Welcome to the 2018 School Year at Mano With some cooler weather, we have welcomed our 422 students to the 2018 school year. Today our 71 Prep students commenced with much enthusiasm and excitement. This year promises to be a fabulous one – the upcoming Carnivale on 28th April and our Term 4 School Concert planned for Costa Hall will certainly be highlights. Students have been very impressive with their attitudes and desire to engage with learning programs and school routines. Staff have been extremely busy setting up classrooms (both last week in their holidays and on Monday upon their ‘official’ return) and ensuring that classes are ready to begin for day 1. I thank them for this work which reflects their professionalism and dedication. Term 1 only has 9 school weeks and concludes on Thursday 29th March (Good Friday is 30th March).

New Students and Staff A warm welcome to the students who have transferred to our school for this year and we hope they can quickly orientate themselves into the new setting and establish new and positive relationships. Many of our new Prep students have siblings at Mano but many do not – a special welcome to these families as they begin a connection with our school. There are some terrific new staff who have joined us this year: * Mr Fleming (Numeracy Leader) and Ms Cameron, both in the Middles * Ms Cowdell as our Music Specialist * Vicki who has taken over as Canteen Manageress from Karina, who has moved on to full time employment * Welcome also to our 2 Pre-Service Teachers, Lauren and Maria (4th Year Students) from Deakin University

Student Supervision Before and After School Department of Education & Training policy requires our school grounds to be supervised 10 minutes before classes commence and 10 minutes after classes are dismissed each day (so from 8:50am and until 3:40pm). Staff are scheduled on to supervise the school grounds accordingly each day. Students who are at school earlier or later than the supervised times, should be enrolled in the Before and After School Care Program (contact Camp Australia, who provide this service at Mano). We inform students that if parents are running late to pick them up after school, they should report to the General Office.

Student Absence Policy All student absences from school must be explained and communicated to the school. Schooling is compulsory for children aged from 6-17 years, unless formal exemption has been sought and granted. All absences need to be explained and schools are expected to determine if the explanation provided is a reasonable excuse for the purposes of the parent meeting their responsibilities under the Education and Training Reform Act 2006. Schools must maintain

attendance records, identify and follow up unexplained absences, and develop policies to support and maintain attendance. We appreciate parents diligently informing us about all student absences and we will commit to contacting parents in cases where such contact from home has not been made. Maximising student attendance and hence achievement is the goal for all. Continuity of learning and in relationships is so beneficial for young students.

Parent Information Evenings In the third week of this term we will be conducting a series of Information Evenings for parents. These will provide greater clarity around curriculum programs and year level organisational matters – plus a chance to meet your child’s classroom teacher. Prep – Monday 12th February, Grade 1 & 2 – Tuesday 13th, Middles – Wednesday 14th, and Seniors – Thursday 15th. More details to come.

Building Program Update The refurbishment works being undertaken by Laney Constructions have progressed significantly since the end of Term 4 last year. The three Grade 1 classes have commenced this year in their ‘new’ rooms and the Junior student toilets have had a major upgrade. Our General Office and Sick Bay have been temporarily relocated to half way along the Junior corridor, as works commence in the Administration north end of this building. External painting and plumbing works are progressing well and the building’s external appearance is improving. No classes are currently needing to operate from the Multi this term. There are three entry points for the Junior/Admin building – two facing Strachan Avenue and the other via the steps adjacent to Mr Hambrook’s classroom. The toilets now do not have entry/exit doors out to the front of the school; they can only be accessed via the corridor.

Family BBQ Thursday 22nd February 5:30pm Please save the date! At the start of each year our School Council arranges a ‘welcome to the new school year’ for our community. We’d love to see you there, with an informal opportunity to mix with parents and staff over a School Council funded BBQ dinner. More details will be shared closer to the date.

Working Bee In some pretty hot weather, a Working Bee was conducted on the morning of Sunday 28th January. Lots was achieved by those who were able to join us – tidying up around the carpark, Middles and Seniors buildings in particular. The generosity of parents at Mano is greatly appreciated and is to be acknowledged. Our next scheduled Working Bee will be Sunday 15th April 9-11am (the day before Term 2 starts).

Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) 2018 CSEF is provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover to costs of school excursions, camps and

sporting activities. If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. A

special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. The allowance is paid to the school to use towards

expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child.

Parents or legal guardians are required to complete a CSEF application form and lodge it with the Office for processing.

Application forms should be completed and lodged with schools by 2nd March 2018, as payments are made from March. However schools

will be able to accept and process applications up until the end of term two each year. Contact the office to obtain a CSEF application

form.

Please ensure a copy of your means-tested concession card is provided with your CSEF application form. If you were

eligible and received CSEF in 2017, your application will rollover to 2018 and a new application form is not required to be

completed.

Art/Indonesian News Welcome to Art and Indonesian for 2018.

A reminder to everyone that students require a named Art smock as soon as possible. The best smocks have long caught in sleeves and

an opening at the back. The students can slip these smocks over their head and nothing needs doing up! We are hoping that all students

will have their own smock this year. Please see me if you are unable to source a suitable smock.

We have plenty of containers and other odds and ends at the moment but we are always looking for the smooth polystyrene/plastic trays.

They make fantastic painting palettes. I will let you know via the newsletter when we need particular items. Thank-you to all those families

who help with this.

The Victorian School of Languages provides language classes on a Saturday morning at Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College and

North Geelong Secondary College. It is part of the Education Department and lessons are available in many languages from Year 1 to

VCE. For more information Google Victorian School of Languages or simply ask me!

Our students are introduced to Indonesian during our Art lessons. Ibu means Mrs in Indonesian and over the years the students have

referred to me as Ibu Walker. Mrs Walker is also fine.

Terima kasih banyak (Thank-you very much) Ibu Walker (Mrs Julie Walker)

Student Absences Please remember to telephone the office and speak to either Jacquie or Jessie when your child is absent from school or if you are aware of a prior engagement. Alternatively you can download our SkoolBag app and fill out the online Absence form on there.
