welcome to adoptions togetherA Message from the Founder and Executive Director

Adoptions Together believes that human connection and family are the lifeblood of one’s self and the foundation of a strong society. Since 1990, we have touched the lives of more than 15,000 children and families, while embracing this philosophy: Family is about connection that creates safety, security and well being; it is lifelong and something all children need and deserve. Adoptions Together prides itself on building family connections through kinship, adoption, permanent connections, and birth; and keeping ALL families whole and healthy.

Looking back, 2010 was a phenomenal year of expansion and growth. After reviewing our history, we set our goals; strategically developing action steps to inspire innovation, develop new partnerships, deepen our impact and demonstrate to all that Adoptions Together is effecting positive change.

Looking forward, Adoptions Together is aggressively pursuing those goals. While we continue building families and keeping them strong, we are confronting the daunting challenge of preventing youth from aging out of foster care without families and becoming homeless and alone, while simultaneously strengthening our key programs in all the areas we serve.

I invite you to learn more about how you can join us in helping every child, every family, every step of the way. Read this report, visit our website and become our partner. With your support we can leverage change for children and families who need us throughout the region.

Sincerely,

Janice Goldwater Founder, Executive Director and Dedicated Investor

In 21 years, no child has ever been turned away from Adoptions Together.

7 ADOPTIONS TOGETHER 2010 ANNUAL REPORT | EVERY CHILD. EVERY FAMILY. EVERY STEP OF THE WAY.

My adoption journey began as a volunteer with at-risk youth. I felt a strong connection to the children I was working with and I wanted to do more. One question from the director of the program I was volunteering with changed my life forever: “Have you ever thought of adopting?”

Once I set my heart on adoption, I knew that keeping siblings together was something I wanted. I contacted the AdoptionWorks program at Adoptions Together for foster-care adoption. After an intensive training process, I found out that there was a sibling pair that were destined to be my children. The best news I heard after meeting and working with these kids was “You are going to be their mother.”

Of course, it didn’t stop there. I knew that my children had experienced very difficult lives. I knew it would take a great deal of effort, but I knew Adoptions Together would help my family to build our lives in a healthy way.

Now, looking back, I find we are the family I had dreamed of. For all of the parents-to-be, when you dream about a family, consider foster care adoption. I urge you to get to know the children that are waiting for a parent just like you.

You have to be honest with yourself and what you think you’re capable of doing. Once you’ve figured that out, your children will find you.

real connectionsAdoptions Together Creates Permanent Bonds

Adoptions Together believes no child should be forgotten, including the thousands of teens waiting in foster care in our region. We are partnering with DC’s Child and Family Service Agency and the Baltimore City Department of Social Services to thoroughly investigate each child’s past, searching for positive connections to people who have impacted their lives in a healthy way. At the same time, we are looking for families to provide the love and stability these children have rarely experienced.

Our mission is to reach the forgotten children, at any age, and find that one person who will hold them close, and keep them from disappearing into the margins of society forever.

Andrea loved DeShaun from the minute he got to her house.

real storiesfrom an adopting parent

But it takes more than love to adopt, she says. “I had to put aside my emotions and make sure I could provide all the support systems that he would need in order to be successful.”

Since DeShaun received services from the Permanency Opportunities Project, Monica Testa, a permanency specialist was assigned to the case.

“Monica told me about all the resources. I just gravitated toward her because I could trust her,” says Andrea.

In one short year, DeShaun has gone from needing a full-time aide to excelling in his classes and reading above grade level. “When he felt secure in Andrea’s home, all the anxiety that was getting in his way just disappeared,” says Monica. Andrea’s influence on DeShaun is inspiring. Monica says, “Watching how she interacts with DeShaun, providing consistent, loving, firm support – he can just thrive.”

“I don’t know if I’m helping DeShaun as much as he’s helped me,” says Andrea. “He has me laughing all the time!”

real impactAdoptions Together Strengthens Society—One Family at a Time

Adoptions Together’s work is family-focused and family-driven. Through our Parent Advocate Project (PAP) in DC, we work with parents at risk of separation from their children and those working toward reunification.

PAP parents are often faced with serious barriers—finding housing, overcoming substance abuse and gaining stable employment. PAP provides parents with a mentor who can support them, sharing wisdom from the mentor’s personal experience of the process. This support, coupled with education and resources, aids parents in reunifying with their children and strengthens these families so children can grow up safe, happy and healthy.

* “The AFCARS Report– Preliminary FY2010 Estimates as of June 2011 (18),” U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children & Families, Administration on Children, Youth & Families, Children’s Bureau

On September 30, 2010, there were more than 400,000 children in foster care nationwide. 80,000 children will remain dependent on foster care and face a challenging future of uncertainty and instability with no permanent connections.*

real storiesfrom a Parent Advocate Project parent

Losing my children to foster care was the hardest experience of my life. My family was having a hard time and the court ordered me to complete a domestic violence assessment, attend individual therapy and enroll in parenting classes. I also needed help for my son’s special needs. I tried to do it on my own but I was overwhelmed.

When I found Adoptions Together, I didn’t know what the Parent Advocate Project was. The flyer I found said that they put you together with other parents who have experience going through CFSA. I called and was assigned a mentor.

Having a mentor that has actually been through everything that you have to go through is so helpful. She didn’t get her knowledge out of a book, and real life experience to me counts even more. When my mentor told me she understood, I knew she actually did. Right away, she helped me simply by listening and coaching me. She came to court with me and called me to see how I was doing. She helped me to achieve the goals needed to put my family back together again. We are back together now and doing well.

real familiesAdoptions Together Fosters Transformative Change Through Education and Support

Raising a child can be one of life’s most challenging adventures yet one of the most rewarding experiences. Adoptions Together recognizes that raising a happy, healthy child requires preparation and continual support. The therapeutic services at Adoptions Together’s Post Permanency Family Center provide such support and the center is a trusted place for newly formed families to solidify familial bonds, discover resources and find respite.

As well as providing direct services to families, Adoptions Together offers educational opportunities through innovative workshops, training and conferences for child-welfare professionals and the broader community. Together with other child-welfare activists, Adoptions Together uses its voice to advocate for systemic change that creates a society where every child grows up in a safe, stable and healthy home.

* “The AFCARS Report– Preliminary FY2010 Estimates as of June 2011 (18),” U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children & Families, Administration on Children, Youth & Families, Children’s Bureau

Of the 53,000 foster-care children who were adopted in 2010, 15% were adopted by non-relatives, 53% by their foster parent(s) and 32% by other relatives including step-parent. These children have achieved permanency, building their emotional, economic and academic success for the future.*

real storiesfrom an AdoptionWorks parentThey were five and three and I was their fifth home. Their young lives were already plagued with addiction, neglect and instability. They owned my heart but they deserved more. They needed a parent prepared, educated and supported—a parent who understood their past and how it may affect their thoughts and behaviors. Adoptions Together understands the needs of its parents and surrounds their families with support every step of the way. It is because of their commitment to building strong, healthy families I am able to proclaim with confidence: I am their parent; I am their home.

real storiesfrom a Board Member and major donor

I joined the Adoptions Together Board of Directors 17 years ago, first and foremost, because I believe that every child deserves the right opportunity in life. When I began researching agencies, I felt Adoptions Together offered the widest range of support for all aspects of adoption, from the birth family to the adoptive family--through the whole lifespan. I believe that my investments in Adoptions Together not only helps children, but also helps our society as a whole.

Having been adopted as an infant, I know the opportunities that I had. This is my way of giving back and making sure that we find homes for all children. Through my work with the Board, I can see that my investments go directly to the children and families we are serving, not to fancy offices and large salaries.

This is the work I feel good about doing, and I ask all of you to join me in making the changes I am helping to make each day.

our guiding principlesAdoptions Together Is Led By Strong Convictions

About ChildrenThe welfare of the children who need our help comes first.

Permanency in a healthy family is best for children.

Children need to maintain connections with their birth families and cultures even when they cannot be safely raised in their birth families.

About Foster CareFoster care should be used as a last resort when a child cannot safely remain in his family.

Stays in foster care should be as short as possible.

Foster care should strengthen family ties, not weaken them.

The first foster care placement should be the last foster-care placement.

About AdoptionAdoption is the best option when a child cannot be safely raised or reunified with their birth families.

Adoption is a life-long process.

Openness and honesty is healthy for children and families.

The ability to be a good adoptive parent does not depend upon wealth, race, religion, marital status, sexual preference or gender identity.

Education, support and guidance from qualified adoption professionals before, during and after placement helps adopted children and their families succeed.

About Adoptions TogetherCommitment to mission and awareness of guiding principles are necessary for every staff member.

Good financial health is required to accomplish our mission.

Continuous improvement of programs and services requires knowledgeable, experienced and creative child-welfare professionals and staff.

Racial, cultural, ethnic and religious diversity within the staff is essential for good decision-making.

Direct and honest communication is the best way to prevent and resolve conflict.
