Good afternoon everyone and welcome to the Halcyon Wealth Longmead Stadium for our first ever league meeting with our visitors today, Oxford City. We did of course meet them twice in a cup tie a few years back but more of that in Matt’s column starting on page 8. In the meantime my welcome is extended to Justin Merritt, Andy Ballard, the players, and all connected with The Hoops and may you enjoy a safe journey home via the M25 later today.

One glance at the league table will show that it’s been a challenging start to the campaign for Oxford City and we know exactly how that feels. I don’t believe there are any poor sides in the Division, it’s simply fine margins and the ability to put away chances when they come along and this will apply to our visitors.

In any event if proof were needed of their capabilities, they have reached the 1st Round Proper of the Emirates FA Cup when they will entertain Solihull Moors at home next Saturday. At least we don’t have that distraction but nevertheless with recent changes to the management team at Marsh Lane their players will surely want to prove themselves so we can be sure we are in for a very testing afternoon.

A fortnight ago here against Chelmsford City we came so close to taking three points but ended up with nothing which was really frustrating for all concerned and would have been so valuable as we looked to climb the table and try to build some home momentum following that 5-1 defeat of Braintree Town. I suppose neutrals in the crowd would have claimed that based on the Clarets share of possession and chances created a draw would not have been an unfair result. But to be honest once the board goes up at the end of the second half and you hold the lead however slender you have to shut the game off. Whilst a couple of our players in the dressing room afterwards bravely put their hands up for mistakes at the back which led to the two goals you have to start defending from the top and we still haven’t learnt that well enough.

Once again we have gone head to head, toe to toe with a decent side, given them a tough afternoon, but have nothing to show for it. We can’t feel sorry for ourselves

however and need to keep learning how to compete against sides in non-league’s second tier.

Last Saturday we travelled to the league leaders, Wealdstone, for what was always going to be a very tough assignment. The immediate preparation wasn’t the easiest as we were short of players and could only muster two fit bodies for the bench. That is not an excuse for the defeat but rather praise to the players who started and the subs all of whom were exceptionally professional and followed our instructions to the letter. So much so that I thought we gave them at times a rather frustrating afternoon and I don’t remember Jonny Henly having to be involved in too much action particularly in the second half. Efforts from Tom Derry and Joe Turner so very nearly gave us the possibility of a share of the points but as so often happens when pushing forward in the final stages Wealdstone were able to exploit a slight gap in our defence, made the breakaway and were able to put a slightly generous gloss to the final scoreline which I didn’t think our team deserved.

I was very pleased to have secured the services of Jack Rudoni for another month and I thank all concerned at AFC Wimbledon for their support. For a 19 year old he shows great maturity on the pitch and surely has a great future in front of him.

Too late to be part of the squad last Saturday, but I was able to sign at the weekend Jason Williams (24, bottom right), a striker from Brentwood Town. Due to work commitments he didn’t get much of a pre-season but his CV which includes Southend United., Chelmsford City, Welling United, Bishop’s Stortford, and Whitehawk shows his pedigree and perhaps most importantly he has been a regular goal scorer at clubs he’s played for. Having three strikers will give me more options up front depending on the fixture and will in a sense take some of the pressure off the two already here at the club.

I was very grateful for the kind and supportive comments that were given to me and the players in the bar at Wealdstone after the game. A change in fortunes will come if we all stick together.

Good afternoon everyone from the Angels Boardroom and welcome to the Halcyon Wealth Longmead Stadium for our National South fixture against Oxford City. We hope our visitors enjoy their short stay with us and have trouble free journeys back to Oxfordshire later today. It’s also a warm welcome to our match officials who we hope all have good games.

The entire Board wish to congratulate Sonny Miles on reaching his 400th appearance for the Angels today which is fantastic in itself but remember he came through our youth system as well. We all hope you enjoy a great day and thanks for contributing so much to our club.

The 12th Man Fund was boosted by over £500 the other evening following a very enjoyable Quiz Night organised by Amy Weaver and David Brown. Steve Churcher’s team won but in true Corinthian style it’s not the winning that counts but the taking part that really matters. There are plans for another of these evenings next March so do make a point of looking out for the date and come along. It’s a very enjoyable evening.

The recent Oktoberfest Evening was also a huge success with around 300 people enjoying themselves. This was not organised by the club but of course we receive the hire charge of the Marquee and it appears that the company running the event were very impressed with the venue and are provisionally looking to come here again next year which is excellent news. Following enquiries from some of our supporters the Board will in its publicity for these events attempt to make it clear when the event is being run and organised by an outside body. The Board do listen to your comments!

Our extremely hard working Vice Chair, Amy Weaver is stepping down from the Board with effect from the forthcoming Annual General Meeting. In the three years she has been a Director, Amy has completely restructured the match day catering offer by basically bringing it ‘in house’ and therefore creating additional revenue for the club. Judging by the queues at the Tea Shack both before games and at half times suggest that you find the fare provided to your liking which of course is the biggest and most important recommendation. Amy

has also worked hard to strengthen our links with the community and has always championed the smaller local charities who often find it more challenging to raise funds compared with the national charities. For example Phoenix Autism Centre Tonbridge (PACT) which is a parent group that supports the work at Cage Green Primary School for pupils with Autism have made a number of collections at the ground and paid visits to the club meeting players etc. which the children have absolutely loved. We thank Amy for all her efforts; she will certainly be a hard act to follow, but the good news is she will be carrying on managing the catering until the end of this season. The Board will obviously need to consider what we do after that and if anyone out there has experience in catering management or just simply some ideas then do speak either to Amy or one of the Directors.

One of Amy’s last duties, if that is the right word was to describe it, was to represent the club at a workshop for young female football leaders of the future organised by the Kent FA and led by sports broadcaster and presenter Charlotte Richardson who was part of the media team for the Super Play Off at Imber Court. The event was to try and help break that glass ceiling that sometimes exists in football and which prevents the female voice from being heard. Amy may be stepping down but we will continue to have two ladies on the Board, Vanessa Yates and Sarah Parks whilst a number of other ladies do valuable volunteering work around the place. No glass ceiling at the Halcyon Wealth Longmead Stadium!

To end regrettably on a slightly less positive note, it came under notice that at the last home match against Chelmsford City there was some very bad language heard which went way beyond the grounds of common decency. Whatever the frustrations caused by events on the pitch there is absolutely no excuse for such language and if anyone is caught whether they be home or away supporters the strongest possible actions will be taken by the Board. This is a family club with lots of young children present, let’s keep it that way.

Enjoy the game in the right manner.

Today we welcome Oxford’s second biggest club, twelve years after knocking the city’s biggest club, Oxford United, out of the FA Trophy.

Oxford City were the original football club in Oxford, being founded nine years before Oxford United, who are currently in league one. They were founded in 1884, joined by Headington United in 1893, the latter becoming the side we now know as Oxford United. However football in the city dates back further than that with the university’s football club dating back to the 1870s, and they indeed won the FA Cup ten years before Oxford City was even founded.

In the early part of the 20th century, Oxford City were one of the top non league clubs in terms of FA Cup success, reaching the last 32, equivalent to the fourth round proper, in 1902, and winning the FA Amateur cup in 1906, beating Bishop Auckland 3-0 in the final in a snow storm.

The club continued playing during the second world war, producing a number of players who would go on to be full time professionals, although the club itself then struggled for results and almost lost their Isthmian league status in the 1950s, but the 1960s saw an improvement, reaching the FA Cup first round five years running, reaching the quarter final of the FA Amateur cup, and winning the Oxfordshire Senior Cup.

In 1988 they were evicted from their ground, which they had played at since the year 1900, but recovered to win promotion through the Isthmian Leagues and in 2012 they won promotion to step two for the first time in their history. This wasn’t National League South though, this was National League North, so it involved several long trips. A few years later geography helped them and they were switched to National League South, where they have been ever since, finishing 12th last season.

This season has started with more of a struggle for The Hoops. The first two and a half months of the season saw them win just two league games, at home to Hampton and away to Bath in August, although they have had success in the FA Cup where wins over North Leigh, Hampton and Richmond and Margate have given them a place in the first round proper next weekend. This isn’t unfamiliar territory for Oxford City as two years ago they reached the first round and for the first time in their history they beat league opposition, knocking out Colchester United.

FA Cup form has certainly had a positive impact on the Hoops, as they have taken maximum points from their two games this week, defeating Slough Town 2-1 on Saturday then following that up with a 2-0 win over Dorking Wanderers on Tuesday night to move up to 15th position.

Oxford City’s most famous former manager is one Bobby Moore, who was appointed in 1979 with Harry Redknapp as his assistant. Temporarily in charge at Marsh Lane is general manager Justin Merritt, who has had a previous spell in charge of the team between 2014 and 2016, following the departure of Mark Jones by mutual consent last month.

Their goals have been spread out a bit this campaign but they look just as likely to score from midfield as anywhere else on the

pitch with Kyran Wiltshire and Nana Owusu possibly their main goal threats. Owusu joined the club from Maidenhead United in the National League but it was while he was at Basingstoke where he was spotted by Mark Jones.

With Owusu providing support out wide, the strikers on the club’s books are Craig Fasanmade and Stefan Brown, and their most recent signing is Elliot Benyon, who joined the club earlier this month. He’s played in the football league for Torquay, Swindon and Wycombe and adds experience to the club’s front line.

Other midfield players at Marsh Lane include Zac McEachran and Josh Ashby. McEachran rejoined the club two seasons ago after a spell at Banbury United while Ashby made his move permanent the summer before last after a loan spell from Oxford United two years ago. Another player to watch in the centre of the park is Reece Fleet, a former Solihull Moors player who has featured more than 100 times for the Hoops.

Perhaps the best known player at the back for Oxford City is Ben Jefford, who’s played

for Welling United and Sutton, and was in the Forest Green squad who won promotion to the football league, while you may also recognise Tarik Moore-Azille, who’s featured for St Albans, Bishops Stortford and Margate and has already scored more than his fair share of goals this season, and Joe Oastler, who is the club captain and won the man of the match award in their FA Cup win over Margate. Finally in goal is Craig King, who joined from Luton in January 2018.

This is our first ever league game against Oxford City, but it’s not our first meeting. We were drawn together in the FA Trophy in 2004, with the Angels coming out on top after a replay. In the original tie here at Longmead we drew 1-1 here. Gareth McCleary gave Oxford a 27th minute lead but Brendon Cass levelled for us seven minutes later. Cass would then turn out to be the hero of the replay the following Tuesday, scoring a hat-trick in a 4-2 win after Danny Lye had given us a third minute lead. A report from that match follows on Page 10.

Following a draw that neither side could argue with on Saturday, Tonbridge had another bite of the cherry against their lowly opponents on a freezing evening in front of a very low attendance. The Angels obliged with a more than comfortable win, setting up a 3rd round home clash against Walton and Hersham.

The visitors’ intentions were clear right from the word go when young goalkeeper Lee Farrow fumbled a cross, allowing Danny Lye to open the scoring. Tonbridge continued to dominate and had the better of the play and on the quarter of an hour mark, Anthony Hogg was tripped inside the area after some silky skills down the left hand side. Brendan Cass struck the ball firmly, sending the keeper the wrong way to double the lead. The home sides’ defence were somewhat absent and on the 22nd minute a drilled cross from John Farley was not defended properly allowing Cass to poke home his second of the night. Oxford’s problems worsened when Farrow again fumbled a high looping ball from Andy Larkin and when trying to recover the situation brought down the lively Cass giving away the second penalty of the night. But Cass’ spot kick

was drilled straight at the keeper who saved easily. Oxford did get a consolation goal just before half time when a corner was poorly defended. Striker Gareth McCleary was on hand to punish them. Oxford City were getting more and more into the game with Colin Simpson getting more into the match. He fired a shot from 25 yards that was tipped over by Jamie Turner. From the resulting corner the referee booked Simpson for trying to kick the ball out of the goalkeepers hand, with this being Simpson’s second bookable offence he was shown the red card.

The second half started with both teams trying to gain the upper hand. However, the visitors were the first to succeed when a long ball over the defence found Cass who lobbed the ball neatly over the indecisive keeper, completing his hat trick.

City struggled to keep the ball with a reliance on the long ball, but a brief moment of brilliance came midway through the second period. The dynamic McCleary made a terrific run down the left flank and delivered a superb cross into the box finding the unmarked Mark Simms to head into the net. The game closed out with the Angels having numerous chances through Luke Piscina, Hogg and Lye. With the result wrapped up, manager Tony Dolby introduced three youngsters, Tom Reeves, Tom Fuller and Matt Hollyoak to the match, giving them some experience.

FORMER ANGELS FAVOURITE HANGS UP BOOTS AT 28Injury calls time on Luke Blewden’s career

Luke Blewden has announced his retirement due to injury. He said via Facebook: “I’ve been playing in pain for the last few years and a scan has shown a lot of knee damage (arthritis and other issues) to the point I need to wear a knee brace for the foreseeable future. I’ve also been told to give up football otherwise I will need a knee replacement before 35.”

Always a favourite at Longmead, Blewie constantly gave 100% every time he played and was just simply a really decent bloke both on and off the pitch. He had three different spells with the 1st team making a total of 115 starts with a further 73 appearances from the Bench and scored 34 goals.

Thanks, Luke for everything you gave to this club and may you have a great future whether inside or outside the game.

OPPOSITION VIEW - CHELMSFORD CITY

“Chelmsford piled on the pressure in the final few minutes and it paid off, with two stoppage time strikes ensuring City took all three points back to Essex in dramatic fashion.”

PLAYER’S VIEW - KHALE DA COSTA

“We’re all gutted. The boys worked so hard, all of them put in a great shift, and to then lose like that is heartbreaking really.”

19

MANAGEMENT VIEW - BARRY MOORE“Everyone played so well, Jonny made some vital saves and two horror moments have lost it. It’s hard to describe, some players have held their hands up and good on them. Frustrated to say the least.”

FAN’S VIEW - HARRISON PARKS“The first half Tonbridge were good but Wealdstone showed their quality. The tables turned in the second half; we were all over them but couldn’t find the right finishes to get any points.”

PLAYER’S VIEW - JACK PARTER“Considering we’re at opposite ends of the table I think we made a good account of ourselves. I don’t think their penalty should have stood, but we kept our heads up and gave them a good game. ”

23

MANAGER’S VIEW“In the first half we played pretty well considering the slope. The second half we came out of the traps well after half time and showed real fight, restricting them to a long ball game.”

when Paul Bates was felled in the penalty area after 81 minutes that it looked all over. Wade Falana put away the penalty, but the home side gave themselves hope a minute later with a goal before the referee pointed to the spot once more to deny the Angels their three points.

PART 7: DAVE ARTERAppearances: 125 +43 Goals: 86

Dave Arter joined Tonbridge for the 1987-88 season after beginning his career with Ashford Town and Herne Bay and in that single season,

making a total of 56+1 appearances, he found the net a total of 32 times. At the end of the season, Arter returned to Ashford where he struck up a potent partnership with Jeff Ross that eventually culminated in a move to the then moneyed Hythe Town for a combined fee of £20,000. After two seasons at Reachfields he moved on to another club with money in their pockets, Sittingbourne, before moving back to Ashford, along with Ross, in 1994 for a fee of £7,000. Arter played for a further four years at Homelands before returning to Longmead after racking up a club record 197 goals for the Nuts and Bolts. In a three season spell for the Angels he added another 54 goals from 69+42 substitute appearances.

St Leonards were founded in 1971 by employees from the Sussex Turnery And Moulding Company under the company name of STAMCO. They were admitted into the Eastbourne & Hastings League for the 1971-72 season and by 1977 had progressed to the Premier Division.

For the 1982-83 season Stamco joined the Southern Counties Combination, winning Division Two in their first season. Within the next three seasons the club had won two Premier Division Championships and were promoted into the Sussex County League in 1988. In 1992-93 they won promotion into Division One as runners-up.

Their first season in Division One they reached the semi-finals of the Sussex Senior Cup, and in the following two seasons they finished runners-up to Peacehaven & Telscombe winning promotion to the Southern League for the 1996-97 season. However, before being accepted into the Southern League, the league required that the club, who were by now playing at The Firs, changed their name to reflect the club’s geographical location. At the same time, National Lottery

jackpot winner, Mark Gardiner, joined forces with Stamco’s chairman, Leon Sheppardson at the helm of the club. A new club name, St Leonards Stamcroft FC, was chosen. This satisfied Dr. Martens League requirements and marked the financial input of Mark Gardiner, whose local business was called Croft Glass. The 1996-97 season saw the club finish runners up to Forest Green and win the Sussex Senior Cup, beating Saltdean United.

Two years later, in 1998, with Mark Gardiner having left the club, Leon Sheppardson stepped down as club chairman. Having lost the services of two millionaires, the 1998-99 season marked the beginning of a new era for the club. A further name change took place, this time to St Leonards FC.

The club were relegated following their only season in the Premier Division and struggled financially. During the 2002-03 they resigned from the Southern League and returned to the Sussex County League for 2003-04, however mounting debts caught up with them and they folded during the season.

Tonbridge Angels surrendered the opportunity of going top of the Doc Martens Southern League Eastern when they relinquished a two goal lead in the final eight minutes of their game at The Firs, home to St Leonards.

Tonbridge supporters could be forgiven that they were on the verge of a victory against a side that results have always come with the greatest of difficulty, but St Leonards pulled themselves back onto level terms with a penalty deep into stoppage time.

The Angels never really got a grip on the match played with a swirling wind and an uneven playing surface and looked particularly vulnerable at corners and from one of these went behind after 16 minutes.

But, despite this, the Angels went into the break leading with two goals through an Ian Gibbs header after 27 minutes and Dave Arter on the stroke of half-time.

Tonbridge had plenty of chances to take control of the match in the second half but it was only

MY MATCHDAY: SONNY MILESWHAT’S ON THE MENU FOR YOU PRE-MATCH?

To be honest I don’t have anything in particular, I normally eat what ever the kids are having for breakfast. Then something light around 12ish.

WHO DO YOU TRAVEL TO HOME GAMES WITH?

I normally travel in with Liam Smith, he makes a good taxi driver, terrible play lists though.

WHAT DO YOU DO ON THE COACH TO KILL TIME ON A LONG AWAY DAY?

I generally just try and relax and have a bit of a laugh. A decent coach journey can be the difference between a win or a loss.

DO YOU HAVE ANY PRE-MATCH SUPERSTITIONS?

I always prepare my left side before my right for some reason. I also go and see Melv and Tina before we enter the tunnel.

WHAT’S ON YOUR PRE-MATCH PLAYLIST?

Anything you can understand, some of the music the boys play is horrendous!

WHAT IS THE BEST GROUND YOU’VE PLAYED AT AND WHY?

Probably Wrexham when I was at Maidstone in the 2nd Round of the FA

Cup. Was an amazing experience.

AND THE WORST?

There’s been a few, I’d probably say Ashford Middlesex when we had to go there on a Tuesday night in FA Trophy I think it was. It was horrible.

WHAT IS YOUR EARLIEST FOOTBALLING MEMORY?

I had a great youth team, growing up with Colin Blewden and being coached by him was great. We was successful as a youth team so that always helps.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE RULE IN FOOTBALL WHAT WOULD IT BE?

The offside one where a player has to make intention to go for the ball. As a centre half you could be forced to head the ball off when really you don’t have to. As a defender you can’t afford to take the chance of him being on or offside.

WHAT’S YOUR BEST MOMENT IN A TONBRIDGE SHIRT SO FAR?

Last season was special, the group, the dip in form we had around Christmas etc to come back and get promoted was amazing.

BEST MOMENT IN YOUR CAREER SO FAR?

To go far in the fa cup and get promoted in the same season at Maidstone was special for me. Your children being able to watch their dad live on television was great for them.

WHO IS THE BEST PLAYER YOU’VE PLAYED ALONGSIDE IN YOUR CAREER AND WHY?

Arthur Lee, was a Rolls Royce kind of player he had everything, pace, ability and the game always looked easy for him. I’ve been lucky to play with some

great centre-halfs, I must mention Ben Judge too.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE ANGELS CHANT?

I like them all! Anything they sing behind the goal to get behind the team really makes a difference.

WHO IS YOUR ALL-TIME FOOTBALLING IDOL AND WHY?

I never really looked up to anyone as I was growing up, I loved watching Neil Harris at Millwall when he was scoring loads of goals and we got promoted from the 2nd division I had a season ticket then and went to most away games.

WHICH TEAM’S RESULTS DO YOU LOOK OUT FOR AFTER THE GAME?

Millwall. They’re the ones I support along with Tonbridge!

OUTSIDE OF FOOTBALL WHO IS THE FIRST PERSON YOU SPEAK TO AFTER THE GAME?

My wife normally, although she tends to ignore me if we have lost!

NAME ONE THING YOU’D STILL LIKE TO ACHIEVE IN YOUR CAREER?

To get Tonbridge to a 1st round of the FA Cup. We always seem to fall short!

Wealdstone have maintained a strong lead at the top of Vanarama South, securing a 3-1 win against Tonbridge last Saturday while the sides closest to them all slipped up.

Hemel Hempstead Town remain in second place despite only picking up a single point against Eastbourne Borough. It was Sports’ fifth away draw of the campaign and while they have only won once on the road, they have proved difficult to break down. Liam Nash gave the Tudors the lead before Greg Luer replied for Borough.

Weymouth move into third spot after backing up a 3-0 defeat of Braintree Town last Saturday with a useful 1-1 draw at Eastbourne on Tuesday night. Jake McCarthy was the hero at the weekend scoring two of their goals, Ben Thomson providing the other. McCarthy was again on target in midweek, this time from the penalty spot, taking his season tally to six.

Slough Town suffered something of a surprise defeat at today’s opponents Oxford City. George Wells had given them a half-time lead but Zac McEachran immediately responded at the start of the second half before Eddie Jones produced the winner for Oxford. The Berkshire side recovered from this setback on Tuesday night to defeat Welling United 1-0, courtesy of a 74th minute winner from Ben Harris.

We continue to wait for pre-season favourites Havant & Waterlooville to put a run together and challenge the leaders, and perhaps their win last weekend will get their season on track. The evergreen Danny Kedwell gave them the lead against Concord Rangers, and although they were pegged back midway through the second half by a Billy Roast leveller, the three points went to the hosts thanks to Sam Magri’s winner. Havant are back up to fifth place now but stay ten points off the leaders.

It’s been a miserable week for Dorking Wanderers who lost twice without scoring. Bath City took all the points thanks to a single goal from Adam Mann on Saturday before Wanderers were well beaten on Tuesday night by Oxford City 0-2. They stay in the play-offs but with a negative goal difference and a queue of clubs are in line to overtake them.

Completing the play-off places are Maidstone United who will be satisfied with

a four-point haul from their two games this week. Ibby Akanbi and Justin Amaluzor scored for the Stones in a 2-1 defeat of Billericay Town on Saturday and then Iffy Allen scored in a 1-1 draw at Braintree Town on Tuesday night. It was very nearly six points out of six though, with the Iron equaliser arriving in injury time through Josh Urquhart.

Hungerford Town return to the foot of the table after a home defeat against Hampton & Richmond Borough. Charlie Wassmer opened the scoring for the Beavers - his first since arriving at the club from Billericay Town - and Danilo Orsi-Dadomi doubled the advantage late on.

St Albans City lifted themselves off the basement position and out of the bottom two with victory at Welling United. Albert Adu scored the only goal at Park View Road.

Five Vanarama South clubs have pocketed a minimum of £36,750 for reaching the alien world of which Angels fans are mostly unfamiliar - the FA Cup First Round Proper, and four of those have been rewarded with home ties.

Dulwich Hamlet, who knocked out our conquerors Eastbourne Borough, have seen their tie with Carlisle United selected for live television coverage, as a result their match has been brought forward to this Friday evening. Also at home are Maidstone United against Torquay United, Oxford City against Solihull Moors and Chippenham Town v Northampton Town. Meanwhile Billericay Town make the trip to Forest Green Rovers. Good luck to all of our sides next week.

As well as the changes at today’s visitors, Eastbourne Borough have also parted ways with their manager since our last notes on these pages. Lee Bradbury was only appointed in the summer, but has left the club on what are described as “entirely amicable terms”. But at the same time club officials announced that a £40,000 shortfall is needed to be closed in the next month. It appears that a major backer had been expected to invest a significant sum in the club in the summer but this did not materialise once the clubs’ budgets had been decided. The first playing casualty of these events has been Elliott Romain, who has left Eastbourne and signed for Dartford.

CRYSTAL PAL FTA 3 TONBRIDGE ANGELS 5 Wed 30 Oct – National League U19 Alliance

Tonbridge Angels Academy maintained their 100% record with a 5-3 victory against Crystal Palace Community but manager Tommy Parkinson was less than impressed with his side’s last 15 minutes when the foot came off the pedal whilst 4-1 up.

Parkinson explained after the game that his side had, too often this season, played in patches and they need to learn to be consistent both as a team and individually over the full 90 minutes. Despite this, for 75 minutes, the Angels’ youngsters dominated the game and were, ultimately, well deserving of their fourth straight win in the National Academies’ Alliance.

Tonbridge went in front after eight minutes when a ball pumped into the box brought a misjudgment from the Palace goalkeeper who called for a ball that he had no chance of collecting. Ned Lewis was first to the ball and his header was looped over the advancing Mason Whitnall and into the unguarded net.

On a narrow pitch at Catford Wanderers, Sam Babayale’s long throws into the box were causing chaos in the Palace defence with one throw managing to find its way through to striking the far post. Harry Hudson headed wide from a Babayale throw before, after 23 minutes, an exquisitely curled shot into the top corner from Lewis doubled the Angels advantage.

With Crystal Palace barely threatening, Tonbridge had further opportunities to extend their lead. Lewis headed over from the umpteenth Babayale throw and Louis Copeland shot into the side netting before the home side surprisingly pulled a goal back after 35 minutes when their burly striker, Nathan Medley, scored with a shot into the top corner from 20 yards.

Tonbridge’s dominance was restored at the start of the second half when Saul Musengeyi’s shot-cum-pass found Copeland at the far post to net from a tight angle.

The Angels put the game virtually out of reach of their hosts after 56 minutes when a free kick lofted into the box by the excellent Ben Twist was met with a header from Hudson to make it 4-1.

Lewis narrowly shot wide and Hudson headed a Babayale free kick wide before, after 76 minutes, Medley once more showed the quality of his left foot with a shot from which Angels’ goalkeeper, Charlie Martin, might well have done better.

Any real concerns were dispelled with seven minutes remaining when Musengeyi was sent clear to finish into the bottom corner but it was the Palace striker Medley who had the last say when he completed his hat-trick with a free kick into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Whilst he bemoaned his side’s final quarter-hour, Parkinson praised his side’s earlier performance when they “had some spells with good quality, scoring some nice goals”. The Angels maintain their position at the head of the table alongside Welling United who also have four wins out of four.

In the Kent Youth League the Angels’ Under 14s side suffered defeats at home to AFC Mottingham which particularly disappointed manager Steve Turner, going down 2-1 with the goal scored by Hayden Velvick. Last Sunday, they suffered a heavier defeat, this time by 5-0 at last season’s champions and this term’s league leaders Glebe, but gave a very good account of themselves.

Dominic Welsh’s Under 15s maintain their massive improvement from last season’s trials and tribulations. In the League against Lordswood, they took a point from a hard-fought 1-1 draw with a penalty from Fin Wolvey. Last Sunday, in the County Cup, they ruthlessly disposed of Tecnica Football scoring a dozen times in the process. Goals from Finn Hartley (4), Isaac Barden (3), Charlie Gilbert (2), Max Lambert and an own goal. It is an interesting statistic that shows the excellent progress from the Under 15s that last season from 21 games they only managed to score 17 goals whilst this season’s first eight games have produced a massive 36!

The Under 16s’ misfortunes continue unabated as they slipped to a 3-2 defeat against Kennington in the County Cup. Angels goals came from Toby Henley and an own goal.

Directions by Road

Leave the M4 at Junction 14 and take the A338 towards Hungerford. On entering Hungerford you will find a roundabout where you take the second exit towards the Town Centre and Marlborough (A4). At the next roundabout take the first exit continuing towards Marlborough and then at the next roundabout take the first exit towards Town Centre/Salisbury (A338). Continue straight on passing through the town centre and after about one mile turn left at the mini roundabout onto Priory Road (signposted Town Football Club). Then take the third left into Bulpit Lane. After going straight ahead at the crossroads you will reach the ground entrance on your left (by the children’s playground). There is little parking available at the ground itself, but there is plenty of on street parking available in the local area.

By Rail

Hungerford Railway Station is located around three quarters of a mile from Bulpit Lane or around a 15 minute walk. It is served by trains from London Paddington, which operates an hourly service on Saturday afternoons.

On leaving the train station walk up to the Railway Tavern pub. Turn left at the pub and at the top of the hill turn right then first left into Fairview Road. Continue up past Hungerford Primary School and the One Stop shop on your left, then take the second left into Bulpit Lane. The entrance to the ground is a short way down on the left.
