ANNUAL REPORT 2016 Advocates Taking Action While Citizen Advocacy loves to celebrate the good times that come from matching people in one-to-one relationships (witness the photos on this page!), we also wanted to take time to think about the vigorous advocacy and protection that also comes as a result of bringing two people together in a Citizen Advocacy match. The last year has been a very tough one for a number of folks, and advocates have come forward to represent their partners’ interests on many fronts. Three examples are described below - — we have changed names to protect people’s privacy. Dawn and her husband were facing immediate eviction from their home for falling behind on their mortgage, as well as having had their power shut off for lack of payment. Health issues had cost Dawn her job of many years. Tom stepped in as a crisis advocate and as a result, they are still in their home with their utilities restored. Nine years ago, Donna was matched with Samantha. At that time, Donna was threatened with eviction, and Sam did all kinds of work to see that Donna’s home was brought up to standard. Then last summer, Donna’s health began to fail. Since then, Sam has been with Donna every step of the way. She has lobbied doctors for transfers to hospitals that offer particular specialists, and then has regularly visited these hospitals, two of which are an hour away. Donna depends on Sam to translate the doctors’ information, and when she is unable to participate, Sam is now the person the doctors confer with on their decisions. Samuel, an attorney, has taken on the role of crisis advocate to see that Jerry, who is in prison, will be released without having to stand trial or get swallowed up in a justice system that he and his family need help and clout to successfully navigate. that come from matching people in one-to-one relationships(witness the photos on this page!), we also wanted to take timeto think about the vigorous advocacy and protection that alsocomes as a result of bringing two people together in a CitizenAdvocacy match.

The last year has been a very tough one for a number of folks, and advocates have come forward to represent their partners’interests on many fronts. Three examples are described below -— we have changed names to protect people’s privacy.

Dawn and her husband were facing immediate eviction fromtheir home for falling behind on their mortgage, as well ashaving had their power shut off for lack of payment. Healthissues had cost Dawn her job of many years. Tom stepped in asa crisis advocate and as a result, they are still in their home withtheir utilities restored.

Nine years ago, Donna was matched with Samantha. At thattime, Donna was threatened with eviction, and Sam did allkinds of work to see that Donna’s home was brought up tostandard. Then last summer, Donna’s health began to fail.Since then, Sam has been with Donna every step of the way. Shehas lobbied doctors for transfers to hospitals that offerparticular specialists, and then has regularly visited thesehospitals, two of which are an hour away. Donna depends onSam to translate the doctors’ information, and when she isunable to participate, Sam is now the person the doctors conferwith on their decisions.

Samuel, an attorney, has taken on the role of crisis advocateto see that Jerry, who is in prison, will be released withouthaving to stand trial or get swallowed up in a justice system thathe and his family need help and clout to successfully navigate.

Dear Friends,

This year we were made more aware than ever of the magnitude ofwork done by our volunteers — without them we would never be ableto host the events we do or raise the money so essential to making thework of Citizen Advocacy a reality.

This year we celebrated the 30th Anniversary of our 5 and 10Kraces, and to put those on took the creativity and the sweat of over 70volunteers! These folks get up at dawn and brave whatever weather is thrown at them — thisyear it was cold and rainy — to see that the runners all know how to get where they need to go,and do so safely. They also perform myriad other tasks from registration to food service toensure a great day for all who participate.

For our theater event — celebrating its 15th anniversary this year — a die-hard group ofaround 20 gather a huge batch of fabulous auction items, pick menus and decorations, collateand mail over 800 invitations, gather 50 bottles of wine for the wine wall, and then manage allthe tasks of the evening itself. That the evening flows seamlessly is 100% down to them. Then comes our annual spaghetti dinner, where again about 30 people cook, buss and bottle

wash to feed well over 100 people, and manage a raffle and dessert table on top of that. These events allow us to have a role of hospitality in our community and to meet so many of

the people that go on to become more closely involved in the crucial work of Citizen Advocacy. So in addition to wanting to thank all of you for the many ways you support this work, this yearI’d like to give shout out to our volunteer power!!

With all our gratitude,

Barbara Jones-Belshaw, Board President

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT . . .

VOLUNTEER POWER!Volunteers prepare food for the spaghetti dinner andperform clean up after the race — neither eventcould happen without them!

OUR MISSIONCitizen Advocacy is a means to promote, protect, and defend the welfare and interests of, and justice for, persons who are impaired in competence ordiminished in status, or seriously physically or socially isolated, through one-to-one unpaid voluntarycommitments made to them by people who have relevant skills and resources.

Advocates choose one or several of many ways to understand, respond to, and represent that person’sinterests as if they were the advocate’s own, thus bringing their partner’s gifts and concerns into the circlesof ordinary community life. Many of these commitments last a lifetime.

OUR VISIONA world in which each life is valued, protected and celebrated for its uniqueness, through a vestedrelationship.
