    Angles and Boxes-De Stijl, Dada, and the

    Bauhaus

    based in Zurich

    De Stijl- (Holland)

    The works avoided symmetry and attained aesthetic balance by the use of

    opposition. This element of the movement embodies the second meaning of

    stijl: a post, jamb or support; this is best exemplified by the construction of

    crossing joints, most commonly seen in carpentry. To reconcile the findings of

    Cubism to a comprehensive machine-age aesthetic that could have meaning

    for all arts, aesthetic and applied. Also called Neo-Plasticism.

    M.H.J. Schoenmaekers-mathemetician who wrote about geometry and

    neoplatonic idea of the straight line-associated with De Stijl

    Theo van Doesburg-founder of the De Stiijl movement. Van Doesburg

    was a writer, poet, and critic, who was more successful writing about art

    than working as an independent artist.

    Dada-(Switzerland, France, Germany, and USA)

    Born out of negative reaction to the horrors ofWorld War I. This international

    movement was begun by a group of artists and poets associated in Zurich.

    Dada rejected reason and logic, prizing nonsense, irrationality and intuition.

    The origin of the name Dada is unclear; some believe that it is a nonsensical

    word. The words da, da, meaning yes, yes in the Romanian language. Another

    theory says that the name "Dada" came during a meeting of the group when a

    Bauhaus (Germany)

    A school that combined crafts and the fine arts, and was famous for the

    approach to design that it publicized and taught. It operated from 1919 to

    1933. German for "School of Building".
