A Word from the Director

Dear friends of the Arboretum,2015 was an exciting year for the Cedar Valley Arboretum! With the completion of the Hillside Welcome Garden and the addition of some beautiful, white rail fencing along our drive, we were able to create a single entrance into our gardens. This change has produced many positive outcomes, including the ability to increase our income through admission fees fornon - members and the

ability to track the number of visitors and where they arecoming from. In addition, we have almost completelyeliminated vandalism by enforcing specific hours of operation.

As some of you may know, 2016 marks 20 years from when the first trees were planted at the Cedar Valley Arboretum. It’s incredible to see the changes that have been made in just 20 years! For the Arboretum to continue growing and inspiring, our greatest challenge in the near future will be funding. We are a non-profit organization that is completely self-funded and without financial support from tax-based revenue. The Arboretum’s operational income comes primarily from donations, admission, membership, and programming. Because of this, your financial support through memberships and donations is more important than ever in securing a bright future for The Cedar Valley Arboretum. The Arboretum is a unique and special place in our community, and continues to inspire because of the generosity of our donors, partner organizations, members, and dedicated volunteers. Thank you so much for your support and hard work.

There are so many natural wonders to discoverat the Arboretum! With every changing season, each month, and even every week, there is something new andintriguing to see. From the beautiful display of crabapplesand tulips in the spring, to the amazing daylilies during the summer and the striking colors of fall, the Arboretum is a placethat continually inspires and connects us to nature.

95 degrees We had almost 21 inches of precipitation

during our 2015growing season

Over 3,000 tulips were planted in 2015, and

we’ll be able toenjoy them spring 2016

Walking through the gardens last year, you probably noticed that some changes were happening at the Arboretum. One change that we’re especially proud of is the MasterGardeners Orchard. Through a partnership with the MasterGardeners of Black Hawk County, and generous grants from the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa, The Black Hawk Gaming Association, and Green Scene; the Arboretum started a 1 acre orchard that will serve as an excellent demonstration for the types of fruit trees that will thrive in our climate and how best to care for them. TheMaster Gardeners Orchard will soon produce over 10,000 pounds of fruit each year that will be donated to the Northeast Iowa Food Bank. What an awesome project!
