On behalf of the RTA Recreation Club Committees I am proud to present the 79th Annual Report for the 2008/2009 financial year. This year the Committees co-coordinated over seventy social events and eight fundraising activities across the RTA. What a great effort! Through the generosity of RTA staff, their families and friends the Club raised up to $28,000 in fundraising activities across the whole of the RTA. Events such as Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea (Cancer Council), Sarah’s Scarf and Craft Day (CANTEEN), Movember (Beyond Blue and the prostate Cancer Foundation), World’s Greatest Shave (Leukemia Foundation), St Vincent’s de Paul Blanket Appeal, the Christmas Wishing Tree (Salvation Army), Jeans for Genes day and Daffodil day. I would like to thank all the Event Coordinators for their efforts and I want you to know that you have indirectly made a dif-ference in so many people’s lives. The Club’s web site underwent a major change this year and approval was given by the Director, Corporate Services for the web site to be hosted externally for the benefit of our members who are on extended leave, are ex RTA staff, work part-time and for those who do not have access to a computer during working hours. Sue Brown, Web Publisher, Application & Development & Maintenance, IM & IT Branch who is a Club member, developed our new web site. Sue gave us a new look and layout making it easier to search by region to find information about upcoming events and employee benefits. On behalf of the Committee and our members, I would like to thank Sue Brown for her continued support for all the hours she put in creating the site and the ongoing maintenance of the site. Rod Tout, Director Corporate Services and Vice Patron to the Club this year approved the purchase of display boards for Miller Street, North Sydney so the Club could advertise our events. The Club now has use of four boards on each floor except for Level 9. The title of the position of Staff Amenities Officer was changed this year to Recreation Club Coordinator by Human Resource Strategy Branch. This also meant that the Regional positions changed to Regional Recreation Club Coordinator. Sheryl David has been acting in the Recreation Club Coordinator role since Crystal Lenane won a permanent position in Wollongong. Sheryl has displayed her graphic design talents in the Club’s flyers and has given them a very professional new look. The position was advertised last year and unfortunately at the time it was caught up in the recruitment freeze and we could not proceed and appoint anyone to the position on a permanent basis. We have received approval to advertise the role on a permanent basis, the position has been advertised and we hope to finalise the recruitment process by September 2009.

The following members were appointed as Regional Recreation Club Coordinators: Vicki Anthony - Southern Elizabeth Kearns - Hunter Matthew Newman - South West Kathy Martin - Northern Andrew Bament - Western The Regional Recreation Club Coordinators should be commended on their performance. When you consider that they all have substantive positions and are required to run the day to day activities of the Club in their Region and ensure all events are organised. They have done a wonderful job. Congratulations on a job well done. The Club has received the continued support and sponsorship from both the RTA Staff Credit Union through John Kavalieros and the Encompass Credit Union through Brian Bennett and Alan Allard. The Club benefits greatly from monetary support and their attendance to our functions and events. Thank you to all the members who support the Club, because without you there would be no Club. Your continued support in attending our events across the RTA is vital for the continued success of the Club. We do seek your support in increasing our membership and I ask your assistance in encouraging your colleagues to become members and participate in the Club’s activities. I would like to thank all the Committee members and their families who have assisted in the running of our events. Some of those people were Glenys Muir, Crysta Lawler, Jane and Renee Anderson. Also to all the Event Coordinators across the RTA who selflessly give their time outside of working hours to ensure that events are coordinated and supervised for the benefit of members, family and friends especially for the Christmas Family Picnics across the RTA which are our biggest events. Disney on Ice 11 July 2008 Elizabeth Kearns

“Mickey & Minnie’s Amazing Journey” was enjoyed by fifty two kids, mums, dads, friends and grandmothers. According to the mums and dads everyone, especially the kids enjoyed the show immensely. One of the mums said her little two year old clapped and bobbed along with the rest of the kids. He was quite upset to be told it was time to go home at the end as he thought it was just another intermission.

It is responses like this that made the event worthwhile. A great first for the Hunter and we are looking forward to repeating the event next year. Thank you to all the RTA Hunter Recreation committee, volunteers and Megamania staff whose contribution made the event a success. Encompass Credit Union was a major sponsor this year. The Credit Union also supplied show bags for each of the children.

Christmas Morning Tea 9 December 2008 Elizabeth Kearns

This year we broke with tradition and held our get together in the Regional Office training room. Our ‘Petroleum Gardens’ venue can be a bit on the hot side at this time of the year. Order of the morning was to bring your own tea or coffee and enjoy the many choices of ‘fare’ on offer – from hot finger food, cakes and buns to fresh fruit platters.

Christmas Eve Breakfast 22 December 2008 Elizabeth Kearns & Joe Krsul

Valentine’s Day 14 February 2009 Elizabeth Kearns

Traditionally held on Christmas Eve morning this year’s event was a few days earlier and was attended by past and present DMR/RTA staff and partners from Darby Street, Auckland Street and the Newcastle Contact Centre. It is a fabulous time of the morning and this year was no exception. For the past 27 years our venue has been a secluded corner of Civic Park surrounded by trees. Breakfast of bacon and egg rolls with orange juice and champagne ready by 7.00am is a great way to start the day, thanks to our ‘chef’.

This has been another successful Valentine event. While red roses are traditionally associated with Valentines Day this year there were two special orders - arrangements of the ladies favourite colours – an all white and one of purple. ‘Valentines’ were not limited to wives, partners or girl friends – mums and daughters were also on the receiving list.

An Inspector Calls 13 March 2009 Joanne Box

The production of ‘An Inspector Calls’ was attended by a small group of staff, family and friends. Penned in the 1940s the play is part English costume drama, part social criticism and part thriller. The story of an overly confident middle class family enjoying a night of celebration, when they are visited by a police inspector whose questions changed their lives forever. The plays twist left the audience asking questions well after they left the theatre. For some, the evening started with dinner (own cost) with a choice of cuisine at either the Thai Restaurant or Palmas on the Park Restaurant, both within walking distance of the Theatre.

Golf Day 3 April 2009 Elizabeth Kearns & David Busch

The 3rd Annual Golf Day was held at the picturesque Shortland Waters Golf Club. After a week of rain the sky cleared for a beautiful sunny autumn day again. Players travelled from Sydney, Central Coast, Singleton and Newcastle. Everyone enjoyed the day and are looking forward to next year, 2010 is already booked. After an early breakfast of bacon and egg rolls players were ready for a shotgun start at 8.00am. With the warm weather the drink cart was a welcome sight around the course. Our thanks to the RTA Credit Union for their ongoing sponsorship and Helen Portelli for her help on the day.

TAFE Dinner May & June 2009 Elizabeth Kearns

Lovedale Long Lunch is an event that is looked forward to by many people every year and 2009 was no different. Fifty-three staff, family and friends enjoyed a great day in the vineyards of the Hunter Valley sampling wine, enjoying gourmet food and listening to fabulous music. This year we visited three vineyards – Gartleman Hunter Estate, Wanden Valley Estate and Warraroong Estate. We met up with the Sydney group at Wanden Valley and we were able to round-up some Newcastle people for some happy snaps. Not a lot of photos were taken of our group as we tend to do our own thing until it is time to head back to the coach in time to travel to our next vineyard.

Lovedale Long Lunch 16 May 2009 Elizabeth Kearns

These evenings at the TAFE training restaurants are very popular and we are very fortunate to reserve the entire restaurant a couple of times each semester. The students do a wonderful job – it must be quite daunting for a lot of them with a supervisor present and the unknown expectations of the restaurant guests. The evening includes a three course dinner followed by coffee/tea with an after dinner chocolate. While the cost is now $25.00 it is still excellent value. Drinks are available throughout the evening at very reasonable prices.
