ANNUAL REPORT 2013
CHANGING THE DIALOGUE ON ISRAEL
Hoop dreams: NBA basketball star Amar’e Stoudemire shoots hoops in Kiryat Malachi, Israel, with children studying science through sports as part of an innovative Hebrew U program supported by CFHU.
Dr. Osnat Cohen, Director, Authority for Community and Youth at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem
CFHU in the periphery2009CFHU initiates and funds the ACY program to bring hundreds of middle school students from southern communities besieged by rocket fire to a weeklong science program in Jerusalem.
2010–2011CFHU sponsors “Lend a Hand to Heal,” bringing 200+ S’derot youth to Jerusalem for a weeklong science program at the Joseph Meyerhoff Center.
2011–2012CFHU supports a weekly after-school educational, motivational, and stress reduction outreach program for S’derot children. CFHU initiates and supports expanding the program to an Arabic public school in Lod and to kids with special needs in Yavne.
2012–2013CFHU initiates and supports the “Science in the Periphery” program in five communities, bringing dynamic science education programs to more than 250 pupils each year.
2013–2014CFHU continues to support multidisciplinary science programs in five communities in Israel’s periphery, including “Science through Sport,” which promotes science education to youngsters in grades 3–12, with the New York Knicks’ Amar’e Stoudemire.
SPOTLIGHT: AUTHORITY FOR COMMUNITY AND YOUTH
“ Canadian Friends and the entire Canadian community have been our strongest supporters. Without their support, these programs would not exist.”
CFHU reaCHes oUt to yoUtH
In a land whose greatest asset is the brainpower of its citizens, every Israeli youth who pursues a university education helps ensure the country’s success and security.
But for many youth in Israel’s geographic and socioeconomic peripheries, postsecondary education can seem like an unattainable goal. In southern communities such as S’derot, Kiryat Malachi, Lod, Yavne, and Kiryat Ekron, young people face significant economic and cultural barriers to education. Few have parents or other role models with a university education.
That’s why Canadian Friends of the Hebrew University (CFHU) continues to spearhead and support outreach programs and initiatives for youth in marginalized
Israeli communities. In 2013, CFHU continued to work closely with the Hebrew University’s Authority for Community and Youth (ACY), broadening and deepening our focus on making education accessible to all Israeli youth. Through community and social programs, e-learning, science camps, and leadership seminars, CFHU has helped to build and strengthen ties between these peripheral communities and the Hebrew University.
The ACY, says its director, Dr. Osnat Cohen, operates on the belief that education is integral to creating resilient and economically viable communities in Israel. Its Joseph Meyerhoff Youth Center for Advanced Studies enlists Hebrew U science grad students to work in Israeli communities to enrich curriculum and stimulate interest in the sciences. Its
Belmonte Science Center for Youth, a state-of-the-art lab complex on the Hebrew University campus, has earned an international reputation for advancing science education for high school students.

In 2013, as the Canadian Jewish News stated, Canadian Friends of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (CFHU) not only did an outstanding job of promoting and supporting the Hebrew University, but also “managed to raise the bar in its outreach efforts both on behalf of the University and for Israelis at large.”
From a star-studded gala in Toronto featuring iconic film actor Morgan Freeman, to partnering in the production and launch of the IMAX film JERUSALEM, to the launch of a partnership with Montreal-based KANPE that will send Haitian students to study agriculture at Hebrew U, to the great international success of the “Searching for the Next Einstein” contest, CFHU has helped to shape and promote an Israeli brand that features creativity, knowledge, and ingenuity, rather than focusing on conflicts.
We have also helped to promote the Hebrew University within Israel, in particular to youth in the periphery of the country for whom post-secondary education is all too often a remote possibility. In this annual report, you can read about CFHU’s focus on building relationships with young people through our partnerships with the Hebrew University’s Authority for Community and Youth. Our goal is to help make a university education accessible to every young person in Israel.
We have moved significantly closer toward our goal of raising $50 million for the Institute for Medical Research Israel-Canada (IMRIC), with $30 million raised so far: Vancouverite Michael Levy’s major gift to establish the Michael L. Levy Family Auditorium at IMRIC represents a major and much-appreciated step toward reaching this milestone. We have developed new academic partnerships in Ottawa and Montreal, and have been inspired by the breakthroughs by Hebrew University researchers and their Canadian counterparts.
2013 also marked a change in leadership for CFHU. After five years of dedicated and able leadership, our national chair, Torontonian Nathan Lindenberg, stepped down from the position. Nathan received an honourary fellowship from the Hebrew University in June 2013, and we can’t think of a more fitting tribute. We thank Nathan for his immense contributions to CFHU, and are delighted to welcome Murray Palay as the new CFHU national chair.
We celebrate a year of increasingly fruitful partnerships, academic successes, skilled and engaged leadership, innovative programming, and increased recognition for CFHU as a top thought leader and promoter of the Hebrew University and Israel. Moving forward, CFHU will continue to broaden the conversation around Israel and to support its best and brightest minds.

The dedication of this laboratory marks a new era of innovative research at the Brojde Center.
Searching for the Next EinsteinCFHU’s inaugural “Searching for the Next Einstein” campaign asked the worldwide online community to come up with the best ideas to help improve the world. The contest garnered more than 1,600 entries from some 35 countries. More than 143 million people accessed information about
the contest, which was featured in the Wall Street Journal, making it one of the most effective worldwide campaigns for the Hebrew University, Canadian Friends, and Israel.
Charles Rose, of London, Ontario, won the $10,000 prize for his innovative idea of using genetically modified dragonflies to reduce the harmful effects of carbon dioxide atmospheric build-up. Rose visited the University with his daughter and presented his idea at Hebrew University’s Board of Governors meeting in June.
The 2014 Next Einstein contest — in partnership with the Shaw and Global networks and National Geographic — is now underway.
CFHU at RothbergAs part of CFHU’s ongoing focus on the next generation of Jewish communal leadership, CFHU president and CEO Rami Kleinmann brought his considerable expertise into the classroom to teach a 2013 summer course in “Fundraising in the Age of Social Media” at the Rothberg International School’s one-year program in non-profit management and leadership. Kleinmann brought in New York Knicks basketball star Amar’e Stoudemire as a guest lecturer.
Vancouver’s Michael Levy continued his longtime family tradition of supporting Jewish education with the establishment of the Michael L. Levy Family Auditorium (pictured on cover, right foreground, in front of the IMRIC building) at IMRIC.

building lifelong relationshipsCFHU and Canadian universities partnered with Hebrew U to offer the Mishpatim law program (University of Manitoba), “wet and dry” water courses (University of Toronto), and a course on God in Israel (Carleton University), among others.
Exciting new courses include an English MBA program in startup and innovation, a new undergraduate film program, and a summer program in innovation. We are also pleased to announce a new exchange agreement with the University of Western Ontario and a renewed exchange agreement with the University of British Columbia; these agreements pave the way for many Ontario and British Columbia students to visit the Hebrew University and Israel.
ScholarshipsCFHU awarded approximately $200,000 in scholarships in 2013. Another approximately $400,000 was awarded from our Ontario University Fund.• Three 2013 Bernard J. Persiko Merit Scholarships,
totalling $30,000, were awarded to students from Ryerson, McGill, and Hebrew universities.
• CFHU sponsored four doctoral and postdoctoral students with $15,000 Rabin scholarships at the
Hebrew University’s Harry S. Truman Institute for the Advancement of Peace.
Connecting with AlumniA year, a semester, or a summer at the Hebrew University: for so many Canadians, those fleeting months in Jerusalem are the beginning of a lifelong connection not only to Hebrew U, but to Israel and to a network of Canadian peers.
Canadian alumni are one of CFHU’s most valuable assets. They represent our future leadership, our best ambassadors to Israel and the Hebrew University, and our strongest support base. In 2013:• We continued to cultivate strong connections
with Canadian students in Israel through special events, receptions, and other social programming in Jerusalem — like a Canada Day party, cohosted with the Rothberg International School!
• We built upon those connections in Canada
with alumni events, strategy sessions, and mentorship programs. Nine mentor-mentee pairs are learning from and with each other and building engagement with a larger network of Canadian friends and alumni.
• Seventeen student alumni ambassadors now promote the Hebrew University at campuses across Ontario, and CFHU plans to expand the program across Canada in the near future.
• We successfully launched our inaugural annual alumni fundraising campaign.
• Our Alumni CONNECT initiative was launched to develop future CFHU leadership by engaging and connecting alumni of all ages with the ongoing work of the Hebrew University.
• More than 120 alumni and Friends gathered at Toronto’s Spoke Club for a party that evoked the “good old days” at Hebrew U.

live, learn & explore: Israel and Tuscany“Israel in the Forefront of Excellence” was the theme of CFHU’s sold-out 2013 Live, Learn & Explore trip. Participants were taken back in time to Jewish life in central Italy during the Renaissance, with walking tours and visits to ancient synagogues, cemeteries, and Jewish ghettos and communities throughout Tuscany. Dr. Rachel Elior, a professor in the department of Jewish thought at the Hebrew University, accompanied the trip and provided daily lectures on topics as varied as Jewish-Italian sacred and mundane literature, the history of Jewish Italian women, and Italian Kabbalah.
In Israel, the trip visited all three campuses for intimate meetings with Hebrew U scholars involved in a range of innovative projects in the areas of humanities, agriculture, science, medical research, and community outreach. Participants were so inspired by the University’s outreach programs for underserved youth in the community of Kiryat Malachi that they raised funds in support of several programs in that community’s school.

“The Voice” for HU: The legendary Barbra Streisand received an honourary doctorate from the Hebrew University.
Canadians were a strong and proud contingent at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s 76th annual Board of Governors (BoG) meeting.
Vancouver’s Michael Levy was on hand with one of his daughters, Victoria, for the dedication of the Michael L. Levy Family Auditorium at IMRIC, and was honoured at the Wall of Benefactors. Two Montreal couples, Lillian
and Bryant Shiller and Michael and April Rosenfeld, were honoured at the Wall of Life.
At the annual Canadian dinner, outgoing CFHU national chair Nathan Lindenberg — who also received an honourary fellowship from the University — was recognized for his dedication and
commitment, and Murray Palay was installed as the new chair. Special guests at the dinner included Canadian ambassador to Israel Paul Hunt and Canadian minister of foreign affairs the Hon. John Baird. Attendees met and celebrated with dozens of Canadian scholarship recipients.
This year, the BoG joined forces with the fifth
Israeli Presidential Conference: “Facing Tomorrow 2013.” At the conference, the State of Israel and the international community celebrated Israeli President Shimon Peres’s 90th birthday. Peres was serenaded by 2013 Hebrew U honourary degree recipient Barbra Streisand.

LEADERSHIP SPOTLIGHT: AUTHORITY FOR COMMUNITY AND YOUTH
Science Through SportsPhilanthropist and youth anti-poverty ambassador Amar’e Stoudemire — who also happens to be the 6’11” power forward for the New York Knicks — visited the Hebrew University in the summer of 2013 to see firsthand the Hebrew U Youth Periphery Program “Science through Sports.” The program, says director Osnat Cohen, capitalizes on students’ interest in sports to learn about science, from the physics of the arc of the basketball to the makeup of the plastic polymers in sports shoes.
Stoudemire met with kids from the under-serviced municipalities of Kiryat Ekron and Kiryat Malachi, where he shot some hoops, offered words of inspiration, and took part in a science class. He and some students from the program also met with Israeli President Shimon Peres.
CFHU looks forward to developing a partnership with Stoudemire and his foundation, says CFHU president and CEO Rami Kleinmann. “There is a clear alliance between Amar’e’s philanthropic vision and that of CFHU’s science-focused outreach programs to under-served youth.”
Live, Learn & Explore Participants in CFHU’s highly successful annual Live, Learn & Explore trip visited Kiryat Malachi in October to learn more about the Hebrew University’s excellence in outreach. The group subsequently chose to contribute to the Joseph Meyerhoff Youth Center’s robotics program.
Youth To Youth Twin brothers Jake and Cole Wyman, and their cousins Lea Goldman and Hannah Wellen, celebrated their joint b’nei mitzvot on Jerusalem’s Mount Scopus in the summer of 2013. The cousins travelled from Toronto with several generations of their extended family — including their Bubby, CFHU’s own Executive VP Merle Goldman — to mark the occasion.
In Israel, the festivities included an evening spent stargazing and socializing with a group of students from the Jerusalem area while participating in an astronomy science camp.
In lieu of gifts, the cousins requested contributions to the ACY’s S’derot Outreach Project, which enables low-income youth to get involved in educational and motivational after-school and summer programs, with a larger goal of pursuing higher education.
Jake and Cole say they chose the project because it felt relevant to them. “I wanted to reach out to kids my own age, that I felt a connection to,” says Jake. “It made me understand that becoming a Bar Mitzvah is more than just about me,” says Cole. “It’s a way of understanding that you can do something to make a difference for the people in the world.”
Ecological and Sustainable Science Vancouver businessman and philanthropist Gary Segal visited Kiryat Ekron with his wife, Nanci, early this year, and also met with youth from Kiryat Malachi who were participating in a science program at the Hebrew U faculty of agriculture in Rehovot.
“I witnessed the enthusiastic way in which these young students embraced the wide range of activities, and heard from them directly how much they love being part of it,” says Segal, the joint CFHU Western Region and JNF Pacific Region Negev Dinner honouree for 2014. Segal chose to raise funds for ecological and sustainable scientific activities and leadership training programs. This joint educational program will be led by the JNF and implemented through the Joseph Meyerhoff Youth Center.
Future leaders: Torontonian twin brothers Jake and Cole Wyman (back row), and their first cousins Lea Goldman and Hannah Wellen (front row, 2nd and 3rd from right), with Jerusalem youth participating in an Authority for Community and Youth project. The cousins raised funds for the project as part of their b’nei mitzvot.
Funding the future: Vancouver’s Gary (in blue shirt) and Nanci Segal (in pink shirt and black blazer) visit an ecological science program for under-served youth organized by the ACY at the Hebrew University’s Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment in Rehovot.
