through awareness, education and research.

With gratitude from the CHADS Coalition Founders Dear friends, On behalf of the CHADS Board of Directors, we would like to thank you for your ongoing support of CHADS mission to advance the prevention and knowledge of adolescent depression and suicide through awareness, education and research. We are excited about the strides that have been made in all of these areas because of your support.

In 2008, our school outreach remains strong and growing due to the increased number of schools implementing the “Signs Of Suicide” Program. Thanks to the success of our special events, we have increased both awareness and funding to support research. We are excited that we have been able to double our dollars awarded to research this year compared to the previous year.

These accomplishments were made possible by a passionate hard working Board of Directors, as well as many more passionate and dedicated volunteers. We are also grateful to our many individual and corporate donors that have been so very generous to CHADS, and have invested in the mental health of our youth by giving a monetary donation.

We are positioned well and looking forward to a successful 2009. Thank you for placing your trust in our Board of Directors and investing in the mental health of our youth - an investment that will make a positive difference in the lives of our youth.

on May 9, 2008 at Creve Coeur Park • 1.550 participants • Team Taylor was honored with the Spirit Award • Katie’s Krew was honored with the Founders Award • Top fundraising team, LA Oranges raised $13,717 • Featured in seven local newspapers and 3 television stations • Several radio and cable stations ran PSAs • Over 100 businesses donated products, services or cash

• 4th Annual Race Out of the Darkness 5K/10K Run raised over $11,000 on October 12 at Tower Grove Park and had 380 participants

• Dr. Joan Luby, Professor of Psychiatry at Washington University was awarded a $30,000 research grant

• Dr. Kelly Botteron, Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Washington University was awarded a second year research grant extension of $36,000

• Funded four summer student fellowships ($14,000) at Washington University to study early onset mood disorders. CHADS awarded a total of $80,000 in research grants towards adolescent depression and suicide research

• Implemented the S.O.S. (Signs of Suicide) program in 10 local schools

• Made 20 presentations with over 4,000 students in attendance

• Marian McCord was a finalist in the 2008 National Energizer Bunny Award and the St. Louis Business Journal “Community Health Care Hero” Award

• Marian McCord was a guest speaker on NPR Radio and two TV talk shows

• Awarded the 2008 Ladue News Charity Award and a $3,000 donation

• Awarded the Volunteer Service Award from the Volunteer Service Council and received $7,500 which helped improve the web site

• Finalist in the Skandalaris Center for Social Entrepreneurship and Innovative Competition at Washington University

Because of the generosity of so many, CHADS Coalition for Mental Health awarded $80,000 in research grants to study adolescent depression and suicide! 2008: Awarded to Dr. Joan Luby ($60,000 over 2 years) “Changes in brain activation networks in very young depressed children in response to a novel emotion develop-ment treatment.” Professor, Child Psychiatry; Director of Early Emotional Development Program, Washington University School of Medicine. 2007-08: Awarded to Dr. Kelly Botteron, (awarded second year extension of $36,000) “Cortical Integrity of Insular Cortex in Early Onset Major Depression: A Twin MRI and DTI Study” Associate Professor in Child Psychiatry, Washington University School of Medicine

CHADS Coalition also supports undergraduate and medical student summer research fellowships, in hopes of generating more interest in the field of child psychiatry

to address the acute shortage of child psychiatrists. The 2008 grant recipients are: Meredith Stern: “Ventromedial Pre-fontal Cortex Volume in Adolescent Twins with Major Depressive Disorder.” (Mentor, Dr. Kelly Botteron, Associate Professor in Child Psychiatry, Washington University School of Medicine) Mackenzie Leonard: “Depression in preschool aged children of cancer patients.” (Mentor, Dr. Joan Luby, Professor in Child Psychiatry, Washington University School of Medicine) Phillip “James” Sanchez: “Depressive symptoms in patients receiving rTMS therapy for IBS.” (Mentor, Dr. Keith Garcia, Assistant Professor in Psychiatry, Washington University Department of Psychiatry) Katie Belmont: “An investigation of play behaviors in depressed, disruptive, and healthy preschoolers.” (Mentor, Dr. Joan Luby, Professor in Child Psychiatry, Washington University School of Medicine)

CHADS Coalition Memorials Dr. Richard Todd, Former Director, Division of Child Psychiatry at Washington University School of Medicine , was a proud supporter of CHADS Coalition from its inception; CHADS has named the medical student fellowship grants the Dr. Richard Todd Memorial Research Grants in his honor. Dr. Todd died of complications to leukemia at the age of 56.

"There are many groups in our region promoting research for a variety of disorders. None of them address one of the biggest killers of youth - adolescent depression and suicide. CHADS Coalition is making a difference in the lives of teenagers in our area in ways that will also enhance adolescent mental health across the U.S. Please help support their efforts to promote research, awareness and prevention of suicide locally. I do."

David Sargent, Jr., 28, had an infectious smile that would light up a room. You would never know that David suffered from depression, as he hid it well. With his OCD, ADD, anxiety, and depression torturing him, he succumbed to his illnesses by taking his own life on May 23, 2008.

Steven Nieters, 21, lost his life to suicide on January 6, 2008 In August, Steven’s grandmother, Rose Mary Nieters, 79, died from cancer and her family also asked that memorials be given to CHADS Coalition in honor of her beloved grandson, Steven. Steven and Rose Mary will be greatly missed by their family and many friends.

The family and friends of Megan Taylor Meier, 13, celebrated her life by hosting a golf tournament on October 25, 2008 and donated the event’s pro-ceeds which totaled $4,458 to CHADS Coalition in her memory. by suicide on Jan 6, 2008 at the age of 21.
