P salm 27:14 states, “Wait for the Lord, be strong and let your heart take courage, wait for the Lord.” I

don’t know about the rest of you but it is extremely hard for me to wait. I admit I am not the most patient person. However, I have learned – and continue to learn – that all things are accomplished in God’s time, not mine. We have prayed and prayed and I know you have prayed also, for more staff to fill our many vacant positions. And all of a sudden – or so it seemed – we were blessed with a multitude of service-oriented people who wanted to answer our need for staff! Rogeric and Meghan Govan joined us as houseparents in Home 6 and Meghan will be working at the school. Jon O’Keefe is our new Program Services Director and Marci O’Keefe is our new school secretary. Jenn Swartz will be serving as the social services secretary. And another person “rejoining” us is Vickie Terhune, serving as Interim Principal until we can find a candidate to fill that position. Wow! That is indeed a lot of answers to our prayers. This should continue to encourage us in our faith. God’s time schedule is not our time schedule. He does things in his own time; He knows exactly when and how things should happen. It gives me, as I am sure it does all of us, a sense of calmness to know our God is in control and will have things happen when He is ready.

And the good news just keeps on coming! The Federal government recently put in place requirements for agencies such as Shults-Lewis to become accredited through an outside agency (such as CARF or COA). The Family First Preventative Services Act, increases the amount of federal dollars

that are available for preventative services. The law also increases the requirements for organizations that provide congregate care services. What that means to us is relatively simple; if the Department of Child Services (DCS) is going to continue to utilize our services and place children with us, then we must become accredited. This also means more paperwork to complete and more policies and procedures to update. Again, I see the hand of God in this task. Staff worked many hours to make this happen, along with the help of a consultant who knew what he was doing because we did not! And I am thrilled to announce I just received our accreditation certificate from CARF!

A major plus in becoming accredited is that it shows clients and placing agencies that Shults-Lewis is committed to providing quality services with integrity and professionalism. Please say a prayer of thanksgiving for this blessing for Shults-Lewis. I just want all of you to know that my plans are to continue visiting you, our supporting congregations. I have already had the pleasure of worshipping with a few of you and look forward to meeting and fellowshipping with like-minded people who are committed to this ministry.

God is Lord of all and is taking care of this ministry, all in His infinite time.

God Bless All of You.

H ave you seen that social media meme with the guy sitting at a table with a sign that makes a simple statement like “Hot Dogs are sandwiches” and

it always ends with “Change my mind”? Here’s my sign… “Memorial Day through Annual Day is the MOST Wonderful Time of the Year. Change my mind.” You can’t.

I love summer. I love late sunsets. I love the heat. I love the groups that come (though y’all come all year, we do have a lot more visitors from Memorial Day to Annual Day)! I love the Golf Tournament. I love Annual Day. I LOVE IT ALL!

This year is proving to be my favorite! We kicked off summer with yours truly turning the Big 40. Around here, “0” birthdays are celebrated with a party. We laugh about how Development is organized chaos, and they did an awesome job throwing a “chaos” themed party.

From that moment, we haven’t slowed down. We participated in Valparaiso’s Chalk the Walk. This community event allows us to interact with other businesses and people from Valpo and to invite them to Annual Day, especially for the Rummage Sale.

The Golf Tournament was a great success! Though we had less golfers…and speaking of that, my random tangent, LADIES….Golf is no longer just for men!!!! I would love to see more women, more juniors, more mixed teams! Anyway, the Golf Tournament raised over $25,000! So thankful for all my amazing golfers and our sponsors! Mark your calendar for June 12, 2020 for next year’s tournament.

You all spent time praying for our kids, staff, board, and agency on Day of Prayer & Giving. We truly appreciate

the time you spent praying for us!!! I look forward to sharing a final financial total with you in our next Telegram!

We’ve had some amazing groups already this summer with more to come. West Side (Elgin, IL) came in May to get our flowers planted and the front of the office & around the sign looking amazing. Naperville Youth Group (IL) came for their first mission trip and worked extremely hard on several tasks. Whiteland (IN) came and literally moved boulders for us and then treated us to pizza & a movie! And as I’m typing this, I’m looking forward to groups from Plymouth, MI, Florissant, MO, and Midland, MI to spend time with us over the next two weeks. We’ve got bonfires, No Fun Color Run, cookouts, 9 Square, softball and SO many activities planned! I LOVE when people visit.

If you haven’t been to campus, COME! Even if it’s just a day for tour, come meet the kids and the staff. A perfect time to come visit campus is Annual Day, our Open House, Saturday, September 21st. Such a great day of food, fellowship, and FUN! Load the van and bring some friends. Don’t forget your full Change Cans!

OH, and many of our commodity congregations have made some AMAZING baskets of goodies for the auction!! I want to buy them all! So come, support your favorite ministry, and keep your favorite Development Director from buying all the goods! Seriously, come have an awesome day with us.

See, “Memorial Day through Annual Day is the MOST Wonderful Time of the Year!”

Y es, I’m back! I decided after a two and a half year vacation it was time to get back to work! I

am excited to be back at my old job as school principal. I was told that I am not retired, I am retreaded! I like that! I will once again be

working at the place I love that has been my life for many years.

Retirement was wonderful but I really missed the socialization with the staff and students. I was reminded that this year’s theme for the agency is “togetherness” and I realized that was exactly what I was missing in my life. I look forward to getting back into the swing of the school schedule, meetings, and working with my colleagues to continue our mission of “responding with God’s love to serve and strengthen children and families.”

Summer school is in full swing now. The students are earning credits to either make up missed classes or to get ahead for the next school year. We will be planning some extra activities for the students plus we will enjoy the fellowship with the groups who will be here to work on the campus this summer.

Annual Day is just around the corner again. We hope all of you can come “together” with us and enjoy the activities planned for that day. I will personally be excited to see many old friends and former students. Please put September 21st on your calendar! Also, please consider coming to our campus at your convenience and sharing with our students your experiences in a career, hobby or just anything that you think might interest them. We have had pottery making, basket weaving, arts and crafts, a magician, music groups, and motivational speakers. We love to have visitors! Just let me know and we will set up a time for you to come.

Lastly, don’t forget to keep clipping those Box Tops! But heads up!! Box Tops are going digital! We will give you more information as it becomes available but you will begin seeing a Box Top that says “No More Clipping – Scan Your Receipt.” By scanning your receipts using the Box Top App, the Box Tops will be added instantly to our school’s earnings online. In the meantime, keep sending the clipped Box Tops until they are expired. We use the earnings for field trips and special activities. Thank you for all you do for our school. Please continue to pray for us. See you soon!

School HappeningsVickie Terhune, School [email protected]

G od has heard your prayers and in His time has provided an influx of staff members!

Rogeric and Meghan Govan arrived on June 1st and will be houseparents to boys. Meghan grew up in the area and always knew about Shults-Lewis as her grandfather is Board President Peter Bumpass. Rogeric has worked with youth and comes to us with a lot of experience and passion. Meghan will be working in the school starting this Fall! We are so blessed to have them here.

Jon & Marci O’Keefe came to campus on July 1st. Jon has taken the role of Director of Program Services. While he has spent most of his career preaching (including in Indiana and Illinois), he has spent the last 5 years at Central Texas Children’s Home overseeing their program. Marci has taken the position of School Secretary. She is already fitting right in at the school and we are excited to have them both as a part of our team.

Jenn Swartz has joined the Social Services team as a Social Services Secretary. Jenn comes to us with experience of working with traumatized youth. And as a detail oriented, organized person she will be a strong asset to the team.

Finally, a not-so-new addition to the staff, Vickie Terhune is back filling in as Interim Principal for the school. When Mr. Zandstra decided to step down and only focus on teaching, Vickie agreed to come fill the position while we look for

someone to fill that role. We are excited to have her back on campus!

Back in April, Joe Allen resigned his positon of Director of Operations as he was offered another position in town. While we were sad to see him leave, we are thankful for his five years of service and he will forever be a part of the Shults-Lewis family.

We are truly grateful for all the new staff. We are still actively looking for: Principal, English Teacher, and Director of Operations. Please be praying for us through this search and if you or someone you know may be interested, let us know!
