I’m Esmee, 28 years old and I love art, de-sign and fashion. Interested in magazines and graphic design as well, I created the first edition of the magazine AnnaGee in June 2012. Besides that, I blog about these subjects on www.annageemag.com.

I live in the Netherlands, with my boy-friend, and started this blog/magazine in April 2012. In daily life I’m an art histori-an. Please feel free to contact me, I’m very interested in your opinions or suggestions for the blog: [email protected], on twitter @annageemag, FB or on my site, www.annageemag.com!

WINTER

earest reader,

Finally, the second edition of AnnaGee is here! It took me way lon-ger than expected, for multiple reasons. Exactly six months ago, the website www.annageemag.com went online. The response I got was very overwhelming and very nice, so thank you for that. The whole experience of blogging is also something very interesting. The blog is slowly growing, and I’m very happy with that. But, blogging takes time, and for that reason the magazine is a little bit delayed. There is also something different from the last edition. The subject Food is gone. It turned out, that I’m not such a good food writer after all….

But what is the theme of this new edition? As promised, it will be about travel. You can travel in your heart, in real life or in your head. And what do you need most when you travel? Maps! Even thought we all have a navigation system on our phones, there is nothing as nice as a real map. That’s why you see a lot of maps in this maga-zine. First, as an art form. The maps made by Blaeu in the se-venteenth century, are now famous for their beauty. They’re a piece of art. In the present time, artists still use maps a lot as inspiration, as you can see in the works of Ai WeiWei and Guillermo Kuitca. Travel in fashion means that you need a map to know where you can shop the best in the fashion capital of the world, Paris. So there-fore I’ve created my own little shopping guide. But, you can’t travel without some good clothes in your suitcase, so that’s why we look at one of the best travel brands of all time, Louis Vuitton. To travel also means getting to know another culture, and their aes-thetic preferences. In the design section we are looking at the design coming from Scandinavia, to see what they can bring you when you travel there.

Anyway, I hope you’ll enjoy it just as much as the last number. I wish you all a very happy Christmas, and a great 2013!

ART

In one-way or another, art has always been in-spired by travel. When you travel, you meet new people and other cultures. It has always inspired artists. When you travel, you need a map. And the history of cartography is very interesting.

One of the best-known mapmaker was the Dutch William Blaeu (1571-1638), together with his son Joan Blaeu (1596-1673). They are famous for their Atlas Maior. This world atlas was first published in 1635. The second version was published in 1662 in Latin and there were 594 maps in this atlas.

William Blaeu was such a good mapmaker that he was responsible for the maps the Dutch East India Company used. Their maps are full of colour, very detailed and you can look at them for hours. That’s why nowadays, the maps of Blaeu are considered a form of art.

On the left page you can see two maps of them. The map of the United Provinces of the Netherlands is from the hand of William Blaeu and is publis-hed in 1604. The Map of Scandinavia is from Joan Blaeu, and is dated 1645-1664.

GUILLERMO KUITCAThe works of the Argentinian artist Guillermo Kuitca (1961) are inspired by the realms of architecture, theater and cartography. A lot of maps are used in his work.

His inspirations are themes of dislo-cation and the intersection between public and private spaces. One way to explore the theme of dislocation is to use maps and architectural plans.

The maps are used in all kind of ways. The work Afghanistan is created on a mattress. Their is a disconnection between a the coldness of a map (and in this case the map of a very interes-ting country) and the warmth of a bed which looks like someone just stepped out of it. The maps of Kuitca create diffusion in your head.

AI WEIWEI Most of the work of the Chinese Ai WeiWei (1957) is political and that’s also how he uses the concept of the map in his work. The World Map is made out of hundreds layers of cotton and is therefore very hard to create. It is a protest from WeiWei against the clothing industry and their cheap labour. People work very hard in the enormous clothing industry for very little money. Past and present are never far away in the work of WeiWei, as you can see in the artwork Map of China, created in 2004. WeiWei made this work from ironwood from dismantled temples of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Be-cause he uses a material from another time and era of the history of China, the map of China gets completely dif-ferent meaning.

Who doesn’t want to travel to Paris? I’ve been there many times and it is truly one of the best cities to visit. And when you visit one of the best fashion cities in the world, you want to know where to shop!

Therefore I’ve created my own little shopping guide, based around the sixth arrondissement, Saint Germain des Prés.

This is situated in the heart of Paris’ Rive Gauche, or Left Bank. It’s close to Musée d’ Orsay and the Louvre as well.

Besides St Germain des Prés, the Latin Quarter is also there, just as the Luxem-bourg gardens.

FASHION

If there is one brand in fashion that has to do something with travel, than off course it is Louis Vuitton. Created in 1854, it began as a company that created lightweight trunks and the famous logo is widely known. Since a couple of years, the fashion shows of Louis Vuitton are real spectacles. The concept of travel is never far away, and in the show of Fall 2012 RTW there even was a real train at the show. And because you can’t travel with good attire, and it is now the end of 2012, (the season where the fashion was designed for), here are some of the looks of this show.

If you travel, you’re introdu-ced to new designs. Helsinki was the design capital of the year 2012. Reason enough to look a little bit closer to the design from the Scandinavian countries. It’s clean and clear and it has a connection with nature often.

Have you seen the lights I’ve shown once on Designing Monday on annageemag.com? Made by Kristine Five Melvaer?

Here are some cool other Scandinavian designs from great designers.
