DEDICATION

South Brunswick Islands’ (SBI’s) Annual Report for Rotary Year 2012 - 2013 is dedicated to The Charter Members of The Rotary Club of South Brunswick Islands. In February 1988 SBI Officers and Directors were installed by DG Alex Alexander and Wilmington Chartering President Jim Hundley. Bill Ozment was SBI’s first President and subsequent DG Milt Iossi was installed as SBI’s first Sgt at Arms. Two (2) of SBI’s current members, Mason Anderson and Dicky Powell, are Charter Members. We are forever in their debt. SBI’s Charter Members included: Mason Anderson, Larry Andrews, Claude Batchelor, Marilyn Boehm, Steve Candela, John Fazekas, Joseph Huber, Milton Iossi, Al Laughinghouse, Fred Lesh, John Madison, Hal Mason, Alex Mearns, John Marshall, Kenneth Neal, Steve Norris, Bill Ozment, Dicky Powell, John Richardson, James Sanderford, Edward Thomas Sr, Dean Walters, and Bob Williamson. We are proud that we have grown from 23 Charter Members in February 1988 to a 73 member club that is dedicated to "Service above Self” and “enriching the lives of the Kids of Brunswick County. We have gone from a “gleam in the eyes” of the Wilmington Downtown club to having founded the Shallotte and Leland Rotary Clubs – and “doing good in the world”. We now provide college scholarships to 11 WBHS Kids in Brunswick County and two via The First Tee of Brunswick County. Scholarships are partially supported via our Fore Kidz Golf Tournament Fundraiser, Raffle, and 100 Club Drawings each year. In addition we provide support to over 30 other not-for-profits in the local Brunswick County area. We are 2nd in District 7730, behind Wilmington, in our total contributions to our charity, the Rotary Foundation. We are always at the top in contributions per person. This “Service Above Self” is a direct result of the 23 Charter Members who met at Sea Trail on that fateful February evening 25 years ago. Hence our dedication of SBI’s Annual Report to our Charter Members.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Fellow Rotarians, This year has been an incredible journey and my sincere thanks go to each and every one of you for your support, confidence, laughter, shared tears and meaningful accomplishments.

Our SBI Club’s success is a direct result of a Consistent Mission to enrich the lives of the kids of Brunswick County - implemented by good people in key positions. The Club Leadership Plan asks that a President appoint dedicated, passionate, and skilled people to key leadership positions, who are committed to our Mission and Goals – then the President “gets out of the way” and provides needed support.

Looking back over the last 12 months we’ve shared memories and fellowship at the 25th Anniversary Celebration of Service, with 135 Rotarians, 11 of them Charter Members. Suzy, Glenn, and Martha did an outstanding job of planning and implementation. We shared camaraderie at a Spring Social at Tom and Susanne’s house. Martha and James developed a masterful Memorial Day program. Mark led 2 very successful and record fundraisers – our Fore Kidz Tournament and Fall Raffle. We provided Christmas for 11 families at Waccamaw Elementary-Middle. We distributed Citizenship Medals. We continued to define Rotary’s identity in our community with 11 Scholarships at WBHS and with the New Hope Electronic Medical Records (EMR) project. We developed the concept and preliminary plan for our fall Chilled and Grilled fundraiser.

In total SBI donated almost $69,000 to charities this Rotary year. That’s over $957 per SBI member. In summary, SBI provided over $21,577 or $300 per person to the Foundation and $47,321 to local Brunswick charities from our golf, raffle, 100 Club, and club donations. That’s approximately $657 per person to local charities. In total, that’s $68,898 or $ 957 per SBI member. At times, we reached very deep to make a difference; to wit, the New Hope Clinic EMR additional donation of $7,550.

For the first time in SBI’s history, we achieved 100% Sustaining Member (SM) status. Each SBI member donated at least $100 to the Rotary Foundation. We also recognized our first Major Donor – Denny and Robin Jordan. SBI added 3 new Paul Harris Society (PHS) Members – Tom Adams, Gene Allen, and Ed Hartnett – for a total of 9 PHS members, who have pledged $1,000 per year to The Foundation. Gene Allen, Foundation Chair, is to be commended for his outstanding contributions to our club and The Rotary Foundation!

For the 2nd time, South Brunswick Island Rotarians joined with Rotarians from the Shallotte and Leland Clubs in 3 cooperative efforts. The 1st was a District Simplified Grant for an electrocardiogram machine at The New Hope Clinic. Nothing says Rotary like Rotarians from 3 clubs providing life saving hope to the needy families of our county. The 2nd multi-club program was the sponsorship of the Girls on the Run/Stride race held on Ocean Isle Beach and in Shallotte in the Spring and Fall. Clubs not only financially supported this event but came out on 2 Saturday morning to race and provide volunteer support. And in the 3rd we jointly sponsored a Media Membership Campaign where “ordinary people do extraordinary things”.

SBI’s Club Leadership Plan provides for Continuity in our Board of Directors as each commits to a 3 year term on the board. Our thanks go to each of the Board members for this Rotary year. Many have served for multiple years in their roles yet their commitment to our Club is unwavering. Pat Olsen, Vince Juric, and Gene Allen are leaving our SBI Board next year. Thank you for helping to make this year such an outstanding experience and for the growth we have accomplished. We are gaining Bill Raphael, Michael Abushakra, and Randy Thompson as their replacements. Our Presidents, Jen Vanasse, Mark McKeithan, and Tom Adams, will enjoy their dedicated support.

On a District level, we have 4 Rotarians serving-will serve in key leadership positions. Bob Stinson as ADG for Area 4. John Mohr serves as The Foundation’s Annual Programs Chair. Denny Jordan preceded John. Lin Kelly serves as Communications Chair. Next year Gene Allen will be Area 4 Foundation Advocate. SBI’s leadership further affirms our commitment and dedication to the Mission of Rotary. And our mission of “enriching the lives of the Kids of Brunswick County.

Our 2012-2013 Rotary International President, Sakuji Tanaka’s theme for this year was “Peace through Service”. He asked that we dedicate ourselves to enriching the lives of people worldwide via food and water, literacy, and disease prevention. Thereby we enhance peace and understanding worldwide therein enriching the lives of millions of our world citizens – and bringing people together. I believe that we have.

My thanks to each of you for allowing me to serve as SBI’s President this year but more importantly, for allowing me to serve beside you as we developed a masterful picture of “Service above Self”. Indeed, we’ve made a significant difference to our local Brunswick and International communities. We have truly “walked the talk” of “Service Above Self”. Yours in Rotary Service,

Dan Lynes Dan Lynes President 2012-2013

CLUB HISTORY

For a long time, Alex Mearns had sensed the need for a service club or organization to connect the numerous small townships and the business and professional people in the South Brunswick Islands area. Rotary International seemed to be the right choice. Thus, in 1985 Alex contacted the Wilmington Rotary Club President for advice about starting a new club. During the course of two years (1985-1987) Alex met with Gene Merritt and Herman Blizzard of the Wilmington Rotary Club to discuss the possibilities. A survey was conducted. A list of approximately 30 prospective members was generated including Rotarians residing in the area. A current Rotarian was appointed to be the first club president. The name of the club and a club charter was received in December 1987. A charter night celebration and officer induction was held on February 19, 1988, at the Sea Trail Clubhouse in Sunset Beach. The SBI Rotary Club Administration Committee had some changes mid-year and still guided our club to record levels of funds raised. I am very proud of the work all club members do in order to make our club a strong and successful club. • September, 2012- Kick off for Fall Raffle Fundraiser chaired by Mark McKeithan. Members

sold tickets for $50 with a drawing in December for a jackpot of $5,000. This was a successful event and our club netted $10,000 from our efforts. It was very exciting to give a check for $5,000 to the winner. The best part was a Rotarian from our club purchased some tickets for his employees and one of those employees won the jackpot. What a great surprise.

• December 7th , 2012- The Annual Rotary Club Christmas Party. This was an evening of

great social time and fellowship followed by an excellent dinner and a short program. We enjoyed music throughout the evening by a trio from The Brunswick Big Band. Once again The Thistle hosted our group and it was fabulous.

• April 13th, 2013- Spring Social at Tom and Dr. Suzanne Adams home on Ocean Isle Beach.

We had about 50 people who enjoyed perfect weather and great fellowship. Food was excellent as Dr. Greg Rupp once again managed the grill for burgers and hot dogs. We had many other items including awesome desserts brought by many of our members and their spouses.

• Saturday, May 18th, 2013- Fore KIDZ! Annual Golf Tournament. Tiger’s Eye at Ocean

Ridge was full of golfers and volunteers on this warm and sunny day. We had a great turnout for golf as we sold out all teams. We also had a record net result in money raised for our club’s various charities. Chaired by Mark McKeithan, along with Dan Lynes, Brenda Testerman, Currie Batchelor, Denny Jordan, Tom Adams and our whole club as volunteers on this day, the net results was a record of over $26,000 to our club’s charity account.

• Friday, June 28th, 2013- The Annual Installation Banquet at The Thistle. The passing of the

gavel from President Dan Lynes to incoming President Jennifer Vanasse for Rotary Year 2013-14. This evening is a reflection from Dan Lynes and then a forward look from Jennifer of her goals for our new Rotary Year. All incoming board members are introduced and officially sworn in as officers. The excitement starts for a new Rotary Year full of fun, hard work and great results helping the kids of Brunswick County.

Respectfully submitted, Mark McKeithan Chair

FOUNDATION COMMITTEE

• Club Foundation goals have been met and, in most cases, exceeded. Foundation contributions have continued to grow. In 2009-10 our per capita giving for the Annual Fund was $141. It increased to $205.26 in 2010-11, $207.74 in 2011-12 and this year is $266.40. We have exceeded our Annual Fund goal of $12,600 again. In addition, our club contributed $2,729 to Polio Plus for a total contribution to the Foundation of $21,377. 72 members are Sustaining Members for a percentage of 100%. The number of club members who were Paul Harris Fellows reached 90% during November 2012 (Foundation Month). Membership changes caused the number to drop slightly to 88% by year’s end.

• Denny Jordan became the first Major Donor of the SBI. Dan & Linda Lynes became Beneficiaries this year. New Paul Harris Society members are Tom Adams, Ed Hartnett and Gene Allen. We recognized 8 first time Paul Harris Fellows that were club members! They are: Tom Adams (also PHF+1), Joe Godfrey, Lisa Glass, Ed Hartnett, Dennis Winters, John Henson, Tony Carico and Currie Batchelor. In addition, our members presented PHFs to others: Millie Venegas (Dan Lynes), Cynthia Huddleston (John), Kelly H. Wheeler (Jen Vanasse) and Dr. Susanne Adams (Tom). The club also recognized eleven multiple Paul Harris Fellows including Tom and Denny. The others are John Huddleston (PHF+1), Dan Lynes (PHF+5), Randy Thompson (PHF+4), Gary Staley (PHF+1), John Mohr (PHF+5), Gene Allen (PHF+3), Chris Holloway (PHF+2), Karim Mawji (PHF+1) and Jen Vanasse (PHF+3). Our club had well over twenty PHF recipients this year!

• Our major Foundation project involved joining with the Leland, Shallotte and Southport clubs to fund a matching grant from the Rotary Foundation for a state-of-the-art EKG machine at the New Hope Clinic to provide an additional medical service to Brunswick County citizens who could not afford the service. Dan Lynes, SBI president, wrote the grant and Gene Allen, SBI Foundation Chair, headed the project. It was a success and brought our clubs closer together.

• Attendance at both the Foundation Seminar and the Foundation Banquet was outstanding. We had seven members attend the Foundation Seminar and eleven members and five spouses attend the Foundation Banquet. Sheila Roberts, Director of New Hope Clinic, attended the banquet as our guest. Our club received numerous Foundation awards.

• On April 5 and 6, Gene Allen, Dan Lynes, ADG Bob Stinson and Jen Vanasse, attended the first Peace Seminar hosted by District 7730 in Chapel Hill. Lynes, Stinson and Allen stayed for the 10th Anniversary Conference of the Duke-UNC Rotary Center for International Studies. It was special to hear all of the scholars present, but an exciting moment came for us when Daniel Auguste spoke. Daniel was sponsored as a Peace Scholar by our club two years ago. Chair Allen also represented the Foundation at the Rotary District Conference in Wilmington.

• President Dan Lynes, ADG Bob Stinson and Foundation Chair Gene Allen attended a reception hosted by the Leland Rotary Club that was held in Southport to meet and honor the visiting GSE team from England and Wales. Grace Rollason, Steve Davies, Sarah Salter, Ben Mottram and Hannah Stocks made up the team. The visit was significant since the GSE format will exist no longer after this visit.

• Our club was a part of the Polio Plus effort by the Rotary Foundation. We contributed as a club, individually and through our Water Bottle Project. Our Water Bottle Project netted approximately $350. Only 218 cases of wild polio virus were reported in 2012, a reduction of over 60% compared to 2011! We are almost there!

• Thank you for your contributions to The Rotary Foundation. You are making a difference for children and adults in Brunswick County, our state and the world!

Respectfully submitted, Gene Allen

Chair

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE

• SBI Rotary had a good year with the addition of 9 new members. The followingare new members for the 2012-2013 year; Currie Batchelor, Melissa Byrd, Tony Carico, Jay Hill, Kathleen MacDonald, Jesse McCrery, Brenda Testerman, David Stuart and David Vanasse. This is a very dynamic and energetic group that is very involved with the club given the short time they have been members. Our club is in good hands with this fine group. They have stepped up and delivered!

• This next year the Membership committee has its work cut out for it in trying to duplicate and improve on such good results. We plan on doing 3 membership dinners at Greg Rupp’s office as we have done in past years. This has been a very successful venue for recruiting new members. Our goal for 2013-14 will be 12 new members. In addition we will be doing an in depth “Welcome to Rotary” meeting that will follow approximately 6 weeks after the dinners. This will be both an orientation and an in depth information meeting discussing all aspects of Rotary at the local club level as well as Rotary’s role internationally.

• Broadening our classification areas will be a priority this next year. We will be assessing the club’s current classifications and comparing it to the vocations that we have in Brunswick County and soliciting prospective members to broaden vocational classifications in our club.

• Another area that the membership committee will be working on is a mentoring program for new members. They will be paired with an existing member different from their sponsor. This will be done to more quickly get new members integrated and active in club activities.

• As always, the membership committee relies on ALL members of SBI Rotary to solicit quality business persons who will contribute to making our Club and County and Rotary International the best it can be.

Respectfully submitted,

Greg Rupp

Chair

PUBLIC RELATIONS COMMITTEE

• This was another busy year for the Public Relations Committee. We had twenty-nine

programs that were Rotary-related – new member inductions, presentation of Paul Harris Fellow and other honors, Interact and RYLA presentations as well as some memorable classification talks from our members. We also had sixteen outside speakers present on several interesting topics such as the state’s tourism industry, the growth of severe memory problems in our aging population, the need for schools for orphaned children in India among other topics. Three of our members shared some of their expertise with us as well. Jack Alexander gave an impressive presentation on the nation’s fiscal crisis, Denny Jordan spoke about the role of the county planning board and James Payne shared information on the state’s Castle Doctrine.

• In addition to bringing programs to the club each week, the committee also sent over 35

press releases and photos to area newspapers. Many of those same stories were put on our website to help promote the programs and activities of South Brunswick Islands Rotary Club.

• This year we also offered SBI Rotary golf shirts to our membership at a special low

price. The light blue color does not stand out as well as the tangerine Fore Kidz golf shirts, but they are comfortable and easy to care for!

• Our club also spearheaded an advertising campaign to raise awareness of Rotary in our

community. John Mohr handled the grant application and acted as a liaison with the Shallotte, Leland and Southport clubs. Suzy King took the pictures and created the ads. The campaign ran in The Brunswick Beacon, on our website and also on the district’s website.

• Public Relations is a team effort and we thank all of you for your contributions over the

past year. A special “Thank You” to Lin Kelly for her role in creating our weekly bulletin, Wheels in Motion, and to Bill Raphael who was our photographer every Friday morning. They are both dedicated team members and without their help we could not have accomplished what we did this year.

• Girls on the Run, Girls on the Track, & Stride – non- profit prevention programs coordinated through the Wilmington Family YMCA that encourage preteen and teens to develop self-respect and lifestyles through running. The curriculum addresses all aspects of development - their physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual well-being. While the programs are provided at a number of our county schools, several of our club members are involved specifically with the programs at Jessie Mae Monroe Elementary, Union Elementary, and Shallotte Middle. Each fall and spring program comes to an end with the running of a 5K race. SBI again joined with the Leland and Shallotte Rotary Clubs as well as Naber Dodge to bring the Girls on the Run/ Stride Race to Brunswick County. Presenting the bi-annual 5K race is a multi-year collaborative effort that showcases the youths 10 week training and is open to the public for participation as a way of building program awareness and raising funds to support the program. Thanks to Jen Vanasse, who served as the Rotary Liason to the Wilmington Family YMCA and the race volunteer coordinator for both spring/ fall race. Special thanks to Glenn Humbert, David Vanasse, Bill Raphael, and Vince Juric for coaching the Stride programs at Union Elementary and Jessie Mae Monroe Elementary Schools and all of our day-of race volunteers.

• Rotary Against Drugs Speech Contest – Speech contest in which interested students prepared a 6 minute speech on the prevention of drug and alcohol abuse in the US. They competed first locally; advanced to a district competition; and then to our state competition. The objectives of the contest are to have students to:

• Consider the nature and seriousness of drug and alcohol abuse;

• Learn of current efforts to reduce drug and alcohol abuse;

• Discover what might be done in their communities to reduce drug and alcohol abuse;

• Volunteer to serve as mentors and role models to middle and elementary students;

• Listen and practice expressing their ideas in an appropriate and convincing manner to peers;

• Increase their concern for fellow students, gain self-confidence, and improve self-esteem.

• Each contestant is evaluated on delivery, originality, and content. Cash Awards are presented at all levels of competition. We had 3 students win locally. Allison Brown advanced to both the District and State level competitions.
