Our vision is a community where everyone has a simple, decent, affordable place to live and where poverty housing is unacceptable.

Every morning, volunteers adorned with safety gear gather together on the build site to hear how their efforts will impact a family’s future and permanently improve their own community.

Dear Friends, What a year it has been! A little more than 12 months ago, Habitat launched A World of Hope: It Starts at Home, and now we are celebrating its completion. This $12 million fundraising campaign had the bold goal of buying land to support our next five years of building and increasing our homebuilding by 50%. These were huge ambitions, especially in the midst of “The Great Recession,” but our community stepped up, and I am amazed by all the generosity. Not only did we receive some of the largest gifts in our history, we also received more individual gifts than ever before. Supporters gave what they could, some making sacrifices to give more than in years prior. It’s bigheartedness like this that makes us so proud to live in our wonderful city.

Because of the generosity of people like you, Habitat now has land in place to build homes for 150 local families! We have targeted our land purchases to neighborhoods that have the greatest need for homeownership, creating stability that will have a ripple effect on the whole community. We are building in neighborhoods like Centennial in southeast Portland, which is the site of Oregon’s largest Habitat project to date; 45 homes, which will become the homes for an estimated 150 kids. Can you imagine what these 45 families can accomplish and bring to a community when they no longer have to worry about keeping a roof over their children’s heads?

So, what’s next? In addition to building 150 new homes in the next five years, we plan to launch the Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative (NRI). NRI will be a comprehensive, block by block approach that will engage and respond to a neighborhood’s needs and aspirations with an expanded range of Habitat products, services and partnerships focused on low-income, owner-occupied homes. This includes: major and minor repair work, weatherization, and home rehabilitation. Much of the work will be done alongside community partners already working within the neighborhood, creating the highest quality for all residents. And all of this work will be done utilizing Habitat’s hand up, not hand out, self-help financing model that has been successful for more than three decades.

This ambitious, five-year strategic plan will require many hands to get the job done. We are grateful for all of your support and hope you will join us again, as we launch this new initiative. We are confident it will allow us to serve more families who desperately need and deserve a safe, affordable place to call home.

Mark Waller, Chair of Board of Directors Steve Messinetti, President and CEO

Once the construction of a Habitat neighborhood is complete, the real impact on that community begins to develop. Habitat homeowners feel a special bond with their neighbors because many of them have worked side by side, literally building their homes together. Habitat works with homeowners to set up homeowner associations, which are run by the Habitat partner families. It is through these associations that the families work together to maintain vibrant, healthy communities.

Mislaydi, Maria and Yuri are on the board for the Victoria Cottages Homeowners Association. These three hardworking, bright women work together to make sure their homes and landscaping are being maintained and that all 14 children in the community have a safe place to learn and grow.

“While being on the board can be a challenge, it allows me to work with my neighbors, build community, and maintain the safety and value of the homes we finally own!” – Mislaydi Garcia-Ollet

New homeowner, Matana, lets her daughter (right) hold the key to their new home at Victoria Cottages.

Studies show that homeowners take a more active role in the community than they did as renters.

The Koehler FamilyA few years ago, during a holiday gathering, the Koehler family began a discussion about what they could do to give back to their community and make a difference in somebody’s life. Tom Koehler, co-chair of Habitat’s fundraising cabinet, knew it took $75,000 to build a Habitat home and so he approached his sister, Jinx Faulkner, and led the idea to bring their family together to sponsor a home for a local family in need.

Across town, Evelynlena was celebrating the holidays with her three girls in their small, drafty apartment, not knowing that this would be the last Christmas she would have to worry about keeping a roof over her family’s heads.

The Koehlers got to work, asking every member of their family to give what they could. Together, three generations of the Koehler family, even 13 year-old Evelin, raised over $83,000!

Over the course of the build, Evelynlena and the Koehlers got to know each other well as they swung hammers side-by-side, building a safe, warm house for Evelynlena’s children to call home.

“This was a great way for every generation to participate, giving money and then swinging a hammer,” said Jinx. “In the end we were able to do something together that was far greater than we could ever do separately.”

Evelynlena received the keys to her home in north Portland this past March.
