AROUND THE ARCHDIOCESE
WANTING MORE FROM GOD - MONASTERY RETREAT August 14-16
Many of us feel lonely at
times and God can strike
us as more of a concept
than a living reality.
Some of us go through the
motions and meet our
obligations, but with an
inner emptiness, as if we
are missing out somehow.
Prayer can seem like God is not listening or doesn’t really care,
and we can be tempted to give up. This retreat provides tools
for becoming more aware of the Loving Presence and Action
of the Living God—a recognition that can imbue everyday life
with meaning and purpose. Contact Patti at the Monastery in
Conyers for a reservation: 770-760-0959 or
HEALING OUR TIRED HEART RETREAT August 28-30 Blessed Trinity Shrine Retreat, Ft. Mitchell, Alabama is offer-
ing a weekend retreat entitled “Healing Our Tired Heart” on
August 28-30, 2015. Caregivers, parents, those in helping pro-
fessions and anyone overworking often get edge, sick and even
die prematurely because of “compassion fatigue.” If you are
feeling tired, a bit negative, burdened or wishing you could
change something to get a new life, you might be giving too
much.
The retreat begins with registration at 7:00 p.m. on Friday,
August 28 and concludes with dinner at noon on Sunday. For
registration information call 334-855-4474 or write Blessed
Trinity Shrine Retreat, 107 Holy Trinity Road, Ft. Mitchell,
AL 36856.
“[St. Francis of Assisi] helps us to see that an
integral ecology calls for openness to categories
which transcend the language of mathematics and
biology, and take us to the heart of what it is to be
human. Just as happens when we fall in love with
someone, whenever he would gaze at the sun, the
moon or the smallest of animals, he burst into
song, drawing all other creatures into his
praise.” (11)

LAUDATO SI’
ON CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME
Choose one of the following activities as a way to further reflect on the Sunday readings: Have the family sit around a table.
Play some reflective music. Pass around a loaf of bread. Invite each person to break off a piece of bread, telling them not to eat the bread yet. When everyone has taken a piece of bread, invite them to examine the bread: smell it, feel it, and look closely. Finally, ask them to eat the bread. Ask them to share the results of their examination and what memories and thoughts came to mind as they ate the bread. Do the same with grape juice.
You are Jesus’ hands and feet on this earth. There are many hungry people waiting for help. Have your family help at a food bank or soup kitchen. If possible go as a family to deliver food to a shut-in. Discuss what hunger feels like. Discuss what it must feel like to be delivered from that hunger.

CLASSES BEGIN THE WEEKEND OF AUGUST 15 & 16
ACTIVITY OF THE WEEK
G.I.F.T. REGISTRATION
Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Reading I : Exodus 16:2-4, 12-15
The Lord provides what we need.
The people speak of death twice in this passage, which reflects anxiety due
to hunger.
When God provides manna and quail, they ask, “What is this?”
This all occurred one month after leaving Egypt.
Reading II : Ephesians 4:17, 20-24
Be renewed in the spirit of your mind; put away your old self.
The young Church is persuading the people to put away the ways of the
world, possibly numerous gods and immorality—much as it is in any
society at any time.
The passage moves back and forth between denunciation and urging.
The central point is that a radical change is needed.
Gospel : John 6:24-35
Do not work for food that perishes; work for food that endures for eternal life.
Jesus appears to be aware that the people are shallow in their commitment.
The crowd has focused on the sign and failed to believe its message.
Jesus is the manna, the provision from God to quench spiritual hunger; he is
the Bread of Life.

REGISTRACIONES DE G.I.F.T.

STEWARDSHIP
SPACE FOR ADS
TRUSTING IN GOD In the Gospels we see evidence of Mary’s essential willingness to trust in God’s plan. Mary’s response to
the angel’s announcement that she was to be the mother of the Messiah is a lesson in trust. When you
wonder how you can serve, forgive, and give as God calls us to, learn from Mary’s example.

ANNUAL APPEAL 2015
“All This I Do For the Sake of the Gospel”
We have reached our goal in pledges for the 2015 Archbishop’s Annual
Appeal! But we really should be achieving TWICE our goal each year,
since AAA funds received over and above our goal return to us at IHM
without any Archdiocesan assessment! Our gifts help the charitable
works of the Archdiocese AND they help our parish. If you have not
already made a pledge to the 2015 AAA, please visit
http://appeal.archatl.com to make your pledge today!
Thank you to all who have already pledged! Remember to look for
your monthly pledge reminders, and please do your best to honor your
pledge before the end of the year. If you are having any
difficulty whatsoever with your pledge or pledge reminders, please
contact Richard Plachta at [email protected] or 404-636-1418,
ext. 245.
Deo Gratias! We are grateful to all of our parishioners who have remembered this parish in their wills or estate
plans. Did you know that persons who have made a planned gift for our parish automatically receive membership
in the Deo Gratias Society of the Catholic Foundations of North Georgia? Among other benefits, this member-
ship includes an invitation to the annual Deo Gratias Society Mass and luncheon with Archbishop Gregory in
September. If you have already included our parish in your will or estate plans, but have not informed the parish
office, please let us know so we can coordinate your invitation to the September event—or call The Catholic
Foundation directly at 404-497-9440.
