Report from CEO & Board Chairperson 2009-2010

On September 22, 2009, members of the Landis Homes community gathered for a “Plowing in Hope” Service of Blessing, which included

a groundbreaking service for the new South Campus Hybrid and Cottage Homes.

At the Service of Blessing, Dr Richard Weaver shared a meditation on “Spirituality and Creation Care,” followed by Ruth Weaver leading a meaningful litany of blessing. Architect Gregg Scott spoke about the advantages of the new Hybrid Homes in joining many benefits of cottage homes with some benefits of apartment living, resulting in a hybrid home – the best of both.

Richard encouraged the Landis Homes community to participate with God in being good stewards of creation. He offered six suggestions:

1. Simplify our lifestyles to use less water and work to save water from runoff by our storm water management and wetlands restoration, and thereby help bring healing to God's good world.

2. Reduce our energy consumption for heating and cooling and energy efficient appliances, and thereby help to be good stewards of God's many gifts to us.

3. Reduce the waste which we send to unsightly holes in the ground, and thereby show that we care about the created order which God loves and pronounced good and thereby participate with God in redemption of creation.

4. Compassionately care for each other in these buildings and outside, and thereby witness to the reign of God which has already come and will come in fullness with Christ's return.

5. In the architecture of our buildings and in our landscaping, seek to capture something of beauty and harmony, and thereby participate with God in restoring the earth to the beautiful place it was and of course still is. We all hunger for beauty because that is part of who God is.

6. Give of our means to help others in our world to find life in Christ and in nourishing food, and thereby we help to make it known that it is God's will for all his children to flourish.

Richard concluded that, “our hope is in God who will redeem our good intentions and our feeble efforts to ‘redd’ up the world. Whatever we do for the glory of God is ‘not in vain’ Paul says to the Corinthians.”

As we reflect over the past year, we are grateful for the team effort of many to bring honor and glory to God through this time of growth of our community at Landis Homes, and re-commit ourselves to continue this journey into the future.

With much gratitude,

John W. Eby Larry J. Zook Board Chairperson President/CEO

Neighborhood Barn Fire Brings Opportunity In September 2009, the barn on an Amish farm, located right down the road from Landis Homes, burned to the ground due to a welding incident. Resident Ken Espenshade, stopped by the farm the day following the fire to offer his condolences and started to wonder how Landis Homes might get involved. So with the blessing of management team, Ken along with dining manager Jeff Deibler delivered a hot meal for the 60-100 Amish volunteer builders.

We are deeply grateful to our Friends of the Towel & Basin who contributed to furthering Christ-like care at Landis Homes. A majority of donors helped support residents who can no longer pay for the full cost of services they need through donations to the Caring and Caring Endowment Funds. Other donors gave donations to provide financial aid to clients in Adult Day Services, to buy medical equipment, and to enrich the services to persons with memory loss. We apologize for any misspellings or omissions from the list. Please contact us with your corrections.

Residential Living ExpandsIn the past year the new cottage and hybrid homes went from breaking ground to moving in. This new area brings with it new ways of building, and new ways of operating with a commitment to land use and protecting the natural environment.

The new homes:

• preserve open spaces, reduce surface parking, and return the original campus pond to a more sustainable condition

• use building practices to reduce energy use and increase healthful use of the natural resources including: geothermal heating and cooling, rain-water harvesting and air quality control

• incorporate better insulating practices and products with components that use less energy

• received recognition from national architectural and aging organizations for innovative design in the green building category

• are on track to receive a silver LEED (Leadership in energy & Environmental Design) rating for green building practices.

Ways to Give Gifts of Cash

This can be as simple as writing a check to Landis Homes and mailing it to the Gift Planning Services at Landis Homes, 1001 East Oregon Rd. Lititz, PA 17543

Giving Online

Authorize a charge on a credit card by visiting our web site at www.landishomes.org and follow the link to Make a Gift.

Charitable Bequest

A gift by Will to Landis Homes is a tax free distribution of the estate. It can represent a percentage of the estate, same share as each child or other representation. The gift can be designated for a particular fund or it can be unrestricted.

Charitable Gift Annuity

A Landis Homes gift annuity is a simple contractual agreement between a donor and Landis Homes in which assets are given in exchange for payments for life. It includes valuable tax benefits.

Life Insurance

A policy can be donated outright or the donor can name Landis Homes as the beneficiary of the policy. Either way there is a tax deduction for the giver.

IRA Distributions

The law providing for an outright charitable gift of IRA funds expired on December 31, 2009. Congress is considering an extension of this gift provision but has not yet acted to make it law for the 2010 tax year.

Charitable Remainder Trusts

Appreciated assets like real estate or securities can be turned into a cash gift without losing much of the gain to taxes. The gift asset is transferred to the trust and the trust sells the asset. Donors receive a tax deduction and receive income for life based on an agreed-upon rate.

Charitable Lead Trust

This is a unique tool that allows one to use an income producing asset to pay interest to Landis Homes first. It saves taxes and allows the donor to retain the asset principal or pass it on to heirs after a designated period of time.

Going Green with a Good NeighborIn June 2010 Landis Homes hosted a breakfast for members of the Hurst Family who own and run Oregon Dairy to express appreciation for being a “Good Neighbor,” both as a supplier of the campus General Store and as a store destination for residents.

Oregon Dairy Organics and Landis Homes are partnering in a new project for composting kitchen waste into compost.

Pictured is President/CEO of Landis Homes Larry Zook presenting a plaque of appreciation to the four brothers of the Hurst Family: Curvin, Willie, Victor and George Hurst.

• Using golf carts as campus transport whenever possible; more efficient and less polluting than gasoline engines

• Grounds team chipping tree waste for use as mulch

• Participating in a demand response energy program placing the campus in a volunteer brown out status and dropping the electricity load dramatically

• Converting lighting fixtures to be more energy efficient

• Installing a Building Automation System which allows large scale manipulation of energy-hungry HVAC systems; more emphasis being placed on balancing systems and adhering to more strict schedules for energy savings

• Selecting environmentally safe and natural cleaning and disinfecting products

• Choosing disposable toweling purchased in bulk rolls that cut down on amounts used as well as unnecessary packaging

• Selecting a more efficient micro fiber mopping system that cuts down on cleaning chemicals and water use

• Launched a more extensive recycling program, which includes clean paper recycling

• Using a non-aerosol 100% natural air freshener and using less of all aerosol products.
