FROM THE PRESIDENT & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

April 8, 2007

Dear Friends –

The Zoo is one of Cleveland’s best civic assets, on track to becoming one of

the top ten zoos in the country. The most popular cultural venue in the area,

the Zoo is a leader in the rich cultural mix that makes Northeast Ohio stand

out as a region with great quality of life.

Best of all, the Zoo Society encourages the Zoo to dream boldly about its

future as a center for conservation excellence. Milestones in 2006 include

a transformative $-million grant from The George Gund Foundation to green

the Zoo’s newest exhibit, African Elephant Crossing (opening in 200).

Also in 2006, we made huge strides in ensuring “Everyone’s Zoo” remains

affordable and accessible to all members of our community. Every year, one

fifth of all visitors attend the Zoo for free or at a deeply discounted rate. All

guests have access to safe green space and family fun along with innovative,

award-winning conservation education programs.

The Zoo Society is committed to providing the margin of excellence that

takes the Zoo from good to great. As the Zoo’s advancement partner, the

nonprofit Zoo Society annually provides 2 to 5% of the Zoo’s operating

budget; secures most, if not all, of the funding for innovative educational

outreach and international conservation programs; and is committed to

seeking 50% of funding for major capital improvements. In 2006, the Zoo

Society raised almost twice as much as in the previous year, while keeping

operating expenses flat.

Pat Mullin, President & Liz Fowler, Executive Director

Page 3: Animals in the Zoo

We invite all residents of Northeast Ohio to discover what a great opportunity

exists in their own backyard. A community with a great zoo has earned the

right to be proud: of its service to children and families, to wildlife, and to the

future we share.

Thank you for your generosity in sustaining one of the most successful

public / private enterprises in Northeast Ohio.

The Zoo is one of the most visited attractions in Northeast

Ohio, and at a fraction of the cost for a typical family outing

to an amusement park or sporting event. With .2 million

annual visitors and 0,000 member households, the Zoo

is one of the top three destinations in the region – including

for-profit venues as well as other cultural institutions.

Beyond providing a fun and educational family outing, the

Zoo and Zoo Society enhance the quality of life and fiscal

health of our region. With an impressive $85-million annual

economic impact, the Zoo and Zoo Society provide jobs,

encourage tourism and boost the local economy, as well

as generate significant economic benefits, returning $5

to the regional economy for each $ invested. As the Zoo

and Zoo Society embark on future projects, programs and

improvements, our economic impact will only increase.

2006 saw the debut of the summer’s successful exhibit –

TOUCH! Amazing Rays & Sharks. This exhibit brought

an ,000-gallon saltwater pool with barbless rays and

small sharks to the Zoo. Zoo Society members received

free admission to TOUCH! and more than ,000

members took advantage of this terrific opportunity. Kids

of all ages were able to dip their hands into the pool, feel

the smooth skin of rays and sharks and learn all about

these fascinating underwater species.

For a list of all the Zoo and Zoo Society’s generous

sponsors, see page 2.

HIGH-IMPACT SCIENCE EDUCATION

Page 7: Animals in the Zoo

7

The Zoo’s Conservation Education Department welcomes

almost 00,000 students every year to Zoo grounds and

engages another 20,000 through off-site and distance

learning programs. With such a large audience, the Zoo has

a remarkable opportunity to teach schoolchildren about

wildlife conservation and their role in ensuring the future

of the planet.

In 2006, the popular Dr. ZooLittle’s Wild Animal Show

went on the road to area schools. Converting this on-

grounds show to an auditorium-based outreach program

was a direct response to schools’ tightening transportation

budgets and teacher requests for science enrichment

programming designed for multiple grades. Zoo educators

presented more than 0 shows to thousands of enthusiastic

schoolchildren and their teachers. Funding for this valuable

expansion was secured by the Zoo Society through a

quarter-million dollar federal grant from the Department

of Labor, Health and Human Services – Funds for the

Improvement of Education.

As the Zoo strives to deliver high-impact education, it

periodically enlists outside experts to evaluate its programs.

In 2006, Dr. Joe Heimlich, professor of environmental

education and interpretation at The Ohio State University

and a senior research associate with the Institute for

Learning Innovation, comprehensively assessed the

Zoo’s education programs. His report documented the

Zoo’s tremendous positive impact and helped articulate

strategies for advancing the Zoo’s conservation mission

and serving teachers’ emerging curriculum needs. Chief

among the trends that Zoo educational programs will

address: critical thinking skills, which translate into

better workforce preparedness and a population that is

conservation sensitive.

CONSERVATION & SCIENCE

Page 9: Animals in the Zoo

An expert staff of veterinarians, researchers, behaviorists

and conservationists are the cornerstone of the Zoo’s

nationally recognized Sarah Allison Steffee Center

for Zoological Medicine. Enhanced by funds from the

Zoo Society and generous restricted grants, the Zoo’s

Conservation & Science Program is thriving.

Some of the most exciting conservation projects happen

behind closed doors in the SAS Center. Staff research

informs animal care not only for individual animals at

the Zoo, but also for populations in the wild and in other

Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) institutions. As

a result, this important work is shaping the future of how

zoos work with endangered species.

Leading zoos work to connect their conservation and

research efforts to the world at large. Annually, the

Zoo Society spends about $50,000 on conservation

initiatives, which are selected or administered by the Zoo’s

Conservation & Science staff. International conservation

grants touch all corners of the globe and strengthen

scientific understanding of some of the world’s most

threatened species.

The Zoo Society funded several in situ conservation efforts

in 2006, including the Bushmeat Crisis Task Force. The term

“bushmeat” refers to wildlife that is illegally, commercially,

or unsustainably hunted. Commercial hunting for the

meat of wild animals, including great apes, has become

the most significant immediate threat to the future of

wildlife in Africa. The Bushmeat Crisis Task Force (BCTF)

was founded in and Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is a

member of the consortium dedicated to the conservation

of wild populations threatened by commercial hunting.

The primary goals of the BCTF are to focus attention on

the bushmeat crisis in Africa, establish mechanisms for

information sharing, and facilitate engagement of African

partners and stakeholders.

The Zoo and Zoo Society are working together to

raise public awareness of the many challenges facing

endangered species — and to encourage visitors and

members to take action. The Zoo and Zoo Society

are ideally positioned to engage the general public in

meaningful dialogue about the environment, conservation

and sustainable practices.

ZOOFUTURES – LOOKING AHEAD

Page 11: Animals in the Zoo

With the support of the Zoo Society, the Zoo has the

capacity to go above and beyond the expectations of most

zoos with state-of-the-art animal care, quality educational

opportunities and worldwide conservation initiatives.

The Zoo Society has taken great strides to ensure the

future of the Zoo. Through the $2-million ZooFutures Fund,

the Zoo Society supports some of the Zoo’s most critical

conservation programs and projects both on-site and in

the wild.

The David Steffee Address is a prime example of ways

in which the Zoo Society is working to improve the future

Zoo. The 2006 David Steffee Address featured elephant

expert John Lehnhardt, VP of Operations at Disney’s

Animal Kingdom, Zoo staff members Dr. Kristen Lukas,

Curator of Conservation and Science, and Alan Sironen,

Curator of Mammals (pictured at left with moderator David

C. Barnett). These experts spoke about how important

the Zoo’s newest project, African Elephant Crossing,

is to the species as a whole and about best practices in

elephant care and conservation.

The intention of the David Steffee fund is to help the

Zoo and Zoo Society create a world-class international

veterinary program. This program encourages serious

dialogue about important conservation issues and is

generously funded by an anonymous donor. This donor

advised fund is $750,000 towards the $.5-million goal.

Throughout the year the Zoo Society introduces

audiences to the important work of the Zoo, educates

them about our shared wildlife conservation mission and

provides one-of-a-kind Zoo experiences.

The Zoo Society’s main fundraisers – Twilight at the Zoo

and ZippityZooDoo – are some of the most successful

and popular in Cleveland. In 2006, Zoo Society special

events raised $800,000 in support of our mission.

The wildly successful tasting Tails + Cocktails premiered

in 2006. Comprised of three events throughout the

year, Tails + Cocktails combines food and beverage

samplings with fun and educational behind-the-scenes

tours and presentations.

ZooKeepers’ Circle, the Zoo Society’s VIP Membership

Program, is yet another way we engage and educate

audiences. Exclusive tours are held throughout the

spring and summer and members who are at the $,000

level and above are invited to our Annual ZooKeepers’

Circle recognition event. This reception also welcomes

and thanks charter members of the Zoo Society’s planned

giving club – ZooFutures. We are grateful to these generous

supporters for including us in their estate plans.

CIVIC PARTNERSHIPS

Page 15: Animals in the Zoo

5

Together, the Zoo and Zoo Society are a leading example

of a thriving public / private partnership. Cleveland

Metroparks governs the Zoo and — through its countywide

levy — funds 60% of day-to-day operations. This stable

baseline support allows the Zoo and Zoo Society to pursue

the innovative conservation, education and community

initiatives that distinguish leading zoos.

The Zoo and Zoo Society are founding members of

Biodiversity Alliance, a collaboration with the Cleveland

Museum of Natural History and Cleveland Botanical Garden.

In its first year of operations, Biodiversity Alliance hired

a full-time coordinator, Dr. Cathi Lehn (pictured at left)

and identified several ways to work together, including

initiatives in butterfly conservation and teacher workshops.

Ultimately, the vision of the Alliance is to become a national

center of excellence for research and conservation that

models how to leverage the considerable scientific and

educational resources of the partner institutions.

The West Virginia white butterfly is a fragile species

whose future is in doubt due to forest fragmentation and

invasive plants. Biodiversity Alliance staff and partners

are monitoring the butterfly’s habitat and behavior, while

eliminating garlic mustard, the invasive plant threatening

the species’ survival.

Ohio Zoo Consortium, another successful partnership,

pools the efforts of Ohio zoos to encourage support at

the state and federal level and to build public awareness

of our conservation education programs. Statewide, Ohio

is fortunate to have five impressive zoos all working to

communicate the importance of wildlife and wild places.

THE ZOO’S BIGGEST SUPPORTER

With the largest and most loyal membership base in Northeast Ohio, the Zoo Society enhances its support for the Zoo every

year. The Zoo Society’s fundraising and advocacy programs — including Membership, ZooKeepers’ Circle, Adopt an Animal,

Memorial / Tribute Gifts, Corporate Membership and Special Events — consistently raise approximately $ million on an

annual basis, which is used to advance our shared wildlife conservation mission.

Committed to maintaining annual support for the Zoo while also raising half of all major capital improvement funds, the Zoo

Society is currently focused on African Elephant Crossing. The community has begun to embrace this important project

and, as of year’s end, more than 50% of needed funds have been committed.

In the vanguard of exhibits nationally, African Elephant Crossing brings together best practices in animal management,

conservation education and research. This strategic expansion of the Zoo’s commitment to African wildlife will transform the

entire front entrance of the Zoo, quadruple the indoor and outdoor space for elephants and position Cleveland as one of only

ten zoos in the nation with breeding capability.

Scheduled to open to the public in 200, African Elephant Crossing will serve as a point of pride for our community for

decades to come.

Page 17: Animals in the Zoo

7

African Elephant Crossing got a bit greener in

2006 with the news of a $-million grant from The

George Gund Foundation to incorporate green building

principles. The Zoo team will work with exhibit architect

CLRdesign, and local engineering firm Osborn, to

ensure LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental

Design) opportunities are maximized. Exhibit plans

include a sophisticated water reclamation system

which, despite the increase in pools for the elephants,

will save thousands of gallons of water annually. For

visitors, the central “meeting place” will feature a solar

demonstration project, while interactive education

stations and programs will invite visitors of all ages

to learn about People and Elephants Living Together: A

Delicate Balance of Survival.

In 2006 the Zoo Society’s campaign for African

Elephant Crossing received a tremendous shot in the

arm with a $-million grant from The Kelvin & Eleanor

Smith Foundation. “This gift will not only provide a more

natural and appropriate setting for our elephants and

their visitors, but will also facilitate worldwide research,

conservation, and educational opportunities,” said Smith

Foundation President Ellen Stirn Mavec.

Elephants – The Next Big Thing

“African Elephant Crossing is a worthwhile project and an important step in the Zoo’s effort to become one of the best zoos in North America. Cleveland

should not settle for anything less.” – Steve Taylor, Zoo Director

The Zoo Society received its largest-ever

corporate gift in 2006. JPMorgan Chase

announced a $200,000 pledge to the African

Elephant Crossing Campaign. The corporate

sector has begun to wrap its arms around the

campaign, thanks to championship gifts like

CHASE’s and to the leadership of the Corporate

Committee, chaired by Trustees Mike Cogan

and Dennis Burnside. “The corporate community

must embrace this project as it has huge

economic impact and educational opportunities

that will last for generations,” said Malz. Thank

you CHASE for helping lead the charge!
