SuperSibs! helps children redefine the “cancer sibling” experience by providing needed support services andhelping to draw out the greater and important lessons that may benefit these children later in their own lives. As part of these efforts, SuperSibs! awards a number of scholarships in recognition of sibling survivor high school seniors.

Part of the selection criteria is the ability of applicants to articulate how they have taken a devastating life experience and turned it into a positive, strength-building experience for themselves, as well as to create good in the lives of others.

Through their guided essays and creative expressions, these SuperSib applicants have provided us with valuable insight that is beneficial in helping other SuperSib children and teens heal. In addition, the scholars themselves have given us feedback that the application process is a therapeutic experience for them.

SuperSibs! continues to help promote leadership and development of these future SuperSibs! role models. Scholarship applications are posted on SuperSibs! website in November of each year.

SuperSibs! Annual GrowthSuperSibs! provided direct support to 25,112 siblings and their families.

Siblings reside across all 50 United States, 9 Canadian Provinces, Puerto Rico and Saipan.

SuperSibs! supports 1,782 teen and young siblings who are bereaved.

SuperSibs! received referrals from over 300 partner hospitals and organizations.

1,239 psychosocial and medical professionals referred siblings into SuperSibs!

www.supersibs.org received 35,060 unique visits from 117 countries and territories.

Because of their passion to help at-risk children, seven respected research scientists have met with SuperSibs! consistently since 2006 to address the need for high quality, reliable and valid research on the effects of a pediatric cancer diagnosis on the brothers and sisters of a patient.

This committed volunteer team has brought new focus on the need for quality research involving a more appropriate theoretical framework enabling accurate and sensitive assessment of sibling issues and enhancing interventions to support positive outcomes. They have also had their research findings published in journals like Psycho-Oncology Journal.

As the only national organization solely focused on sibling survivors, SuperSibs! has served over 25,000 children and their families battling pediatric cancer in the United States and Canada. We receive over 350 new sibling referrals each month from our network of over 300 pediatric hospitals and cancer organizations across the United States and Canada.

We work together with many industry leaders including LIVESTRONG Foundation, Mia Hamm Foundation, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Mayo Clinic, National Institute of Health, Johns HopkinsHospital and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

On Sunday, August 1, 2010, 43 Team SuperSibs! members from all over the United States met the challenge of walking or running the Rock ‘n’ Roll Chicago Half Marathon and making a positive difference in the lives of at-risk children. Currently, Team SuperSibs! has raised over $38,100 to support children and teens whose brother or sister has or has had cancer.

Team SuperSibs! members enjoy the camaraderie of working toward a goal with other Team members, receive help in their fundraising efforts from SuperSibs! staff members and havepersonalized marathon training to help them complete this popular lakefront half-marathon.

SuperSibs! Comfort and Care Program supports siblings by providing resources and tools to help them cope and manage through the tumultuous time of their family’s pediatric cancer fight. Our unique support materials are specially designed with input from families, oncology staff and psychosocial professionals to support children and teens whose brother or sister is currently in treatment or has survived cancer, and for those who are bereaved.

This evidence-based intervention program provides age-appropriate, customized and targeted materials that are delivered to each child/teen and their parents on a carefully developed schedule throughout the year.

Delivering the coping tools and materials to these vulnerable children at home helps to ensure barrier free support.

After receiving our targeted support, these children and teens learn coping skills, improve their socialization skills, manage their feelings of fear and isolation and understand they are not alone on this pediatric cancer journey. This type of psychosocial support helps to prevent manifestation of ongoing emotional challenges as these children mature in adulthood.

One way SuperSibs! provides support to these at-risk children and their families is by ensuring integrated sibling support is incorporated into pediatric oncology care at hospitals, cancer organizations and other social support organizations.

We ensure sibling support is implemented during pediatric oncology care by training hospital professionals with our SuperSibs! tools and resources. These items are developed with input from siblings, parents, child-life specialists, pediatric oncology social workers and oncology nurses.

Accompanying this training is our SuperSibs! SMART (Sibling Materials And Resource Tools) Box, an efficient and cost-effective way to equip hospital personnel with knowledge and resources about the sibling experience, promote and encourage family-centered-care and change the culture of pediatric oncology care.

The SuperSibs! SMART Box contains strategies and materials for flexible and customizable activities, programs, information and support elements, supplemented

with individualized training from our staff on best practices when using the materials.

Milestones in 2010...

It takes a caring community to bring light and joy to thousands of children as their families battle pediatric cancer. We squeeze dollars of value from every penny received, so your contributions have a tremendous impact! SuperSibs! appreciates each gift and every donor as we all work to help families heal together.

Cancer does not discriminate based on ethnicity and neither does SuperSibs!

The ethnic diversity of children and teens we support is consistent with U.S. childhood

cancer incidence rates by ethnicity.

“During the SuperSibs! Scholarship process, I had to put my emotions down on paper, black and white, and really think about them for the first t ime. I think the biggest effect for me was showing my parents and my sister my essay.

I didn’t realize how good I had been at hiding my emotions from them for the six years since my sister was first diagnosed. It was really the first t ime that I had ever really been fully honest with them. That is something I don’t know if I ever would have done without applying for this scholarship.” SuperSibs! Research shows that 53% of siblings of children with cancer experience moderate to severe Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
