2010 Annual Report

Page 2: ANNUAL REPORT 2010.pdf

Harford Habitat for Humanity, just like every Habitat home, is built on a strong foundation. During fiscal year 2010, we built, rehabbed and repaired homes, while laying the groundwork within our organization for a year of significant growth. That meant building six homes, repairing more than 25, restructuring our organization, acquiring ten building lots for the next fiscal year, and raising more money than ever during an economic downturn. A tall order indeed, but with God as our guiding light and a community of generous and loving people, we were able to accomplish our home building and repair goals and prepare for a phenomenal year of growth.

It is clear to all of us at Harford Habitat that the homes we build are more than just a place to live. They are a symbol of the trust, hope, love, and respect we build with our families, volunteers, donors and community partners. The critical home repairs we make remind us that we are all in need of restoration. By putting faith into action, we truly show the love of Christ to others. Yes, because of you, we are building more than houses and our foundation is strong. Thank you.

-- Joann Blewett, Executive Director

“As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock.”

from the Board President . . . Harford Habitat for Humanity is making life changes for deserving families every day. I am in awe of the generosity of our contributors, the dedication of the staff, the commitment of the board, and the hard work and appreciation exhibited by all members of our partner families. We are building affordable homes and providing extensive household repairs, but the bricks and mortar do not tell the full story.

In spite of a down turn in the economy, vendors, donors, and volunteers who contribute to our home building and repair efforts, have not wavered in their resolve. In fact, together this year, we served more families than ever since our inception. Solid partnerships have been formed and communities have begun to take shape as a result of our work.

Our supporters experience a tremendous sense of fulfillment because they see firsthand the work we are doing in the community. Thank you for doing your part to help make life changes for the hard working families we serve.

Construction HighlightsNew Homes . . . Harford Habitat homes are simple, decent and affordable. Our homes are large enough to meet a family’s needs but small enough to keep construction and maintenance costs low. HHH uses quality building materials and all homes are Energy Star qualified. Through volunteer support, efficient building methods and no-interest loans, Habitat homes are affordable for Harford County families in need.

. . . from a VolunteerWhat first drew me to Harford Habitat for Humanity was the opportunity to help raise money for an organization whose goals were, quite literally, concrete. The immediate gratification of watching walls go up and the roof being placed, gave me a sense that I was truly helping to make a difference in the life of the partner family who would now call this house a home.

As my involvement in Habitat grew, so did my understanding of what that home truly represented. When the foundation of a Habitat house is poured, it represents so much more than a place to begin to build a home. It is the foundation of a whole new life, where a family can live securely, knowing that they are building a better life for themselves and their children. Yet that foundation goes beyond the perimeters of the house itself, for it is the beginning of a new community that exists with a new pride of place. When you are treated with dignity and respect, when you are truly a part of the process of building your home, and your new life, that sense of belonging radiates outward, to extend to your street, and your neighborhood, and your town.

I have been wonderfully touched by my participation with Harford Habitat for Humanity. Experiencing the joy and the hope of the partner families has been truly fulfilling. What Habitat builds is not simply a house, or even a home. What Habitat builds goes beyond security or community. Whether we swing a hammer, partner with families, or raise money, what we are truly building is grace, grace that touches everyone who has had a role in creating such a strong foundation.

“As we moved through the requirements to complete the Habitat program, we gained a wealth of knowledge and experience to become more educated, disciplined homeowners. We met a number of wonderful individuals who were more than willing to help us balance our check book, organize our finances, and learn the tricks of saving money. Working on site was simply amazing; never could we have imagined the dedication that the youth and adults who helped build our house would have in making this dream come true. We went on site as strangers and left family.”

Harford Habitat for Humanity • 2010 ANNUAL REPORT

Page 8: ANNUAL REPORT 2010.pdf

Harford Habitat for Humanity, Inc. is a nonprofit Christian housing ministry.

Lester’s Story. . .After finishing school in 2003, I decided to start working on some of my goals. I told my parents I wanted to stay on the same job I worked while in school because I was happy with the company. Well, that meant I have reached goal number one, a job I enjoyed. Next we talked about me moving into an apartment. Here we go again, I have reached another goal, number 2.

Now I have been working for 9 years and living in my apartment for 6 years, but things are not working out at the apartment. There have been many maintenance issues so it’s time to reach another goal which has always been important to me. I want A Home I Can Call My Own.

Ms. Sue Rattman from the Arc Northern Chesapeake Region (Self Directed Supports), Dave Hasbury (Neighbours Inc), family, friends and myself had a PATH meeting.

During the Path meeting I explained what kind of house and neighborhood I wanted. Mr. Dave drew my PATH on paper and it hangs on my wall so whenever I look at it I will stay focused.

We later had a meeting with Mr. Joe Wykowski and that was one of the times we were informed of Habitat. We went to Home Partnership Inc., there we met Ms. Kim Cowie, who explained more to us about Habitat. Ms. Cowie also went over my finances and informed me I would qualify for a Habitat House. Well, I was approved by Habitat’s Board of Directors and great things started happening for me.

Harford Habitat for Humanity employees, volunteers, and partner families have become an extension of my family. Doing the sweat equity was a chore in the beginning, but the people I have been working with are all caring and fun so it became enjoyable.

On September 24, 2010, I reached goal number 3, A Home Of My Own! Thanks to God, Family, Friends, and Habitat I Have a Home! I am now praying for the day when I will be able to share my home with my wife and our children. (Goal number 4). It will happen when God says it is time.

Thank you, Lester Harriswww.harfordhabitat.org

PartnerFamily HighlightsHarford Habitat Partner families are selected based on their level of need, willingness to partner with HHH, and the ability to repay a no-profit, zero interest loan. Habitat is not a giveaway program. In addition to a down payment and monthly mortgage payment, partner families invest up to 500 hours of their own labor—sweat equity—into building their Habitat homes and the homes of others.

1540Sweat Equity Hours

were contributed by our partner families while

building their home and the homes of others.

2010 ANNUAL REPORT • Harford Habitat for Humanity

Over the years, Harford Habitat for Humanity and The ARC Northern Chesapeake Region have shared a similar vision. The ARC Northern Chesapeake Regions helps people with developmental disabilities build better lives. Our partnership has grown even stronger as Harford Habitat was able to help one of the ARC’s clients, Lester Harris, realize his dream of homeownership. The following is

138 Hourswere spent in

homeownership classes by our partner families.

As part of their sweat equity requirement, our families attended classes such as Budgeting,

Finding Hidden Cash, Healthy Credit Habitats and Home Maintenance to name a few.
