual donation, will you commit to making The Arc of Evansville one of your top three nonprofits that you choose to support?

I encourage you to act now by offering your financial support so individuals with disabilities can continue to be empowered to build relationships, gain independence, and achieve their full potential; and so our vision for a community that values all individuals is a reality for our local community.

Sincerely,

Celebrating VolunteersIndividuals volunteer for a wide variety of reasons, but many say they volunteer to give back to their community. Volunteering and doing good for others and the community has the potential to provide a sense of accomplishment for the volunteer and increase their self-confidence. The Arc of Evansville is fortunate to have many dedicated individuals who give of their time and talent to see that individuals with disabilities reach their full potential. We thank our volunteers for adding value to the work and mission of The Arc of Evansville, and we encourage those who have an interest in becoming a volunteer to visit our website at www.arcofevansville.org for more information.

The Impact of Programs and Services

Arc IndustriesClose to three-fourths of the clients served increased their work skills and 100% completed safety training and are working to achieve competitive community employment and increase wages.

Arc Industries is a thriving assembly, packaging, and distribution facility that offers employment and vocational training to approximately 250 adult individuals with disabilities each year. Our staff members support our clients so they can develop work skills and social skills to obtain and maintain competitive community employment.

Child Life CenterMore than half of the children who received our special education services entered kindergarten with an eliminated or reduced need for additional services, which leads to a significant cost savings for taxpayers.

Our Child Life Center (CLC) provides high-quality programs in an inclusive environment for approximately 180 children ages six weeks to twelve years, both with and without disabilities, by nurturing their social, emotional, physical, and intellectual growth.

Behavior Support Services9 out of 10 individuals served reduced their undesirable behaviors, resulting in greater opportunity for community engagement and inclusion.

Behavior Support Services determines the reason or function of undesirable behaviors and assists individuals in replacing them with more appropriate social and adaptive skills leading to increased relationships and independence in the community. Eighty-eight individuals received services during the year.

Community Job Link Sixty days after job placement, 8 in 10 clients remained on the job. People with disabilities tend to have a longer tenure in their jobs, resulting in decreased turnover and training costs for employers.

Community Job Link assists approximately 80 adult individuals with disabilities in locating competitive employment in the community. Other services include job coaching and follow-along services for individuals who are working in the community.

Connections For LifeOne hundred percent of clients were able to achieve self-sufficiency levels that allowed them to remain at home in the family unit, resulting in a significant cost savings for taxpayers.

Connections For Life provides support to approximately 80 youth and adult individuals with developmental disabilities that allows them to become an integral part of their communities by volunteering at local nonprofit organizations; participating in social, educational, and recreational activities; enhancing their quality of life with increased social interaction; and developing new friendships. In-home supports that include assistance with daily routines, personal care, supervision, and monitoring in the family home with or without family members present are also available.

School-to-Work CollaborativeThree out of four students served increased their job skills by participating in an internship opportunity. This additional training improved their workforce skill set, with the potential for more job opportunities.

The School-to-Work Collaborative provides approximately 65 high school students from the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation, who have an Individual Education Plan (IEP), assistance with job coaching and resources needed to be successful in future employment.

Day Services For Adults Eight in ten clients receiving communication skills training achieved their communication goals and improved their ability to communicate their wants and needs to others, which is crucial for self-sufficiency.

Day Services For Adults provides intensive training to approximately 140 individuals with severe, profound, and multiple disabilities to increase independence and inclusion in their communities. Activities center on personal interests and include daily living skills, recreation and leisure activities, self-advocacy skills, and accessing community resources.

Residential ServicesTwo-thirds of individuals receiving services increased their independent living skills, which resulted in the assurance of living as independently as possible and a reduced level of stress on the family.

These supports are available to individuals with disabilities who live in supported living sites such as their own homes and apartments with roommates.

Magellan’s SuccessMagellan is a four-year-old child who has been receiving services through the Child Life Center’s therapeutic preschool program for the last two years. This preschool program is a partnership with the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation (EVSC) to provide inclusive and therapeutic education services for children three to five years-of-age who have been identified by EVSC as having special needs.

Magellan was primarily nonverbal when he started the program. After two years of services, even though Magellan still has limited communication, he is now reacting when others communicate with him. He understands and responds to his name being spoken. He imitates the actions of the other children in his class. Some of Magellan’s favorite things to do in class are playing in the house on the playground, having snack time, and anything related to music. When he hears the song, “Going on a Lion Hunt”, Magellan sings along during some parts of the song and shows his progress.

Magellan is achieving and increasing his ability to communicate, and these milestones are assisting teachers and therapists in truly knowing what Magellan is and is not able to understand. This information will help his teachers and therapists continue to work on his communication skills. Magellan is achieving at The Arc of Evansville.

The Impact of Programs and Services

Katie, Nick, and Andrea Tieken

From a Family Member’s PerspectiveKatie is a board member with The Arc of Evansville, but more importantly, the proud sister-in-law to Andrea Tieken, her husband’s twin sister. Andrea is a team member at Arc Industries where she exhibits a strong work ethic, positive attitude, and the ability to learn new tasks quickly. Andrea participates in many activities throughout the community as a result of the multiple programs she’s involved with through The Arc of Evansville. Katie says, “Without the services of this organization, Andrea would not be the person she is today.” Andrea participates in recreational activities, gives back to her community by volunteering, and also works to increase her skills so she can achieve her personal goals and make progress towards independence.

Katie believes it is the little things in life that many people take for granted that are the things Andrea enjoys the most, such as going out to eat at her favorite restaurant, getting to see friends and family, and buying ice cream cakes for every occasion. Katie is amazed as she watches how others interact with Andrea, including Katie’s own children. She says when people are around Andrea they learn a life lesson on how to treat individuals with disabilities. Katie encourages people to look around and take notice of the individuals with disabilities who are contributing in our community. She advises, “If you encounter someone with a disability, remember to do a few things. First, smile and acknowledge the person. Second, focus on their abilities, rather than any disability. Third, give adequate time for the individual to respond and speak their mind because everyone has ideas and talents to contribute. Lastly, and most importantly, treat the person like you would like to be treated.”

Individuals with disabilities are being impacted by The Arc of Evansville, and in return, those same individuals are impacting others in our community.
