Introduction from the Director: Alan Rivett
Rekindling and revitalisation of the spirit of the organisation;
reasserting our mission and raison d’etre, was perhaps the theme
running throughout the 2010/2011 year. This was nowhere more
perfectly illustrated than in May 2011 when a small dedication
ceremony took place in our now much sought after new creative
studio. The dedication of this space, built in 2009, was to the memory
of Helen Martin, a founding donor to the University, without whose
generosity Warwick Arts Centre, as we know it today, may well not
have existed. Helen Martin was a true patron of the arts, believing in
their enduring and transformative power to change lives. In this spirit,
alongside presenting one of the most notable artistic programmes in
the UK today, our staff and our principal stakeholders came together
during the year to continue the work and plan the future development
of Warwick Arts Centre.
“The Tempest was the best theatrical performance I have ever seen! Hilarious, clever and simply breathtaking! The cast consists of highly prominent Russian actors as well as young and highly talented stars! Amazing!” Margarita, Mar 11

“Simply awesome gig - opening with the fabulous Portico Quartet and then topped by the beautiful sounds and performance from the Penguin Cafe.” Simon, Feb 11
Our artistic programme,
contemporary in feel and
international in scope, was
appreciated by the many
thousands of people that
make up our audience.
It is dangerous to make
superlative claims of the
organisation one leads, but
one ten day period in our
programme in October 2010
stands out. It’s a programme
that is not only distinctive, but
the breadth and quality is not
likely to be experienced in any
single venue anywhere else
in the UK. Over this period
audiences could experience
the joyous playing of the
Philharmonia Orchestra,
led by Vladimir Ashkenazy; a
new theatre commission by
Stan’s Cafe; the irrepressible
darlings of contemporary
performance Forced
Entertainment playing to full
houses in our theatre; the
wit of ironic king of comedy
Stewart Lee; a concert by
Michael Nyman; experiencing
the controversial hit of
Edinburgh Fringe 2010, Tim
Crouch’s The Author; and,
to conclude, the Metropolitan
Opera’s Boris Godunov
screened live from New York
in our cinema.
In November 2010 Arts
Council England awarded
Warwick Arts Centre £1.36m
to support a transformative
process of programme,
organisational and business
development. This was one of
only five such awards to arts
organisations in England. The
Arts Centre team have been
energised and excited by the
potential this award brings
as it allows us to revitalise
and focus on the Warwick
Arts Centre of the future,
providing some solutions to
the challenges facing many
arts organisations today. In
addition, in early 2011 we
were successful in achieving
Arts Council England National
Portfolio Organisation status.
This process, while providing
indications of financial
security for the next three
years, constitutes an 11%
reduction in Arts Council
funding for the period which
will, I’m sure, be a challenge
over the next three years.

“Nothing like good theatre to lift the blues: Kneehigh’s Hansel & Gretel @warwickarts was just what I needed today.” Char, Dec 10
“This is an incredible show, one of the top three best productions I have ever seen (and I’m a Drama Teacher so I see a lot). Don’t miss the chance to see it - I’ll be coming again and bringing a party of my students.” Kerry Greenwood on Punk Rock, Nov 10
Exceptional endeavour by our
dedicated programming team
brought many extraordinary
artists from the locality, the
nation and internationally
to present their work here
in our diverse programme.
International drama, music
and dance were evident
in abundance throughout
the year. Award-winning
drama from National Theatre
of Scotland with a return
of Black Watch for eight
performances, a stunning
production of Shakespeare’s
The Tempest by Cheek by
Jowl, the haunting work of
Lindsay Seers in the Mead
Gallery, followed by the
enigmatic photographs by
Hannah Starkey.
In summer 2011 Warwick
Arts Centre worked closely
with the Young Vic to
co-produce a new production
of Gogol’s Government
Inspector, as well as inviting
a number of artists and
companies to test new ideas
using our new Helen Martin
Studio. This is part of the
often hidden development
and commissioning work
which we are increasingly
undertaking and which
precedes any work appearing
on stage or in a gallery. I am
grateful to the artists who we
have worked closely with over
the year for their dedication,
inspiration and creativity in
this work.
Our students continued to
produce their own work in
theatre, opera and drama
over the year and tested
themselves to great acclaim
at national and international
competitions and festivals.
Our relatively new strand
of digital programming,
broadcasting high quality
performance directly into our
venues have both proved very
successful. Met Opera Live
and National Theatre Live
digital screenings have had an
impressive audience response
over a short period of time,
ensuring that we will continue
to explore further alliances in
this growing area of activity.
Finally, I must thank the
University of Warwick for
continued support, advice
and wisdom without which
Warwick Arts Centre would
not flourish, our principal
external stakeholder, Arts
Council England for its
continuing commitment
over the near future, and the
many donors and friends of
Warwick Arts Centre who
have joined us in supporting
such a wide range of artistic
and creative activity over the
year. As ever our staff have
risen to every challenge,
succeeded, and, in many
cases exceeded, sometimes
in difficult and challenging
circumstances.
Thank you!
Alan Rivett Director, Warwick Arts Centre

Fundraising AchievementsThanks to the support of individual donors and trusts and foundations, in 2010/11 we reached
our fundraising goal of £50,000 for The New Art and Young Artists Fund. This helped us on
three counts:
• With our enriching
education programme
(including The Forest, a
project working with local
schools and professional
artists to make new works of
art, and our amazing Boys
Dancing project).
• With the commissioning
of an exciting production of
Macbeth, aimed at school
children and part of our new
Triggered@Warwick project.
• With the provision of
Music Scholarships to
benefit the more talented and
dedicated Warwick students
who make up the University’s
orchestras, bands and choirs.
Thank you to all our donors for their generous support!

Cov Cool Kids
Cov Cool Kids said a big
and dynamic farewell
in March 2011 with two
huge performances in the
Butterworth Hall. With the
raked seating folded back,
around 500 children in each
performance were able to
show the work they had made
themselves to the families,
friends and VIPs who were
sitting in the balcony seats.
One performance focused on
dance and film and the other
on theatre and music. Over
the years Cov Cool Kids has
given many thousands of
children the chance to shine
leaving lasting memories
and a legacy of creative
achievement with both
children and teachers.
Boys Dancing
Boys Dancing goes from
strength to strength with
continuing funding from
Dancing for the Games (part
of the West Midlands Culture
Programme for London 2012).
Adding new local authority
partners this year meant
we could work with over 50
groups of lads making dance
for film and live performance.
Performances were given
in Warwick Arts Centre,
Stourbridge Town Hall, the
RSA Academy in Tipton,
Bishop Perowne School in
Worcester, Theatre Severn in
Shrewsbury and Wilnecote
High School in Tamworth.
Start with Theatre
Our second year of
collaboration with The
Prince’s Foundation for
Children and the Arts focused
on theatre. Over 500 infant
pupils from schools serving
areas of deprivation in
Nuneaton, Bedworth and
Chelmsley Wood visited
Warwick Arts Centre twice
to see productions of The
Elves and the Shoemaker
and We’re Going On A Bear
Hunt. Using those visits as
inspiration they worked with
theatre artists back in their
schools and made, from
scratch, new plays which they
then presented to families and
friends in their school halls.
Partners
Partners took place over
two terms, bringing together
primary age pupils from both
special and mainstream
schools. The schools were
paired and worked together
under the theme of The
Forest. In the first term they
worked with musicians to
create a forest soundscape.
In the second term they
worked with a dance artist
to choreograph and rehearse
their own new dance work
to their own music. A
performance took place to
families and peers in the
Warwick Arts Centre Studio.
We are hoping soon to
capitalise on the very positive
reaction to the project to
create Partners 2.
Education at Warwick Arts Centre
In 2010/11 the Education Team once again extended its reach to work across 8 local authorities
in the West Midlands – Coventry, Warwickshire, Solihull, Worcestershire, Sandwell, Dudley,
Shropshire and Staffordshire. We were very excited to work with new schools, youth centres,
pupil referral units and even, for the first ever time, a prison. In our projects, children and young
people have created new works of art across a large range of art forms, and we continue to
ensure that we provide new opportunities for the young to work as artists with artists to stretch
their imaginations and creative skills and share their work with families and friends. Over the
year, in 812 sessions, we made almost 45,500 contacts with over 15,500 participants.
“My son has performed in this for the past three years, he has had an excellent time and enjoyed meeting the dance tutors that come into school and the thrill of dancing at the Arts Centre is briliant, so THANK YOU to all involved.” Chezzy on The Balancing Man (Boys Dancing) May 11

Alan Rivett, Director, Warwick Arts Centre, speaking to Meg Price, Co-ordinator, Warwick Student Arts Festival
Photographer-in-ResidenceIn April 2011 Alan Ainsworth joined Warwick
Arts Centre as Photographer-in-Residence
in a year-long project documenting the life of
Warwick Arts Centre.
This project will form a fascinating archive of all that happens
at Warwick Arts Centre – it’s not just about the events on our
stages, but about the people who work here, artists arriving,
backstage technical preparations, student activity, workshops
and the people who just come in for a coffee.
