ie aanwending van Angus op die kontinent verskil soms radikaal van ander dele van die wêreld, terwyl ons globaal
mededingend moet bly. Dit verg die deurlopende aanwending van die nuutste tegnologies-wetenskaplike metodes om toonaangewend met rasontwikkeling te bly.
Ons telers bly ons grootste bate en ek eer hulle vir die wyse waarop hulle dié uitdaging aanspreek. Deur getroue prestasietoetsing en DNS-bevestiging sal ons die ras se genepoelintegriteit moet verseker. Gesondheidstandaarde in ons land is onder verdenking en ons sal ons van ander moet onderskei deur onsself te onderwerp aan sodanige streng maatreëls. Ek doen dus 'n ernstige beroep op Angustelers om vanjaar die jaar van prestasietoetsing en DNA-bevestiging te maak en sodoende die grondslag vir 'n verifieerbare toekoms te lê.
Landbou moet georganiseerd fuksioneer ten einde ons toekoms te verseker. Die LNR-Stamboek-debakel bevestig die noodsaaklikheid van nouer, beter georganiseerde bande tussen die onderskeie genootskappe en verwante bedrywe soos die RPO. Samewerking op dié vlak het reeds bewese skakeling met die Nasionale Minister van Landbou, Bosbou en Seevissery bewerkstellig met oënskynlik positiewe resultate.Angus handhaaf 'n gesonde ledetoename en ons bedryf tans (saam met die Rasdirekteur, John Boulle, se kantoor) drie kantore in die Stamboekgebou om al die dagtake te hanteer en 'n puik diens te kan verseker. Die personeelkontinuïteit is verseker met die aanstel van Linette van Niekerk wat goed inpas en ek wil vir Johanna, Linette en John bedank vir die getroue wyse waarop hulle hul take vervul.
Dank aan die lede wat die raad verkies het, want met dank kan ek bevestig dat dit aangenaam is om met so 'n bekwame, ywerige span saam te werk. Tot dusver verloop, soos deur die AJV versoek, alles nog volgens plan en behoort inspeksies en veilingsbesoeke na wense betyds afgehandel te word. Tans ervaar baie van ons lede geweldige droogtes en teleurstellings, maar bly positief, want behalwe al die bates wat ons benodig om te boer, is die belangrikste die krag wat ons van Bo ontvang.

D he application of Angus on the continent sometimes differs radically from other parts of the world, while we must
remain globally competitive. This necessitates the continuous utilisation of the latest technologic and scientific methods to remain a leading role-player in breed development.
Our members remain our most important asset and I honour them for the way in which they address this challenge. Through diligent performance testing and DNA verification we will ensure our breed's gene pool integrity. Health standards in our country are under suspicion and we shall have to distinguish ourselves by subjecting our cattle to the appropriately strict measures. Consequently, I sincerely appeal to Angus breeders to mark this year as performance testing and DNA verification year while at the same time laying the foundation for a verifiable future.
Agriculture must function in an organised way to ensure our future. The ARC-Stud Book debacle confirms the necessity for closer, better organised ties between the various breed societies and associated industries such as the RPO. Co-operation at this level has already been instrumental in proven liaison with the National Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries with seemingly positive results.
Angus maintains a healthy membership growth and we currently administer (including Breed Director, John Boulle's office) three offices in the Stud Book Building to deal with and render excellent service. The personnel continuity has been assured with the appointment of Linette van Niekerk, who is fitting in well and I wish to thank Johanna, Linette and John for the faithful way in which they fulfil their tasks.
Thank you to the members who elected the council, because, gratefully, I can confirm that it makes my tasks pleasant to work with such a competent and enthusiastic team. Until now, as requested by the AGM, everything is proceeding according to plan and inspections and auction visits should be carried out timeously and as desired.
Presently many of our members are experiencing bad droughts and disappointments, yet stay positive, because irrespective of all the assets we require to farm, the most important is the strength we receive from Above.

Vir agt-en-negentig jaar reeds bestaan ons Angusgenootskap aan die Suidpunt van Afrika, sekerlik die wêrelddeel waar bevolkingsdiversiteit, innovasie en aanpassing verg om mededingend te bly.
For 98 years, our Angus Society exists at the southernmost tip of Africa, assuredly
the part of the world where population diversity requires innovation and
adaptation to remain competitive.

at die tyd meëdoenloos voorttik is 'n onomstootlike feit. Daarom kan mens jou soms net verstom dat soveel tyd
verkwis word deur argelose versuim, vertraging en verstrooidheid. Rose Kennedy se aanhaling is veral in die huidige omstandighede in Suid-Afrika so van toepassing. Dink maar aan die verlies van ure se produktiwiteit en miljoene rande se inkomste as gevolg van kragonderbrekings en beurtkrag oor ons hele land heen en die verlies en skade wat dit in soveel sektore van landbou en veeteelt veroorsaak, word 'n bykans onberekenbare syfer.
This is why, in this issue of the Journal, we are including articles that are very relevant in today's South Africa which our readers will not only enjoy to read, but might also find helpful in adapting themselves to changes in our country. We continue to have every reason to feel positive about the future, provided we do not lose faith and continue with the firm conviction that finally, good will prevail. And “good” includes this great breed of cattle: Angus.
This year, we have welcomed to our staff, Linette van Niekerk in a full-day position, who replaced Jackey Schimper who left our services late last year as a half-day employee.
Whilst we thank Jackey for many years of loyal and good service to the Society, we wish to welcome Linette to our staff.Ons bedank weer eens ons adverteerders vir u volgehoue ondersteuning van die Joernaal. Dit is al so geyk, maar so waar: sonder u sou hierdie publikasie nie moontlik gewees het nie. Dit word vir etlike jare reeds uitgegee teen geen koste vir die Genootskap nie (trouens, jaarliks teen 'n surplus) en word aan duisende Angus-entoesiaste versprei. Wanneer u hier lees, is dit reeds landswyd op alle Angusstoettelers en kommersiële Angusboere se koffietafels.

ew (if any) other beef breed has such accolades and we can be justifiably proud of our achievements despite any
assertions to the contrary, just like some popular politicians have done to certain statues which celebrate our rich and diverse South African heritage.
Growth in member and animal members is the lifeblood of our breed. Why do breeders leave other breeds and opt to join Angus? Why is it that over the past eight years, 7,7% of our membership have been dairy farmers and more pleasing, that 3% of the membership are persons involved in the A.I. industry? These astute cattlemen (and-women) must see the benefits of Angus genetics at the coalface and some are exposed internationally to the phenomenal growth of the Angus breed.
Professor Jan Bonsma said “Man must measure”, and whilst it is pleasing to enjoy such growth, our breed and its society cannot afford to rest on our laurels. We have to stringently measure (weigh) our cattle and record the advances they make. This will enhance the information feed into our data-base to benefit genomic selection. Without these phenotypically measurements, genomic selection is not the powerful tool as many would make it out to be.
F In measuring our local population, we must also compile a data bank of DNA material (principally tail hairs and/or frozen semen) along with prudent cattlemen observations such as
This unique DNA data bank with associate phenotypic recording will, in future, allow us South Africans to identify certain bloodlines that are independent of imported blood and can offer the international market a much-needed alternative in the Red Angus market. We acknowledge the fact that for instance, that certain Canadian bloodlines retain their winter-coat, an essential in the -20˚ Canadian winter. The above identified bloodlines may certainly contribute to our Angus statues in the years to come. Proudly, a South African heritage.
· Of the first cattle to shed winter coats early in spring;· First cattle to fall pregnant in a restricted breeding season;· Maintain exceptional intercalving periods (ICP) of less than
360 days;· Retain body condition throughout the winters; and· Regularly produce weaner calves of at least 45 to 50 percent
of mature body weight at weaning.
The Angus breed may be construed as a proud monument to world beef production. We can boast of the largest gene-pool in the world along with the best flavoured, fine-textured, tasty meat that
one may wish to eat.

ew other events during the year attract so much interest for this is the one occasion where members meet and greet and
discuss matters close to the core of the growing Angus industry in South Africa. The year's victories and vicissitudes, triumphs and tragedies were all shared at this event at the Afridome. It was a scintillating autumn event where bonds in an already strong fraternity of breeders with the same interests at heart were renewed.
We thank Voermol (main sponsor) and FNB (the Society's bankers) for their generous sponsorships.
The serious Society business was discussed at a well-attended annual general meeting. Guests who attended included Mr Charl Hunlun of SA Stud Book. In the introduction to his comprehensive report about the year 2013/14, Chairman of the year Adv. Hendrik Jacobs stated: “Hindsight is a wonderful thing. If we all had it, there would be no history to write about.”
At this meeting it was reported that the Society's finances were in a healthy state, with the income having increased, being higher than budget, while, conversely, expenses were were down in comparison to the previous year. The net result for the year was a neat net surplus of R121 834. From this, as well as a sustained year-on-year growth in numbers, members and breed count, for at least the past five years, it was clear that the affairs of the Angus industry in South Africa were healthy and members had reason to feel optimistic. At this meeting the new Council was elected with Mr Klasie Loubser of Vredenburg in the Western Cape, being elected Chairman and Mr Andrew Masterson, farming in Humansdorp in the Eastern Cape, as Vice-chairman. The other council members for the year were Adv. Hendrik Jacobs (ex officio, being the immediate past president), Mr RC Malherbe (Free State), Kevin Culverwell (KZN), Gary Olivier (Mpumalanga), Kevin Miles (Eastern Cape),

Flippie du Plessis (North West), Jaco Smit (Western Cape) and two additional members, Piet Delport (Schweizer-Reneke) and Louren Campher (Koster). Prof. Michiel Scholtz is the ARC representative on council, while Mrs Lexie Gradwell attends meetings on behalf of the Afrigus Club of SA, for whom the Angus Society also renders secretarial and other services.
Tydens 'n aangename, informele dinee by keurig gedekte tafels (versier in die Genootskap se tradisionele rooi en swart tafeldoeke en bykomstighede – verteenwoordigend van die kleure van die beeste) kon almal ontspan en smul aan 'n keurige aandete. Dit was tydens hierdie geleentheid dat al die jaar se pryse uitgedeel is en waarvan 'n fotobeeld op hierdie bladsye verskyn.
Die Genootskap maak jaarliks die Pat Mossop-toekennings aan kuddes wat goed gepresteer het ten opsigte van lae tussenkalfperiodes (TKPs). Altesaam 21 stoeterye het by hierdie geleentheid Goue Sertifikate ontvang vir TKPs van minder as 380 (vir kuddes met 'n minimum van 25 koeie met twee en meer kalwings). Sewe kuddes het Silwer Sertifikate ontvang vir TKPs met 381 tot 390 dae, ook vir kuddes met 'n minimum van 25 koeie met twee of meer kalwings. Hierdie toekennings word hoog geag deur die ontvangers daarvan en word tot hul voordeel in die bemarking van hulle kuddes gebruik.
At the same occasion, two young students from the University of Pretoria were awarded their prizes of R10 000 each, having won the first of its kind Angus Beef Challenge competition, launched by Angus Beef (Pty) Limited. The prizes were sponsored by Santam Insurance. The winner in the female section was Miss Tarry Attwood and young Daniel Lightley won the male student section. It was a unique competition and was circularised to most of South Africa's universities and agricultural and other similar colleges.

Once again, Parys was bustling with Angus activities and festivities when members, sellers and buyers gathered at the Afridome for the main event on the Society's 2014 calendar: the annual general meeting, the national sale and the annual prize-giving.

Nasionale Veiling
Die atmosfeer by die nasionale veiling getuig altyd van opgewonde afwagting. In die gerieflike, groot Afridome-veilinglokaal was beeste vanoor die hele land te besigtig in netjiese krale, deur die Afslaers, BKB voorsien. Alles was vroegoggend reeds op dié helder bloulugdag gereed. Kopers, verkopers en belangstellendes het groet-groet en kuier-kuier tussen die stalle rondgestap, die beeste bewonder, die katalogus ernstig bestudeer, aan warm koffie, pannekoek of hamburgers gesmul, totdat die klok gelui en die afslaer almal nadergeroep het en die sitplekke vinnig volgepak was.
Die verkopers was JM Steyn, JF Vosloo, Gert Malherbe Boerdery, Piet en Hendrik Delport, L.E. Camher, Dr Z.E. Coetzee, Fredenburge Landgoed, H. Otto, Pieter Ernst, R.B. Marriot en Mawil Stoetery.
Daar was lewendige belangstelling in die goeie diere op die veiling, maar die dier wat die tonge los gehad het, was die bul in Lot 6. Piet en Hendrik Delport van Schweizer-Reneke se Rooi Angusbul PHD 11029 – Hide-a-Way's Uprise, wat vir 'n oproer gesorg het. Daar is blitsvinnig gebie en almal het asems ingehou toe die biëry R200 000 bereik. Toe die bod op R210 000 toegeslaan is, was daar applous en 'n emosionele oomblik, toe Piet sy pragbul met trane in sy oë moes “groet”. Die koper was 'n nuwe toetreder van Kwazulu-Natal, Invermooi Angusstoet.
Hide-a-Way's Uprise, wat vir 'n nuwe rekordprys van R210 000 deur Piet en Hendrik Delport verkoop is.
Ontvangers van Goue Meriete Toekennings. Sommige lede het namens ander telers, wat nie teenwoordig kon wees nie, hul sertifikate ontvang.
