Officers’ Call

Commander’s Corner

Welcome, beloved and wonderful members

and friends of Bicentennial Post 1976’s second

quarterly newsletter. Hopefully you are as

excited about reading it as I am about writing

it. The past few months have been pretty darn

fun around the Post home with barbeques,

karaoke nights, live bands, birthdays, and just

overall general camaraderie. I am crossing my

fingers that the next three to four months will

be just as exciting and fun. For any other

updates or schedulings or points of interest

that may change, check out www.post1976.org

and click on the “Calendar” or “Newsletter”

links on the old interwebs (the internet). As

always, you can pick up the phone and give us

a call at 703-941-9608.

If there is anything you like or don’t like about

how things are going or are being run around

the Post, feel free to contact me directly or put

a suggestion in the “Suggestion Box” above

the water cooler by the end of the bar. Please

refrain from running to Diane every time

something doesn’t go your way or you get mad

about somebody or something. She is

unbelievably busy keeping our Post running in

tip top condition.

I want to welcome everyone back from

summer vacations and wish all the children a

happy and safe new school year. I would also

like to give a special shout out thank you to all

the awesome volunteers for all the different

functions we have these days. Keep coming

back—it works if you work it!!

Until next quarter’s “Commander’s Corner,”

Roy McCracken, Commander

1st Vice’s Report

CPT Devin P. Millson (Co. F 429th

Support

Battalion, VaARNG), a fine member of Post

1976, invited Robert Stanley, the Post’s

Service Officer, and the Membership

Committee to attend Company F’s Family Day

event on August 3rd

at Ft. A.P. Hill. Three of

CPT Millson’s troopers joined. A take-home

message from that event was that such

gatherings provide an excellent venue to speak

to the families of service members and urge

them to ensure that they have their service

member’s DD 214 and other pertinent

information stored in a safe and accessible

place in the event that documentation is

required for such things as healthcare or other

fortunate or unfortunate events. It is my

understanding that securing such

documentation can take a very long time, and

the burden of doing so is often not what

families need when things happen. Those

events, of course, provide opportunities to

interest not only service members but also

their families in joining the appropriate unites

of the American Legion’s Bicentennial Post

1976. Thank you Devin, and thank you

Robert!

On behalf of American Legion Bicentennial

Post 1976, I would like to thank all of you who

renewed your membership for 2015, and to

As of August 24th

, we have reached 53% of

our annual Department of Virginia

membership goal. This exceeds the

Department goal of reaching 50% of the

annual goal by September 4th

.

The Membership Committee could use some

volunteers. That Committee works closely

with the Activities & Entertainment

Committee to generate new members and to

revitalize and maintain the active participation

of our current members in Post activities and

entertainment events.

Please feel more than free to develop ideas for

compelling new events and pass them on to

Eugene “Cornbread” Kimbrell, our 2nd

Vice

Commander and leader of the Activities &

Entertainment Committee, or another officer

or Post member. Be sure to attend the

excellent events which the Post and its

member organizations provide.

As a component of our active membership

campaign, the Veterans of Northern Virginia

meetup group, an arm’s-length social network

facility, has been activated and utilized for our

past few events (www.meetup.com/Veterans-

of-Northern-Virginia). Forty four percent of

the 25 members of the group are not

members of the American Legion, but could

be: they are all veterans.

person at the Post or send your annual dues to

us at:

Vice’s Report

Well, here it is September and another quarter has

gone by. Summer is over, kids are back in school,

and folks will be spending more time at the Post.

First, I want to thank Miss Joyce Landry, Miss

Patti George, and Miss Eva Baldwin for serving

on the Activities Committee (again) and

welcoming some new members to it: Scott and

Michelle Pratt, and Charlie and Mila Robinson.

Maybe they will have some new and fresh ideas

for some good things to do at the Post.

We still have all our weekly and monthly activities

going on: Queen of Hearts every Thursday,

drawings at 8 p.m.; Commander’s Breakfast the

3rd

Sunday of every month, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., $8 all

you care to eat; Karaoke with Babs the 3rd

Saturday of every month—come on out and sing

all your favorite songs.

On September 11th

we will be having a memorial

service for all the folks that lost their lives on that

terrible day. The service will be at 7 p.m.

September 21st will be our Flag Retirement at 2

p.m. right after the Commander’s Breakfast.

Please come out and take part. If you have any

Flags that are no longer serviceable bring them to

the Post and we will be happy to retire them for

you.

October 31st is our Halloween Party starting at 8

p.m., so start planning your best costume. We

usually have some pretty good ones and these

folks are hard to beat.

On November 1st we are going to be having our

first Country night, with the Brandy Stills Band

performing live at the post from 8-12 come on out

fir some foot stompin’.

On November 14th

we will be having a movie

night. The way it will work is we will have about

five movies to pick from; the movie with the most

votes to watch is the one we will watch on a large

movie screen (I think it’s like 11 feet by an acre or

something like that). We will have pratt corn

(popcorn) and hot dogs all for $5 so come on let’s

make this a date night with your sweetheart.

Then of course there’s Thanksgiving, and yes we

will be having our Post Family Thanksgiving

Dinner. We will take care of all the meats. Fix

your favorite side dish and let’s eat; there will be a

signup sheet on the wall by the bar.

That’s about it for now, but if anyone has any

ideas of things to do please let us know—just tell

one of the folks on the Activities Committee and

we will see if we can make it happen. With that

this is Eugene aka “Cornbread” saying come on

out to the Post and let’s have some fun. Stay safe!

Historian’s Report

As we approach September 11 please take a

minute and remember the nearly 3,000 souls lost

in the horrific attacks at the World Trade Centers,

Flight 93, and here in D.C. at the Pentagon.

Always remember and never forget. Please stop by

this tragedy on September 11 at 7 p.m.

I want to wish all the Coasties a belated happy

birthday—looking good for 224 years old. In the

coming months we celebrate three more services

birthdays: the oldest, the U.S. Navy, turns 239 in

October; and the Marine Corps turns 239 in

November. The baby of the group turns 67 in

September. Raise a drink and toast to ALL

services and members past and present for

defending the GREATEST nation on the face of

the Earth.

On September 16th

the Navy will be welcoming

the newest Chief Petty Officers to the fleet in a

an email and I will make sure you get on my

mailing list. We hope to see you at the meetings.

Our membership goal for 2015 is 166 members. If

you have any family or friends eligible for

membership please send them our way. Our

District President, Marty McGrail, has requested

that we have 60% of our dues be in by November

6th

. Please send in your payment to Micki Welsh

ASAP.

The White House Ornaments are in. They are $20

each, same as last year.

Please keep the following members in your

thoughts and prayers:

Pam Barnes – She lost her mom, JoAnn Barnes,

on June 14th

. JoAnn had been a member since

1992 and will be missed by many.

Brandy Esposito-Scroggins – Brandy was in a

motorcycle accident and is recuperating at her

home in Annandale.

Sons of the American Legion Report

The Summer has been a relaxing time for Post

1976 SAL. It’s now time to get back to the Post

1976 SAL business goals.

SAL will be providing the food for one Thursday

each month on the Queen of Hearts night, and one

Sunday each month for Football Sunday. Come on

out and associate with the Post members; you will

have an enjoyable time.

SAL is currently accepting membership renewals

or new memberships for the 2015 year; we are in

the Early Bird season for membership. If you

renew by the end of September, you will be

included in the Early Bird Period. The Post will

schedule a weekend day during the Fall to

celebrate with all Early Bird members. Come on

out and have some free beer with all other Early

Bird members.

SAL has already renewed 21 members for 2015; if

you would like to renew, and also become an

Early Bird member; you can place your renewal

request in an envelope addressed to Mike T, with

the $30 renewal fee. Dual members who pay only

the State Membership cost will pay $11 for their

dual SAL membership. The bartender on duty will

pin it on the bulletin board, and I will provide a

2015 membership card, which I will either mail to

you or place in an envelope on the bulletin board

for your retrieval.

The next SAL meeting is scheduled for the first

Thursday of September, 9/4/2014. We would like

any recommendations for events or any other

worthwhile endeavors that we can undertake

during the year which would benefit the Post.

Please schedule this meeting in your calendar, and

if you are interested in renewing that night, you

will receive your 2015 card immediately.

See you all at the September meeting.

American Legion Riders

First, I would like to sincerely thank all those who

helped out with the annual BBQ back in August.

Whether you showed up to support us, slung some

beers, sold tickets, or helped in any way you could

I truly appreciate it. Because of all of you we are

able to donate $1,500 to Warrior 360. If you

haven’t heard of them, check them out at

www.warrior360.com. They are an awesome

charity providing any assistance to our wounded

comrades. What they do puts minds at ease in

knowing someone is there to help if needed. We

will be inviting them out to our September riders

meeting on the 18th

to give them a check, please

stop in and show them support from the entire

legion family!

Summer is almost over and another great riding

season is about to begin. With fall comes the

leaves changing, which is a great sight whether

you are in a car, plane, train, or best yet…on a

bike. This September we have our State Rally on

the 12th

-14th

down in Petersburg. Let me know if

you want to go and I can get you the appropriate

paperwork. Not too many rides on the books right

now, but continue to check out our shutterfly page

as well as Facebook in order to stay up-to-date. I

know I am looking forward to the leaves changing

and hitting the Blue Ridge Mountains for a ride.

Keep the rubber side down and shinny side up.
