Today’s Readings

Sentence: Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.

Isaiah 2.3a The first reading is from the prophet Isaiah, beginning at chapter 2.

1 The word that Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. 2 In days to come the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be raised above the hills; all the nations shall stream to it. 3 Many peoples shall come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.” For out of Zion shall go forth

instruction, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. 4 He shall judge between the nations, and shall arbitrate for many peoples; they shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. 5 O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord! Isaiah 2:1-5 (NRSV)

Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 122 The second reading is from Paul to the Romans, chapter 13, beginning at verse 9. 9 The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder;

Page 3: Anglican Parish of Wynnum St. Peter’sstpeterswynnum.org/Documents/Pew_Sheets/2013/Dec_2013/01.12.20… · If you have difficulty in reading the screen, ... TIS 315 Mine Eyes Have

You shall not steal; You shall not covet”; and any other commandment, are summed up in this word, “Love your neighbour as yourself.” 10 Love does no wrong to a neighbour; therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law. 11 Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; 12 the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armour of light; 13 let us live honourably as in the day, not in revelling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarrelling and jealousy. 14 Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. Romans 13:9-14 (NRSV)

Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Matthew, chapter 24, beginning at verse 36. Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

36 “But about that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 37 For as the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, 39 and they knew nothing until the flood came and swept them all away, so too will be the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Then two will be in the

field; one will be taken and one will be left. 41 Two women will be grinding meal together; one will be taken and one will be left. 42 Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. 43 But understand this: if the owner of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. 44

Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour. Matthew 24:36-44 (NRSV) For the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

St Peter’s Christmas Hamper Appeal continues. Your generosity will help the needy in our local community. Envelopes are available on the Christmas Tree at the entry of the church. Archbishop’s November Appeal 2013: Assisting Ministry Development in Kenya through the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and in Leadership and Management Training in Machakos Diocese. On Wednesday The General Manager of the Diocese, Bishop Geoff Smith met with the Trustees of St Peter’s Community Service Committee Fund (Com Serve ... Because Aussies shorten everything). It was a very positive time

and I have the impression that everybody left feeling hopeful. The fund will continue to receive donations that are tax deductible. The trustees and volunteers will continue to be focused of helping those in need. The activity and work will grow and thrive. The trustees received the resignations of trustees Raye Jansen, Hugh Meiklejohn, Rosslyn Taylor. Tony Fisher was appointed as the chair of Com Serve trustees. The trustees affirmed that they wanted to continue to do everything to strengthen the bonds between Com Serve and St. Peter’s. The trustees will continue to address the governance issues but this will not effect things at the coal face. Please pray, For the volunteers as they deal

with ER (Emergency relief) applications before Christmas.

For the raising up of more volunteers

For more people to apply for No Interest loans.

Kay Voltz the manager of NILS Tony Fisher the manager of ER and

Chair of the Trustees Parish Council did a lot of things. It too had a very positive and hopeful feel. Approval was given to apply to the

diocese to have our hall kitchen renovated.

Approval was given to fund the bequest in the proportion approx one third bequest and 2 thirds grant application.

It was decided that the remaining balance of the bequest would be allocated towards maintenance budget in 2014.

Parish Council will have two

meetings in December (15 & 19th) to consider financial reports and the budget for 2014.

The policy of continuing to providing for future expenses through sinking funds was endorsed.

Parish Council is seeking nominations to fill 2 trustee vacancies for Com Serve. Please have your nominations into the parish office by 12.30 pm 13 December.

We heard how the third dot point of our parish prayer points is being answered. See page three of Prayer Corner. Please continue to pray! Its amazing how God answers payers.

We prayer gave thanks for the life of John Matthews and prayed for his family and friends.

We learnt a new hymn to sing in Compline (Prayer At The End Of The Day) because this is how we conclude out time together.

I left the meeting feeling peaceful, happy and hopeful. The best is yet to come. Thank you! SAILS at Bayside

Prayer of the week Almighty God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of

darkness and put on the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came among us in great humility, that on the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Questions to ponder as you reflect on the gospel: Imagine yourself in the midst of a scary wilderness. Imagine facing a redundancy before Christmas and not knowing what you would do. The experience of John The Baptist teaches us that God is focused on resurrection and new life. Christ teaches us that hope abounds.
