To bridge the skills and knowledge gap of underprivileged women,

Kamalini Vocational Training Centre was launched by Dr. J. Kunnacherry,

Ms. Monica Rita de Souza and Ms. Maria Mendes in 2007. They are the

founding trustees of Protsahan, a New Delhi charitable trust. They

mobilized friends and volunteers to encourage marginalized women –

migrants from rural areas, school drop-outs, domestic workers with limited

education – to gain skills and education to bring their families ahead. The

Kamalini project opened its doors in a couple of rented rooms with one

open school teacher in 2007 in the urban village of Shahpur Jat, near Siri

Fort. Since then, the Kamalini team have trained over 1500 beneficiaries

helping them grow in livelihood skills in sewing, cooking, housekeeping

and computers to find a way forward for themselves and their families.

In 2009 Protsahan enrolled in the Delhi Government Technical Education

Community Outreach Scheme for government certification of the sewing

and cooking classes imparted in Kamalini’s second location, the Kishangarh

centre, near Vasant Kunj. In 2010 Protsahan signed a Memorandum of

Understanding with the registered society Educational and Development

Initiatives to open a new Kamalini centre in Sohna Road (Gurgaon,

Haryana) with high-quality installations and a bigger capacity. The new

location is under construction due to open in 2016.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of a team of volunteers, the dedication of our

staff, and the support of our donors, either directly or via Give India,

Kamalini Vocational Training project has trained over 500 needy women in

the fiscal year 2014-2015.

Training & Development

Women from low-income profilescan register for courses of three-month or six-month duration atKamalini to acquire livelihood skillsin sewing, computers andcooking. If the students attendregularly and clear the exams,some of which are externallycertified by the Delhi Governmentor NIIT, they are awardedcertificates of completion.

With the support of the Fundacion DASYC, BANKIA, and Bancaja Social Cooperation, Kamalini led training sessions in 21st

Century Employment Skills for more than 100 women and girls. The orientation fostered entrepreneurship and self-sustenance. As part of this project, twenty-one women have united to develop a business plan to use their skills and form a women's industrial cooperative.

On the occasion of Women’s day, Kamaliniwas invited by Nirmal Jyoti Charitable Society,Vasant Kunj, to conduct a session onimportance of skill development and financialindependence for around thirty-five women atMandi Gaon.

Kamalini held its annual programme forIndependence Day in August, 2014 inthe Kishangarh community centre withthe theme "Incredible India". Theevent witnessed scintillating danceperformances by Kamalini studentsfrom different states of the union.

A total of 146 certificates weredistributed to successful studentsincluding 117 Delhi GovernmentCertificates for courses certified underthe Technical Education CommunityOutreach Scheme, 18 Basic ComputerOperator Certificates recognized byNIIT, besides those are certified byKamalini internal exams.

In January 2015, Kamalini markedthe celebration of Republic Daywith a patriotic programme by thestudents and recognition of thosewho have successfully completedcourses and cleared examsInternational Cooking (5), NIITComputers (23), English (11) andTailoring.

Mr. Yadvinder Singh, State Vice President, and Mr. Sunil Ghavri, Mehrauli Block President, presented certificatesto students successfully completing the Delhi Government Certified Courses in sewing and cooking.

Mr. Tejinder Bedi , CSR Manager from Magneti Marelli Powertrain, awarding an NIIT certificate to Caroline, one of the 23 students who cleared the external exam in the September – January period.

We are grateful for the Main Tenduevolunteers Isabelle , Florence and Sophie who weekly craft a menu,

arrange the ingredients and impart classes with recipes for domestic

workers to gain skills in International Cuisine. The course completes with an

exam judged by an external jury.

Main Tendue Volunteers in Production Centre and Cooking

Main Tendue, a charity actiongroup in Delhi, supportsKamalini both financially andwith volunteers who share theirskills. Maud, Christine, Stanisand Geraldine designed andsourced materials for productsthat could be made for sale bystudents alumni of Kamalini.

The Kamalini Production Centre helps students apply their learning and to boost their family income, while also supporting Kamalini. This is how one student, Sakshi Rupa, (right) was able to pay for her training.

Fostering Solidarity

The production centre items are sold indifferent charity melas (fairs) organised withthe help of volunteers as well as bycompanies who support Kamalini. This yearKamalini exhibited in the French Charity Fete,the British High Commission Winter Mela,and the Capital IQ Diwali Mela.

Besides these, volunteers organized othersales to promote our cause and to fund raisefor sustainability, displaying also exportsamples donated by El Corte Ingles, aSpanish department store with a buyinghouse in Gurgaon.

An on going event are the regular KamaliniVillage Walks which allows visitors a chanceto understand and discover the heritage ofShahpur Jat and to see our centre in action.

Corporate Social Responsibility

As a part of its Impact Day celebration,professionals from Deloitte led trainingsessions for Kamalini students inNovember 2014. The interactivesessions helped the participantsbrainstorm potential business initiativesand develop skills in communications,time management, and interpersonaldealing, with tips on resume building,and interviewing.

McGraw Hill Financial also partnered with Kamalini for its Community ImpactMonth project, sponsoring the purchase of educational equipment. Eighteenvolunteers from Capital IQ led the session at our Kishangarh centre andconducted activities like nukkad natak (street play), cooking & embroiderycompetition, games and an interactive session with the beneficiaries.

Learning through networking and collaborations

“The Soul yet unspoken”

A youth initiative called Nayi Udaan and organised a photo exhibition with the theme “A soul still unspoken” showcasing the lives of women who emerged victorious from their struggles of life at Select Citywalk Mall. Kamalini also put up a stall displaying the work of its students. Volunteers from Nayi Udaan conducted an embroidery session at our Kishangarh centre showing how to enhance jute bags.

A student club at Jesus and Mary College (Delhi University) invited Kamalini to give a presentation about “Social Responsibility and Women Empowerment” in September 2014. Over a 100 students attended this talk and many came forward to understand volunteering opportunities at Kamalini. Following the success of the first NGO Connect meeting organised by the International Outreach group in April 2014, a second round of the meeting was held in November and Kamalini was invited for the same by Main Tendue.
