This has been a very significant year for international development policy and for Scotland. This has been mirrored at NIDOS, with even more active engagement by members and with more than 100 member organisations for the first time. In advance of the referendum, and to put international development into the debate, we facilitated members to produce a key report, Scotland’s Place in Building a Just World. All the major political parties in Scotland responded constructively to its recommendations and we will build on this cross-party support to help contribute to a policy coherent approach to development in Scotland in the future. We kept our members informed of the Post-2015 debate shaping the successor to the Millennium Development Goals in September 2015. Justine Greening MP, Secretary of State for International Development, and Humza Yousaf MSP, Minister for External Affairs and International Development, engaged with members, outlining their strategies on Post-2015. In partnership with the Africa Council and AFFORD, with Africa-UK funding, we supported work with the African diasporan community in Scotland. We were delighted that nearly 200 Africans engaged with this capacity building support. Our Effectiveness programme helped members strengthen their practice and transparency, and a growing number of member organisations have successfully secured DFID, Comic Relief and the Scottish Government’s Small Grants programme funding (nine out of the eleven successful organisations are NIDOS members). Scotland v PovertyA group of 26 NIDOS members came together to produce Scotland v Poverty, an exhibition and website calling for a more just world and highlighting why this is not a matter of charity but of rights. The exhibition, which was launched during the Commonwealth Games, demonstrates some of the ways that Scottish organisations are contributing to poverty reduction and global justice and how the public can get involved.

“Membership of NIDOS has enabled the voice of small organisations to be heard in the wider arena. We feel that this is particularly important as small organisations tend to have unique insights into development as they often have direct connections to the communities they serve. Participation in Scotland v Poverty has greatly helped in showing people in Scotland the work being done by small organisations here working with communities abroad.” George Rawlinson, Solas Educational Trust

Networking and partnershipOur varied networking and collaborative events have enabled members to link with each other and with parliamentarians, government officials, academics and businesses from across Scotland. Our members used these opportunities to develop new projects, find partners, access new information, and help others to forge new links with communities and organisations abroad.

“We are a small solidarity organisation yet our collaboration with NIDOS has helped us have an enormous impact. NIDOS has been instrumental in helping our group network and meet others who are interested in learning more about Haiti and the wider Caribbean. This has been instrumental in our lobbying and advocacy efforts at the Scottish Parliament, the European Parliament and further afield.” Eve Hayes de Kalaf, Haiti Support Group

Influencing This has been an exciting year in the context of the Scottish Independence Referendum. In partnership with 2014 Matters, NIDOS and our members made sure Scotland’s international relations and global impact were part of the debate, through five hustings events and an active online discussion. We also debated with our colleagues in the domestic voluntary sector and with the Yes and No campaigns, encouraging a more global view on a domestic debate.

Opening up relationships with funders

We’ve worked closely with the Scottish Government, Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland, DFID, and Comic Relief to enable good funder relationships. Training and information sessions have also helped members build skills and confidence to make strong applications. Nine out of the eleven successful Scottish Government Small Grants Programme applicants were NIDOS members, and more members have accessed DFID’s GPAF and Comic Relief funding than previously.

“Just wanted to say thank you for the UK Aid Match training workshop – I found it really, really useful, and it will definitely help us going forward.” Carolyn Flanagan, Mission Aviation Fellowship

Post-2015 FrameworkNIDOS has been closely following the emerging Post-2015 international development framework that will replace the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). We have been enabling our members to tap into the global civil society network, Beyond 2015, and prepare for implementation by providing policy briefings, engaging with southern partners in Malawi, Tanzania and Pakistan, and contributing to the Scottish Government’s Post-2015 working group.

Policy Coherence for DevelopmentPolicy coherence for development (PCD) considers the global implications of all government actions. It ensures the positive aspects of our aid programme are enhanced, not undermined, by other areas of policy and practice. NIDOS facilitated our members to produce a key report, Scotland’s Place in Building a Just World: Shaping a Coherent International Development Policy for Scotland, calling for a PCD approach in Scotland. Reponses to this report show cross-party consensus in Scotland on a PCD approach.

“Concern Worldwide has found NIDOS to be a good vehicle for collective advocacy work. We were active in helping produce a major report called Scotland’s Place in Building a Just World… which sets out a framework for Scotland’s international development policy underpinned by our key values – including wisdom, justice, compassion and integrity as well as equality, sustainability and solidarity.” Azra Sheikh, Concern Worldwide

Supporting effectiveness and transparency – building good practiceWe’ve helped members improve their governance, partnership working and project management. Over 40% of NIDOS members have used our Effectiveness Toolkit and eight of our members publish to the International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI). Inputting actively to OSCR’s review of Charity Regulation this year has meant that staff and trustees at OSCR have a much better understanding of our sector.

“We found that using the Effectiveness Tool and undertaking a full assessment has had a huge benefit to how we deliver our programmes, manage our internal processes and review our governance processes. This has led to improvements in what we do across the charity and helped greatly in delivering our vision, mission and strategy.” James Wells, EMMS

NIDOSDiasporan communityOur partnership with the Africa Council and AFFORD, under the umbrella of Africa-UK, supported nearly 200 Africans in Scotland to voice their opinions and concerns on international development. Key topics have included the importance of diasporan remittances, the role of enterprise and business for development in Africa.

“By joining NIDOS last year we have strengthened our capacity to successfully apply for international development funding and established critical connections to advance the Post-2015 debate in Scotland. In my experience NIDOS staff have deep listening skills, being attentive to members’ needs, and acting on our suggestions.” May East, CIFAL Scotland
