It is a requirement that your child attend these monthly sessions in addition to attending Catholic School and/or Religious Faith Formation (CCD). If you have not registered your child to sign up for these session please contact Margie Little at 269-355-5671 or by email at [email protected].

Congratulations to Elizabeth Estkowski who received her First Holy Communion this past weekend and to all the children who also celebrated this special Sacrament this fall.

BAA 2020—Building Strong Parishes ...and We’re Getting Closer to the Goal!

Thank you for your generosity! We have raised $77,500, getting closer to our goal of $101,637! Any funds that are donated will now come back to the parish to help pay the cost of tuckpointing the exterior of the bell tower and the main church building. We need your support to reach the parish goal of $101,637. Pledges are payable through March 2021 and can be made with envelopes available in the church Connector or by visiting the diocesan giving website https://diokzoo.org/give or visit our parish website https://www.saintbasilcatholicchurch.org/giving and then direct your gift to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal.

Please contact the business office at 637-2404 or send an email to: [email protected] with any questions.

More from Thomas Merton’s “Life and Holiness”

    from Deacon John

It sometimes is amazing in reading the works of Thomas Merton how observant he was about the role of Christians and the relationship to society and the world when he, himself, lived 27 years of his life in a monastery! For instance, he observes “... that it can never be sufficient to lead a ‘Christian life’ that is confined in practice to the pews of the parish church and do a few prayers in the home without regard to the problems which affect millions of human beings…” Christian holiness “can no longer be considered a matter purely of individual and isolated acts of virtue. It must also be seen as part of a great collabora-tive effort for spiritual and cultural renewal in society, to produce conditions in which all men can work and enjoy the fruits of their labor in peace...The Christian cannot separate his life of faith from the real world of work and struggle in which he lives.”

November 2 is All Souls’ Day, or el Día de Los Muertos. It's a day for especially remem-bering our loved ones who have died. In fact, the entire month of November is a special time for prayerfully remembering our deceased loved ones.

Unfortunately, because of our need to keep people safe from COVID-19, we cannot host our usual Saturday morning breakfast after a special Mass honoring those who have died during this past year. However, the 9:00 Mass on All Souls’ Day, November 2, will be live- streamed on our Facebook page and will be viewable both during the Mass and afterward: https://www.facebook.com/StBasilCatholicChurch/ I know we won't have enough room to safely seat all of the families of all of the people we've lost this year so I recommend that most use the Facebook option to stay safe. There will also be a Mass in Spanish at 6:30 on that evening. Register for it ahead of time at https://saintbasilcatholicchurch.org/mass-times or call the parish office to help you sign up. We can also re-member our dead by spending some time in Adoration that day. Exposition and Adoration takes place after the morning Mass until about 3:00 in the afternoon. The Book of Deceased Loved Ones will also be available until Advent begins on November 29. You can write in the names of those you wish to pray for.

Another especially nice way to honor our deceased loved ones is to place their picture on the altar that Sr. Maria has set up as part of the Latino tradition. It is in the South Lobby this year to make sure that "traffic flow" remains smooth in the church at Communion. Anyone may place a picture on that altar but, since it is not supervised at all times, you may want to use only a copy of a photograph since the parish can't take responsibility for them. Sorry, no candles. That would be a fire risk.

In any case, as the Church Year moves toward its ending, and the readings bring us to think of the end of all things, let us remember that life on this Earth is not meant to be permanent, but only the beginning of eternal life. Fr. Jim

Students should watch for emails and texts reminding them of up-coming Confirmation preparation sessions.

Because of the large number of students involved in the two-year program, two Zoom sessions are being scheduled each Sunday. First-year and second-year preparation will alternate weekends, and students may choose the Zoom session they wish to attend on the appropriate weekend. One session will be held from 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. and the second will occur from 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. Each student should simply join in the Zoom meeting that is more convenient for him or her.

Invitations to the Zoom meetings will be sent weekly via email and/or text. Students or their parents should contact Sylvia Verdonk at (616) 446-5113 or (269) 637-2723, or email [email protected], to update phone numbers and email information as needed.

"Be sure that you first preach by the way you live. If you do not, people will notice that you say one thing,

but live otherwise, and your words will bring only cynical laughter and a derisive shake of the head."

Winter Coat Collection Our friends at St. Vincent de Paul in Bangor are requesting our help with a collection of outer winter wear for the less fortunate. Gently used coats, hats, mittens for children and

adults are needed, especially men’s and children’s coats. There’s a deposit station in the South Lobby for you to drop off your items. Thank you!

We wish to thank all those who contributed to the fundraising for Saint Helena’s church in Franklin, Louisiana. Your gener-ous donations raised $3,313 to assist that small church that has been hit twice, by

hurricane Laura and hurricane Delta. They will be very appreciative of our parish’s generosity!

Happy Halloween! The students really looked forward to a fun-filled Friday consisting of various Halloween activities in their classrooms. Students did some Halloween themed academics, enjoyed a bit of candy, dressed in Halloween colored clothing, and everyone had a chance to decorate a pumpkin to take home. While a bit more "low key" than past years, all enjoyed the day taking a break from the usual. Pictures to come next week!

In addition to our Halloween celebra-tion, Mrs. Villegas worked with students on creating Dia de los Muertos altars to remember those family members who have gone before us.

My 7th grade math class has been doing some practice with percent of change. Along with tracking certain stocks each day, they did some prac-tice with M&Ms, comparing colors between two bags.

Our 2nd graders have been discussing landforms and the effects of erosion. I spent some time watching them work through an investigation involving water (rain) and cornbread landforms. They were all pretty excited with the results!

Our Booster Club will once again be selling wreaths and garlands for the Christmas season. Wreaths will be availa-ble for $25 and garlands for $35. Order forms will soon be available, or you can email or call the school with your or-der. If emailing: [email protected] or call 269-637-3529. Thank you in advance for your support!

Please stay safe and I hope you enjoy the weekend! We don't have trick or treaters around our place anymore, so it's usually a dinner out kind of night for my husband and me. This works out rather well as my mom's birthday is on All Saints Day, so it will give me time to whip up a cake (okay, so more like go buy a cake...)

Thank you again for all you do!

VOTE! A sign of life from your hidden Deacon Bill.

Carolina and I are doing just fine with only a few aches and pains at our advanced age. Most of our pain is not being able to go to church, but still thankful we can virtually attend Mass and receive our Lord in spiritual communion by streaming on the internet. Thank you, Father Jim and Deacon John for your faithful service to our community.

Last week I read something on the coming election that mentioned the lack of nonviolent messages in the many negative ads and campaign speeches. I think both parties are guilty of that. Then how can we come to a positive and reasonable conclusion?

Perhaps we can by asking ourselves a few pertinent questions. As Catholics, what do we know about Catholic social teachings? How much does either party conform to that? In the gospels, Jesus teaches nonviolence, to turn the other cheek, to pray for our enemies, his preference for the poor, the widows and orphans, the vulnerable. Does our vote reflect this preference, the needs of our neighbor before ours? Which approach to our problems do we think will result in less violence and more relief of poverty and hunger? How do we think Jesus would vote, if he would be among us? I hope I have voted His way, but without telling you which side I voted.

God’s peace and blessing to you all. Deacon Bill
