Although Nebraska has faced sizable economic challenges this past year, the silver lining is that tight budgets have encouraged businesses, government agencies and non-profits to explore more efficient and economical ways to operate. That economic environment combined with the federally mandated conversion from analog to digital technology has paved the way for NET to forge new and unique partnerships across the state.

For example, in September I joined Governor Dave Heineman, University of Nebraska President James B. Milliken, State Education Commissioner Roger Breed and Educational Service Unit Coordi-nating Council Executive Director Matt Blomstedt at the State Capitol to sign the Nebraska Virtual Education Partnership, a significant step in the plan to create a virtual state high school. NET’s role in this project is a critical one: we will manage a digital library for students and teachers, incorporating materials from the national PBS LearningMedia service, which offers access to more than 16,000 resources tied directly to national standards.

The transition from analog to digital technology makes this kind of archive possible, and many other agencies and organizations are turning to NET for assistance as well.

We currently provide streaming and archiving services for the Nebraska State Legislature, the Appellate Court, the Supreme Court and the Nebraska Department of Education. We are also developing a pilot project with Central Community College to use this capability to support distance education and have discussed a similar pilot project with Bellevue University.

We have an agreement with the Omaha World Herald to stream NSAA State High School Championships on its high school sports website, NePrepZone, to expand coverage to a broader audience.

While NET is known for its high-quality broadcast programs (you’ll see a myriad of productions listed in this annual report) we are broadening our services and impact through collaborations with new partners statewide. This is the final year of the $25 million Inspire Nebraska Campaign, and it’s clear that your personal investment in NET, along with the investment made by the State of Nebraska, will impact citizens in every corner of the state.

My sincerest thanks for your support, Rod BatesNET General Manager

nET InSPIRE nEbRASkA CAmPAIgn Co-ChAIRSThe five-year NET Inspire Nebraska Campaign has kicked into high gear for the final year of the $25 million campaign with events held in McCook, North Platte, Norfolk, Columbus and Omaha to raise awareness of the campaign‘s goals. As we enter the last year of the campaign, we are pleased to report that we are 92% of the way toward reaching our $25 million goal, with more than $23 million raised in membership and endowment gifts.

This membership and endowment support will propel NET Television and NET Radio into the future, ensuring that public broadcasting in Nebraska will thrive for decades to come. Every gift to the campaign supports the programming you love and respect – from local documentaries and series like Standing Bear’s Footsteps and Friday Live, to national favorites like Antiques Roadshow and A Prairie Home Companion.

The bottom line is that we aim to inspire you with every single program we produce and air here in Nebraska, and while that is an ambitious goal, it is possible with your support. The degree with which we are able to inspire millions of Nebraskans depends on the private support we receive from you.

In 2012 we will concentrate on finishing out the campaign efforts in Omaha. With NET’s largest share of viewers residing in eastern Nebraska, Omaha is a particularly important part of the campaign’s success. We are confident that supporters in Omaha will push the Inspire Nebraska Campaign to our goal and beyond in the next year.

We are proud and honored to be part of the Inspire Nebraska Campaign with you, and we thank you for your loyal and generous support. Together, let’s Inspire Nebraska and see this through to the end.

“nebraska public broadcasting is a unifying factor for the state.”

“I’ve come to appreciate how absolutely remarkable Nebraska public broadcasting is and also what a unifying factor it is for the state,” says Bob Nefsky, an attorney with Rembolt Ludtke in Lincoln. Bob and his wife Mary enjoy Backyard Farmer, Big Red Wrap-Up, Masterpiece, Antiques Roadshow and The PBS NewsHour, as well as the classical music on NET Radio.

The Nefskys are long-time donors to NET Television and NET Radio. In addition, Rembolt Ludtke is underwriting production costs of the upcoming NET Television and Michael Forsberg documentary Great Plains: America’s Lingering Wild, due out in 2012.

Nebraska Chamber Players founder Becky Van de Bogart crisscrosses the Midwest on her frequent trips to and from Chicago, and during her time behind the wheel, she uses her cell phone to tune in to NET Radio.

“I can access a live stream of NET Radio no matter where I am,” says Becky. “I take NET Radio with me everywhere, and I love it.”

ET News gives Nebraskans a welcome alternative to the extreme viewpoints and sound-bite stories of traditional broadcast and cable media with quality,

in-depth journalism, stories that matter, a broader viewpoint and diverse perspectives that you don’t get anywhere else. More than ever, Nebraskans need news, analysis and information they can trust on television, on the radio and online. NET News offers exactly that.

6

n E T n E W S SIgnATURE SToRIES there’s More to the story While many news and media outlets barely skim the surface of a story, offering only 20-second sound bites and a cursory look at an issue, NET News spends the time necessary to explore the issues that matter to Nebraskans. This year NET News launched Signature Stories, a daily NET Radio and online feature that focuses on a single critical issue. The result is a richer, more thoughtful, more informative experience for the listener.

Self-proclaimed “news nuts” Lou and Rose Leviticus appreciate the local, national and global news coverage on both NET Radio and national PBS programs like PBS NewsHour and Washington Week. “I like programs that challenge,” says Lou, while Rose values what she calls the “intelligent programming” on NET Radio, including its Signature Stories and NPR news shows like All Things Considered and Morning Edition.

Likewise, Bob and Michelle Dudley, of Norfolk, value the consistent quality on NET Radio that keeps them listening from the morning news throughout the entire day. “What would we do without NET Radio?” asks Bob. “We have radios in the bathroom, in the laundry room, in the kitchen and in the car, and they are all tuned to NET Radio.” Lou and Rose and Bob and Michelle are just four of the nearly 90,000 NET Radio listeners who know there’s “more to the story.” And they know exactly where to find it.

Legislative Coverage that Is available and accessible …

• gavel-to-gavel live coverage on nET 2 World and live streaming from 11 state government venues, including the main legislative chamber, seven committee hearing rooms, the Nebraska Supreme Court, the Nebraska Appellate Court and the Governor’s hearing room. During the 2011 Legislative session hundreds of people a day watched their Legislature live in action online.

• LivecoverageonNET2WorldandlivestreamingoftheSpecial Legislative Session on the keystone XL Pipeline and the Nebraska Legislature’s Judiciary Committee hearing on LB48, the proposed illegal immigration bill.

• Capitol Conversations – a weekly web interview series hosted by NET NewslegislativereporterFredKnapp.

Did You Know? More than 42,000 requests were made to stream live legislative coverage during the 90-day 2011 session, totally more than 1,800,000 streamed minutes from NET's website.

Did You Know? NOVA: Secrets Beneath the Ice received more praise than any other feature in the 13 years Elaine Hood has worked as a communications specialist for the United States Antarctic Program. “One hundred percent of the feedback I heard was, ‘That was the best I’ve ever seen,‘” says Hood.

Did You Know? Algae can be refined into gas, diesel or jet fuel. The NET-produced segment in a recent episode of Planet Forward profiled a San Diego company that has created a new alternative to fossil fuels by growing and refining pond algae.

the Legacy of Jack G. McBride

NET surely wouldn’t be the statewide broadcasting network it is today without the vision and leadership of founding General Manager Jack McBride. More than 150 well-wishers, including Nebraska officials, NET staff and friends and family of the late McBride gathered at NET’s Lincoln headquarters in September to rededicate the building in his name.

Longtime friend of Jack, Senior Advisor Ron Hull, and NET General Manager Rod Bates unveiled the new sign.

“I know my father would be humbled,” said McBride’s daughter Julie Olsen. “And he would want to redirect the attention to where it belongs, because he knew that a building is not a monument to one individual.”

ET reaches all kinds of learners – from

preschoolers who watch PBS Kids to college students who reap hands-on experience through NET‘s internship program to the lifelong learners who participate in our workshops. We partner with organizations and agencies statewide to extend the impact of our broadcast services – and we just love to meet our viewers and listeners face-to-face.
