Annual Report

2012/13

Our MissionTrusting in Providence, and building upon the faith-centered heritage of our founding members, we are committed to serving needs and to fostering talents of people in the Cowichan Valley, especially of those not easily accepted elsewhere, through our therapeutic community at Providence Farm.

Our focus shall be upon the renewal of body and spirit, and upon people caring for the soil, and the soil nurturing the people.

The ProvidenceCommunityIn 1864, the 400 acres on which Providence Farm sits today was purchased by the Sisters of St. Ann. For the next 100 years, the Sisters operated a school on the site. In 1921, the iconic Providence House was built and classes continued until June 22, 1964, when the school’s bell rang for the last time.

In the late 1970s, a group of people with varied backgrounds and interests got together to discuss building community at the old St. Ann’s school site and farm in Duncan. By July 12, 1979, agreement had been reached to establish a non-profit society named the Vancouver Island Providence Community Association (VIPCA), named in memory of Sister Mary Providence, the founder of the school and programs in Duncan in the 1800s. In 2009, the Sisters of St. Ann generously gifted VIPCA the property.

The goal of VIPCA was, and remains today, to serve the needs and foster the talents of people in the Cowichan Valley, especially of those not easily accepted elsewhere. In the pages to come, you will learn of our many therapeutic programs and of the people that breathe life into Providence Farm today.

Welcome to Providence Farm.

Peter Bontkes Karen Bittner Chair, Board of Directors Executive Director

TherapeuticProgramsProvidence Farm is a therapeutic farm nestled at the base of Mount Tzouhalem in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Since 1979, the Vancouver Island Providence Community Association, a registered charity and non-profit society, has been operating creative and innovative programs at the Farm for adults and seniors in the Valley with mental health and age-related illnesses, brain injuries and developmental challenges:

• Horticultural therapy and training are offered in the greenhouses, nursery and market gardens.

• Employability skills and vocational training are emphasized in the furniture shoppe, small engine repair shop, General Store and Clothing Outreach Program, while culinary skills and healthy eating are taught in the kitchen.

• The Segues program brings together ten men with different developmental challenges who work throughout the Farm, tending the animals, caring for the grounds and offering a welcoming presence for people coming up the driveway (of which there are over 800 each week!).

• St. Ann’s Garden Club offers a safe and home-like environment to seniors and gives participants the opportunity to grow gardens in raised beds, prepare meals, talk, laugh and work at projects together.

• Artistic skills like sculpting, painting, knitting, weaving and spinning are nurtured in the Farm’s Art Studio and Loom Room.

All programs intentionally overlap, consistent with the idea that we are taking care of the Farm together. Friendships, skills development, improved health and a sense of well-being are made possible by the dedicated staff and volunteers of the Farm. The freedom to be and to make mistakes, and an accepting and respectful community make the Farm a place that is life-giving.

The Farm is also home to partner organizations – the Cowichan Valley Alternate School, the Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association, the Cowichan Folk Guild and Vancouver Island University – that share in our mission and contribute to our welcoming community environment and sustainability. At the end of each day, the goal at Providence Farm is to meet people where they are and to grow together, through the relationships that are built and nurtured here.

Your success and happiness lies in you. Resolve to keep happy, and your joy and you shall form an invincible host against difficulties.

~ Helen Keller

Investing in People – Growing TogetherThe desire at Providence Farm is to meet people where they are, and to grow together, through the relationships that are built and nurtured here. Supported Peer Mentor and Program Assistant positions have been established, and are staffed by former program participants and individuals who have shown promise to carry a mentoring role, and who have demonstrated commitment to their work here.

These mentorship positions are supported through sales and fundraising and through generous contributions from the Sisters of St. Ann and Esther’s Dream Foundation. These supported employees play key roles in the ongoing operation of our programs. As a result, people have the stability of a regular job and, in turn, support others.

If you want to walk fast, walk alone ... if you want to walk far, walk together.

~ African Proverb

Benefits of Our WorkLike the tangible results of a thriving garden, the success of Providence Farm is obvious.

Some of the results of our work in 2012/13 include:

• Over 75 participants in various therapeutic and vocational training programs attended the Farm each week.

• 10 Supported Peer Mentors and Programs Assistants were employed to support programs and participants.

• 25 full and part-time staff ran programs and provided “behind the scenes” administration.

• Over 12,000 healthy and nutritious lunches were served to participants, staff and volunteers from our Kitchen Program.

• Over 100 volunteers contributed to the on-going success and vibrant culture of the Farm and we were honoured to celebrate them during National Volunteer Week with a pancake breakfast.

• Dozens of Community Support Workers, Licensed Practical Nurse and Nursing Practicum Students and Horticultural Therapy Interns spent time working in and learning about the Farm’s program areas.

• 54 local gardeners grew their crops at the Farm, in 99 allotment gardens.

• In partnership with the Canadian Horticultural Therapy Association, the Farm hosted Horticultural Therapy classes at the Farm in November.

• The Farm’s animal family expanded by welcoming pigs and meat birds to the Farm.

• The Farm was featured in the Cowichan Valley’s tourism film Once Upon a Day.

• The Farm built 6 new raised garden beds so participants with physical barriers are able to access the therapeutic benefits of growing their own gardens.

• Several fundraising events were held during the year: St. Ann’s Plant Sale (April), Hoe Down (June), James Barber Memorial Dinner (October), Christmas Craft Fair (December) and Live Painting Auction (February).

• The Farm partnered with Vancouver Island University’s Culinary Arts Program to open a teaching restaurant on the Farm – The Farm Table.

• With funding from New Horizons for Seniors Program (Service Canada) and the family of Edvin Malones, a new greenhouse dedicated to the St. Ann’s Garden Club for seniors program was built.

• Partnering with Vancouver Island Health Authority, participants from Cowichan Lodge are enjoying the Farm’s therapeutic environment.

• Partnering with the Alzheimer Society of British Columbia, a Family Caregiver series of workshops as well as a weekly Minds in Motion fitness and social program for those with early stage memory loss are being offered at the Farm.

• The Farm’s role as a rural community centre continued with our being home to numerous weddings and family events, the Islands Folk Festival, Special Woodstock, the BC SPCA Paws for a Cause Walk, the Annual Hike for Hospice and CTRA’s Ride-a-thon.

Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

OurVolunteersWe depend on an army of volunteers who dedicate thousands of hours each year to planting, growing, cooking, cleaning, painting, building, repairing, gardening, grooming, governing, sharing and, most of all, believing in giving back and that the work is done better together. They not only volunteer their time, but also their hearts and spirits.

Each program and activity at the Farm benefits greatly from the strength and dedication of our volunteers. Quite simply we could not do it without them.

Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections once a year, but when you volunteer,

you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in.

Stories ofProvidenceThank you for all the opportunities and friendship you have shown me in the past few years. Truly, my involvement at Providence Farm has saved my life. I fear to think where I would be if I’d not found you people? My routine keeps me healthy and prevents me from falling in my black hole of depression. Thank you ever so much.

~ Providence Farm Employee

I am proud and happy to have the opportunity to work at Providence Farm. It is a beautiful place to be for the handicapped. And it is great to be employed.

~ Providence Farm Program Assistant

Keep up your amazing work at Providence Farm ... we so need places like this in our world.

~ Pat and Murray Owen

I enjoyed working at the Farm for a variety of reasons. The first reason was I met so many friendly, accepting people. I enjoyed recognition I received for a job well done. Finally, I felt a sense of delight with the nice scenery around the Farm.

~ Providence Farm Employee

As someone who has visited this stunning 400 acre property repeatedly over the last eight years, often with visiting tourists or journalists, I have been impressed at the resourcefulness the Providence Community Association has shown to build more self-sufficient programs in the face of Government and Social Agency cutbacks, while steadily improving and expanding their services to their clients and their presence in the community. Always performing with humility, dedication first and foremost to clients, and, indeed with providence, it became clear to me that this was a special place worthy of support.

~ Farm Folk/City Folk Society

I just felt compelled to let those of you know that after visiting Vancouver Island on holiday, and stumbling on to your farm, (I was on a 2,000 mile motorcycle ride with no direction, just where and what people would tell me I needed to see), that what you’re doing has touched me most out of my trip. Keep up the selfless acts.

~ Farm Visitor

Working here part-time keeps me knowing that I have a purpose in life. I could list a dozen big reasons why I’m still alive and well. I believe in a higher power and guardian angels and the love in the air around this beautiful place.

~ Providence Farm Program Assistant

We strongly support Providence Farm ... their essential service has enabled unique individuals to turn lives of despair into lives of success.
