DAVAO CITY (June 16) Mayor Rodrigo Duterte an-nounced an additional P300,000 reward, bringing the total boun-ty to P500,000, for informa-tion leading to the arrest of the gunman in Fridays killing of businessman and hotelier Richard King.

Duterte announced the cash bounty after conferring with local police officials on develop-ments in the murder case.

The King family had put up an initial P200,000 reward and Duterte offered to provide the rest of the bounty.

Duterte said investigators are looking into several possi-bilities to establish the motive behind the killing.

It is still too early to say anything. Let the authorities look into it first, he said.

Police said the killing could have been triggered by business rivalry or personal grudge.

Investigators are also look-ing into the phone records of King.

Everyone thought the gun-man was a relative or a friend of one of the consultants of Vital C health products, who had just completed their training that night.

King was attending the grad-uation of the consultants when the gunman walked in and shot the businessman with a .45 automatic.

The gunman was seen hang-ing around the glass doors of the building along Sobrecary St. in Barangay Obrero while King was talking with his consultants during the gathering.

The gunman casually walked out of the building after the shooting and got on a waiting motorcycle.

Police are also looking into Kings business dealings.

Aside from Vital C products, King also owns the Crown Re-gency Hotel along Cabaguio Avenue here.

King also headed the J. King & Sons Co. Inc., developer of Crown Regency, Club Ultima and the City Suites Ramos Tower in Cebu City.

King was also the founder and director of Boracay Mul-tiple Properties Inc. that es-tablished the Crown Regency Boracay Resort.

Duterte condemned the killing and vowed to solve the case.

Former Manila mayor and Rep. Lito Atienza of party-list group Buhay also denounced the spate of killings in the country.

We call on Local Govern-ment Secretary Mar Roxas and Philippine National Police chief Allan Purisima to immediately act on the countrys peace and order situation, which seems to be disintegrating before our very eyes. This breakdown in law and order is a pattern that we are seeing not just in Metro Manila but also across the coun-try, he said.

Atienza was reacting to the King murder, the mayors being shot in their hometowns and the latest killings of two media men in Oriental Mindoro and Digos, Davao del Sur.

He said the certainty of arrest is the best deterrent to the commission of a crime. (Philstar)

MANILA - Its business as usual for the Philippines and China on trade and investment matters despite their maritime row, although Manila is not very confident about reaching the $60-billion target on two-way trade by 2016 as agreed upon by President Aquino and then Chinese president Hu Jin-tao in 2011.

    Doubling of trade to $60

billion is based on their num-bers of $30 billion as starting point. Our numbers starting point is $12 billion so the target is $24 billion. I do not have the statistics with me right now but we will likely fall short of target, Trade and Industry Secretary Gregory Domingo said in a text message through Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary

may be taking a more cautious stand so in that way there might be slower growth. Tourism with Chinese is way up though, Do-mingo said.

Aquino and Hu witnessed the signing of the agreement on the five-year development pro-gram for trade and economic cooperation in Beijing.

In his speech during the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Inc.s joint celebra-tion of the 116th Philippine Independence Day and 13th Filipino-Chinese Friendship Day on June 10 in Manila, Chinese ambassador Zhao Jianhua said China is now the third largest trading partner of the Philip-pines and that in the first quar-ter of this year, two-way trade reached $12.5 billion. MANILA (June 16) - Despite territorial stand-offs between China and other nations bor-dering the South China Sea (renamed West Philippine Sea by the Philippine government), analysts say governments know better than to choke off the trade shipping routes that are the lifeblood of their econo-mies.

The escalating disputes this year between China and some of its neighbors over their rival territorial claims in the sea have led to water cannons being fired in one hotspot area and deadly anti-Chinese riots in Vietnam.

The Philippines has also sought military help from the United States in the face of what it calls bullying Chinese tactics, signing a pact that will soon allow thousands of US troops onto Filipino bases fac-ing the sea.

The worsening rows have inevitably raised questions over whether they will impact the seas shipping lanes, which are among the busiest in the world and see more than half of all oil tanker trade flow through them.

But analysts believe all na-tions involved, particularly China, will ensure that the dip-lomatic and military maneuver-ings do not jeopardize such an important economic lifeline.

Its not in Chinas interests, and its not in the interests of Japan, South Korea or Taiwan, to have some sort of blockade or disruption, said Jayendu Krish-na, a Singapore-based analyst with industry consultancy firm Drewry Maritime Services.

MANILA (June 16) - Presi-dent Aquino will most likely submit his proposed national budget for 2015 to Congress after his State of the Nation Ad-dress (SONA) on July 28.

Budget Secretary Florencio Abad has told The STAR that the administration intends to keep the tradition it has started of submitting the budget pro-posal to the House of Repre-sentatives and the Senate a day after the SONA.

This gives lawmakers enough time to scrutinize the proposal and approve it before yearend, he said.

The President presents his proposed spending program to Congress through his budget secretary.

Based on Abads memoranda to state agencies, Malacaang is eyeing a P2.606-trillion na-tional budget for next year. The issuances contain indicative budget ceilings.

In his memoranda, Abad discussed the general thrusts of the planned 2015 outlay.

Through the 2015 budget program, he said the govern-

ment would again try to attain inclusive growth through such programs as cash transfers to the poor, K to 12 basic educa-tion, universal healthcare and housing for squatters.

The budget would also be designed to help the govern-ment steer the economy to growth through infrastructure development, pursue good governance and anti-corrup-tion programs and minimize disaster risks to prevent loss of life, property and livelihood, he said.

Despite last years succes-sion of calamities, he said the government remains opti-mistic that it would attain its economic targets, on which the 2015 budget proposal is broadly based.

Next years planned outlay is P341 billion more than this years P2.265-trillion spending level.

The administration hopes to fund it with revenues projected to reach P2.337 trillion, leaving a deficit of P285.3 billion, which would be funded through bor-rowings. (Philstar)

MANILA (June 16) - Now that criminal cases have been filed against some of those linked to the pork barrel scam, the public should remain vigi-lant to help make sure the guilty are punished and made to ac-count for the billions of stolen taxpayers money.

Presidential Communica-tions Operations Office Sec-retary Herminio Coloma Jr. made the appeal yesterday on behalf of President Aquino while stressing that it would be up to the Supreme Court (SC) to decide whether to allow the creation of special courts in the Sandiganbayan to try the ac-cused, who include three sena-tors and other officials.

He (President Aquino) trusts that the citizens will keep faith in their government and maintain their vigilance in the quest for justice, Coloma said.

He said the government, through the Department of Jus-tice, had judiciously gathered evidence to justify the filing of plunder and graft cases against those linked to the scam.

He said the filing of the

cases was in keeping with the Presidents commitment to strengthen public institutions through good governance.

We note the filing of the cases and the assignment by raffle of such cases to specific divisions of the Sandiganbayan. Those cases were filed based on evidence that were gathered and thoroughly investigated. The issuance of warrants of arrest against the accused shall be based on the rules of court, Coloma said.

Coloma gave the assurance as the administration continued to parry accusations that it was singling out three opposition senators for prosecution.

Senators Juan Ponce Enrile, Jinggoy Estrada and Ramon Revilla Jr. are facing arrest for the non-bailable offense of plunder. The three senators and several others are being accused of skimming millions of pesos from their Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) in con-nivance with businesswoman and suspected scam master-mind Janet Lim-Napoles. PDAF is the official term for the con-gressional pork barrel. Philstar

By December, it had a per-manent population of 1,443, which can sometimes swell by 2,000, according to the Sansha government. Now it has an airport, hotel, library, five main roads, cellphone coverage and a 24-hour satellite TV station, according to the government. It also has its own supply ship that brings in food, water, construc-tion materials and people.

Tensions in the area have es-calated since China last month placed an oil rig in waters about 30 kilometers (20 miles) from the Paracel Islands, leading to ongoing sea confrontations be-tween Chinese and Vietnamese vessels. On Sunday, the Philip-pines announced it had recently protested a land reclamation by China in the McKennan-Hughes reef in the disputed Spratly Islands in the South China Sea. In April, Philippine officials protested after discovering Chinese vessels had reclaimed a large patch of land in Johnson South Reef, also in the Spratlys. Philstar/AP

ippines, US President Barack Obama said that the US com-mitment to the Philippines under a longstanding defense treaty is iron clad.

Obamas words, however, were still found ambiguous and lacking clear guarantees for the Philippines as it is embroiled in a maritime dispute with China over areas of the South China Sea. Ryan said that the US, in its pursuit to become a leader in Asia Pacific, should decisively stand for freedom, justice and the rule of law through concrete actions, such as in building up its forces in the western Pacific parallel to Chinas.

We supposedly made a pivot to Asia, but we didnt leave much of a footprint. The numbers speak for themselves: Just under 3,000 Marines are on rotation in Australia. Just four littoral combat ships are to be based in Singapore. With numbers like these, our allies wonder, if theyre in a pinch, will America be there? Ryan said.He urged Washington and foreign policy players to help Chinas neighbors in the region to stand up on their own against the rising Asian power. Philstar

coreThank you again for reading and I hope these exercises can help you im-prove your posture, ease your low back /shoulder pain and maintain daily body movements.

I hope you had a chance to try the lower body exercises from our last issue. If you are new to the exercises and are willing to add them to your daily routine, give yourself enough time to learn the proper technique. If you want to see results, you must per form the exercises consistently. You are on a nice treat because in this issue we will work on core strengthening exercises.

What is core and why is i t impor tant?

Core consists of various muscle groups surrounding the trunk area of the body minus the arms and legs. The impor tant core muscle groups are rectus abdominus, ex ternal and internal obliques, transverse abdominus, pelvic floor muscles, shoulder stabilizers and glutes muscles. You dont have to memorize the anatomy terms but basically, they are the muscles of the abdomen, low back, shoulders and hips.

These muscles function is to stabilize par t of the body to generate power, maintain func-tional posture, needing for shock absorption and required for dy-namic movements. When and if the core muscles are weak, people run into low back pain, hip pain, shoulder pain, poor posture and even a messed up pelvic floor. Its impor tant to keep the core strong to maintain normal body function and to minimize injuries. Here are 4 beginner core streng thening exercises you can star t doing on your own.

THE celebration of Filipino heritage and how immi-gration from the Philip-pines to Canada has enriched our social and economic well-being here in Canada is always a topic of discussion in June. People from all over Canada and, in fact, around the world, acknowledge the importance of June 12 to the Philippines.

On the floor of the House of Commons in Ottawa on June 13, 2014, I made the following statement:

Last Saturday I participated in a flag raising ceremony at the Philippine culture center in Winnipeg. The ceremony signaled the beginning of a week-long celebration of Fili-pino heritage and pride.

It was on June 12, 1898 in Cavite when the Filipino people witnessed the public reading of the Declaration of Indepen-dence. The national flag was also unveiled along with the singing of the new Filipino na-tional anthem.

Yesterday our Philippine Canada Friendship group host-ed a special event to mark the importance of June 12 and I especially enjoyed seeing the young children dressed in their

Across Canada, you will find that there are politicians at all levels of Government and all

political parties that would have reflected

on and, in many cases, spoken about

how better we are as a nation because of the

heritage attire. The Philippines is a beautiful

country, a place where I have been on many occasions. My desire is to see an expanded re-lationship between Philippines and Canada.

To MPs representing all areas of Canada, I would chal-lenge this chamber to not only recognize the many achieve-ments and contributions that the Filipino community has made to our great nation but to also encourage members to con-sider the potential if we were to build upon that relationship.

On behalf of my Leader and caucus, I stand to acknowledge 116 years of Philippine Inde-

pendence and say to my kabay-ans and friends let us celebrate our diversity and treasure our heritage.

I was not the only MP that addressed the significance of Philippine Independence. MP-Mark Adler from York Centre did, too, when he stated: Mr. Speaker, today I am pleased to welcome a delegation of Filipinos from across Ontario to Parliament Hill to celebrate the 116th anniversary of the Philippines independence. The visit was marked by the flag of the Philippines being raised on Parliament Hill as songs were sung and children danced.

THERES a proposal worth considering: the Commission on Elections has suggested the inclusion of voter education in the college curriculum. The move, according to Comelec officials, will not only educate students about the electoral pro-cess as they prepare to vote for the first time, but also about the importance of making informed choices.

The Comelec is supporting a bill filed at the House of Repre-sentatives, which seeks to make voter education compulsory in schools. The youth may even have suggestions to improve the electoral process and prevent the many problems that bedevil Philippine elections.

It is said that people get the government they deserve. This starts with making informed choices during elections. Filipinos have to stop sending lazy, incompetent and corrupt people to public office.

Informed and vigilant voters can help prevent vote-buying, cheating, violations of campaign fund regulations and the many other practices that undermine elections. People power in a democ-racy is manifested through the vote. This power must be wielded wisely if Filipinos want democracy to work.

Vigilant voters can compel transparency among candidates in connection with their campaign donors and expenditures. Politi-cians have resisted all attempts to pass a comprehensive campaign finance law.

Any administration that is focused on fighting corruption, however, should give priority to regulating campaign finance. The seeds of corrupt deals are often planted during election cam-paigns, with donors cashing in their chips when their candidates win. Young voters may have suggestions on how the public can identify campaign donors who want to stay in the shadows.

An informed electorate is a crucial component in fighting cor-ruption and improving governance. Creating this kind of electorate is best started in school.

Voting is an important part of responsible citizenship. Youths must be sufficiently prepared to exercise their right of suffrage properly. (Philstar)

ONE father had a three-year-old daughter who was having trouble sleep-ing through the night. Shed of-ten wake up several times in the night because she was afraid. Each time as he re-tucked her into bed, he would remind her that Jesus was with her and he would keep her safe.

Several nights in a row, she did this over and over again. Finally, one night, the dad asked her if she had prayed to Jesus to take her fear away and help her fall asleep. Oh, yes, she assured him. I prayed to Jesus and He told me to come and get you!

In our lives, there are many times when were afraid. Were afraid because were in trouble. Afraid because were being threatened. Afraid because were about to lose something we care about.

And sometimes we become afraid because we know weve done something wrong and were pretty sure were going to be punished for it. Its at time

A good father makes sure his kids know

where the fences are. A good dad needs to be a disciplinar-ian. He needs to be firm and consistent. He needs to draw the lines in the sand and be willing to punish children for crossing

    those lines.

    Godly Fathers

like that when we most need a father figure to step into our lives and help us. Protect us. Because intuitively, everyone understands that the father of a family should protect us when were afraid.

The people of Israel have become afraid. Theyve sinned against God. They sinned be-cause - without asking for Gods permission or approval - they decided to reject Samuel as their leader and they demanded

a King just like all the other na-tions had.

Theyd rejected Samuel as their leader. But even more, theyd rejected God. So Sam-uel rebukes the people and at Samuels request God sends a powerful storm filled with thunder, lightning and rain. The people heard Samuels words of rebuke. They saw Gods power to punish. And they begged Samuel to pray for them.

IT was so hard to distinguish sex nowadays. Do you re-member when men were men and you could tell it by looking, when women were the ones who wore earrings and makeup? Do you remember when men knew who they were and had confidence in them-selves and in their God? They knew where God was leading them, and trusted Him to get them there.

Maybe the problem today is that our modern society has tried to convince women that they can be as masculine as men and men that they can be as feminine as women. So we have put them together in one big mixing bowl and mixed them all up until many are no longer sure what their role really is.

Happy Fathers Day to all fathers out there. Fathers Day presents us with an opportu-nity to look at masculinity once again. Not the Rambo type who walks with a swagger and cusses like a sailor. Such men probably make bad neighbors and poor business partners and abusive fathers and husbands.

Im talking about a man who knows he is a man and is proud of that. But at the same time he has a soft and tender heart that is sensitive to others and to the will of God. Im talking about Gods man. Im talking about fatherhood the way it ought to be.

In 1 Thessalonians 2:7-12, Paul says, we were gentle among you, like a mother car-ing for her little children. We loved you so much that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well, because you had become so dear to us. Surely you remember, brothers, our toil and hardship; we worked night and day in order not to be a burden to anyone while we preached the gospel of God to you.

You are witnesses, and so is God, of how holy, righteous and blameless we were among you who believed. For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children, encouraging, comfort-

ing and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into His kingdom and glory.

PROP. Let me suggest that in these few verses 5 wonderful traits of a father today.

    I. Loving.

    A. The first trait of a father would be the ability to express genuine love. Notice what Paul says in vs. 8, We loved you so much. In the original language those words expressed an inten-sity of love that gives over and over again. Paul says, Its hard even to find words to express how much, but we really do love you.

I think that is an important character trait for fathers be-cause loving and expressing love does not come naturally for most men. Im convinced that is the reason the Bible tells husbands to love their wives, because we have to learn how to love.

The Bible almost never tells wives to love their husbands because that usually comes naturally for them. Instead, wives are told to respect their husbands, because sometimes that is hard to do.

Men, most of us have to learn how to love. That is true about the father and child rela-tionship, too. It doesnt usually come easy for us.

ILL. Do you remember when you brought your first child home? Your wife seemed to know what to do. She knew the head was heavy and that the muscles had not developed in

the neck to support it. So she supported it. She also knew that the soft spot on top of the head was a place of vulnerability and you had to be really careful about it.

She knew when the baby was hungry, and when its dia-per needed to be changed. And she changed it with skill. She knew when it was bath time and play time and sleep time. She knew all those things.

But we men had a lot to learn. When we first held the baby, at least for many of us, it was an awkward experience. I didnt know when the baby was hungry, and when the diaper needed to be changed. And I was not very skilled at changing diapers, either. All those things had to be learned.

But soon we get to the place where even if were not so good at them, we kind of enjoy them. We enjoy holding our children and expressing love. We enjoy playing with them, watching them laugh, and then comfort-ing them when they are in distress.

    B. Then what happens? They grow up, and just about the time you get good at it, it all changes.

When was the last time you said you love them?

    II. LIVING A TRANSPAR-

    ENT LIFE

The second trait is a trans-parent life. Paul writes in vs. 8, We loved you so much that we delighted to share with you not only the Gospel of God but our lives as well. Now notice that there is a connection between gospel and lives. It is one thing to hear the gospel. But it

is another thing to live it. What Paul is saying is,

When we lived among you we not only told you the good news, we modeled it for you by how we lived.

It seems to me that if youre a Christian dad, your kids ought to know it by the way you live. For example, being a Christian will affect the decisions you make every day. The values in your home will be different than those found in a pagan home.

Un-Christian home values things like pleasure and power and prestige and possessions. But in a Christian home, we learn that things we cant see, things we cant buy, and things we cant hold on to, are really the most precious. We have completely different values.

What about stress? Would you deal with stress differently if you were a Christian dad than if you were not? I think you would, because there is a peace available to you that the world doesnt understand, a peace that passes all understanding.

What about finances - how you budget your money? Wouldnt that be affected by how the gospel has changed your life and made you into a different person? What about humor and joy and laughter - all the things we find in a home influenced by the gospel?

Men we need transparency, and thats hard to deal with. But I think kids need to see in us fathers, not just an authority figure, but someone who is real, someone whose heart has been touched and changed, who still makes mistakes and yet has the courage to admit that he has made those mistakes.

    III. AN UNSELFISH DILI-

    GENCE

Heres a third trait an unselfish diligence. Paul says, You remember, brothers, our toil and hardship; we worked night and day in order not to be a burden to anyone while we preached the gospel of God to you [1 Thessalonians 2:9].

Now I think we have a re-sponsibility as parents to teach a good work ethic to our chil-dren. And oftentimes, if our kids dont see a father who is a hard worker and who has a good work ethic, theyll never learn it.

We teach it in two ways. First, we teach by example, by just doing it and letting our children see that. Secondly, our children learn by doing. We give them the opportunity to do things and make their own mistakes and learn from the mistakes they make.

    IV. GENUINE FAITH

Fourthly, the trait of genuine Faith. Paul said, You are wit-nesses, and so is

God of how holy, righteous and blameless we were among you who believed [Vs. 10].

Now notice what he said, First of all, we preached the gospel of God to you. Secondly, you are influenced by what we believed about Jesus.

God has commissioned dads to be spiritual leaders. And youre the spiritual leader of your home whether you realize it or not. You will either lead your family closer to God or further away. But as a Christian, it is your responsibility to lead them closer to Him. If you dont, youll be leading them closer to the evil one and his kingdom.

As spiritual leaders our responsibility is to show that we are genuine, that our Chris-tianity is not just something for Sunday, but something we are all week long.

So if you come to church and carry your Bible and look very pious on Sunday, but you never open it through the week, your kids will know. Theyll be

So it is absolutely essential that we be genu-ine, and that our children see that we not only worship here but that we worship at home. We not only read the Word of God here, but we read it at home. We not only

pray here, but we pray every day of our lives. And they see the genuiness of our faith.

CAMPAIGN LINE: The four-year trajectory of the political rhetoric of the Aquino administration indicates that the line for its presidential campaign in 2016 is likely to hew to the anti-corruption theme kung walang korap walang mahirap (no corrup-tion, no poverty).

It is not difficult to show to the masses the connection be-tween their misery and official corruption and then blame it on the opposition. The pitch in 2016 is likely to be: Elect the Anointed One of President Noynoy Aquino to continue his reform program.

Reinforcing the line with the Blame Game formula, the Yellow brigade had caught the attention of the masses wal-lowing in undeserved poverty, by blaming the scarcity of jobs and opportunities on what it said was the corruption in the previous administration.

That line might just work again for the ruling Liberal Partys presidential nominee

We long to see the day when Filipinos are able to fish again at Panatag shoal off Zambales, when the island town of Kalayaan in the Spratlys ceases wor-rying of an alien takeover, and when Filipino and Chinese technicians drill together for gas and oil.

Corruption to remain top poll issue in 2016

who at this stage looks like DILG Secretary Mar Roxas.

    ***SEARCH FOR LEGACY: One

other reason why the anti-cor-ruption line has to be put to work again in 2016 is that after four years of wandering in the desert without a road map, the administration still cannot find a solid accomplishment to point to with pride.

The Palace has been search-ing high and low, far and wide, for some kind of legacy that President Aquino can leave when he exits two years from now. No solid achievement has been found.

Glowing statistics cannot hide the reality of millions be-ing jobless and hungry, skilled

workers forced to seek a more promising future abroad, small businesses diving below the radar screen of tax collectors, human life costing less than the price of a motorbike.

With no ready remedies to apply, the administration takes the line of least resistance of blaming corruption, pinning it on others and creating a false faade of pretending to grapple with the monster.

    ***STATS & TROPHIES: On

July 28, expect President Aqui-no to decorate his State of the Nation Address with glittering economic statistics supposedly resulting from his anti-corrup-tion campaign.

He is likely to display such

trophies as former President Gloria Arroyo, senators Juan Ponce Enrile, Jinggoy Estrada and Bong Revilla, and former Chief Justice Renato Corona.

Never mind that these key targets (except for Corona) have been convicted only in the public mind and not with final-ity by the courts. Never mind, too, that there are still many big fat Yellowfins swimming around without charges being filed against them.

Note that last June 12, Presi-dent Aquino worked into his Araw ng Kalayaan speech in distant Naga (why did the Commander-in-Chief stay away from the capital on that red-hot day?) the theme of corruption sapping the nations viscera.

It is also interesting that his appointee, Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, wove the same corruption thread into her speech that day at the Agui-naldo shrine in Kawit, Cavite.

    ***BACKLASH: One risk is that

the kung walang korap walang mahirap line concedes that the main gut issue remains to be the economy. On this score, the Aquino administration and its presidential nominee in 2016 could end up being defensive.

A possible backlash of an anti-corruption line is the ob-servation that marami pang mahihirap dahil talamak pa rin ang korapsiyon (poverty is still widespread because of runaway corruption).

The reality is that at least a third of Filipinos are languish-ing below the poverty line (al-though it has been lowered so that more people can float sta-tistically above it). In the poorer sections of the national capital

Is i t possible for a woman to conceive twins wi th dif ferent fathers?

This is the at tention-grabbing premise of The Half Sisters, GMA Networks newest drama series currently airing on the Networks flagship international channel, GMA Pinoy TV.

The Half Sisters explores the phenomenon of hetero-paternal super fecundation, which is the successive fer tilization of two or more ova from the same ovulation cycle by dif ferent sires. This is made possible by separate suc-cessive acts of sexual intercourse

resul ting to one woman bearing twins with dif ferent fathers.

This controversial soap opera stars Kapuso teen actresses Bar-bie For teza as the kind, diligent and obedient Diana Alcantara, and Thea Tolentino as the spoiled, conceited and manipulative Ashley Alcantara. The series also features seasoned actress Jean Garcia as Rina Mercado-Alcantara, the dot-ing mother of Diana and Ashley; multi-talented actor Jomari Yllana as Benjamin/Benjie Valdicaas, the ex-boyfriend of Rina and the biological father of Diana; and versatile actor Ryan eigenmann as

Alfred Alcantara, the hardworking biological father of Ashley and the husband of Rina.

Playing opposite the teen ac-tresses are the Kapuso Networks up and coming leading men, Der-rick Monasterio as Baste Torres, a working student who will be Dianas close friend; and Andrei Paras as Bradley Castillo, the rich, good-looking school jock.

In the series, Rina (Jean) be-comes pregnant wi th t wins, one sired through copulation with her husband Alfred (Ryan) and the other one sired when she was raped by her former boy friend

Benjie (Jomari).Benjie is sent to prison for his

Meanwhile, Alfred is having doubts on the paternity of the chil-dren and demands Rina to undergo DNA testing. The results confirm the occurrence of hetero-paternal super fecundation, wherein Rinas twins have dif ferent fathers - Diana by Benjie and Ashley by Alfred.

Af ter Benjie is released from prison, he begins managing their family business which eventu-

Prompted by financial woes and obligations, Alfred asks his daughter Ashley to pretend to be the biological daughter of Benjie so that his daughter can live a more comfor table life, thus, rob-bing Diana of her bir thright as the right ful heiress.

We tried out a couple from their ex tensive menu and I am so excited to get you to also try most of what we had ordered. Most Vietnamese restaurants have this Vermicelli noodle, but theirs seem ex traordinary. Their #30 is the V i-Ann Special Vermicelli and consist of spring rolls, chicken,

grilled pork, shrimp and meat balls as toppings with special fish sauce on the side, then #63 Deluxe Can-tonese Chow Mein which has lots of vegetables, BBQ Pork, Chicken and Beef (new on their menu and a must tr y, since noodles are deep fried), their #121 Deluxe Pad Thai you can have i t with Chicken, Beef and Shrimp (also new on their menu) the #126 Crispy Chicken Combo- yummy chicken with friend rice, fried egg roll and veggies,#134 Satay Beef (in sizzling plate) - and their famous #139 Deluxe Seafood Birds Nest (shrimp, squid, crab meat and mussels). With their serving, your $10 will leave you with a happy tummy.

Oh and dont miss to order from their wide array of Bubble Tea flavors- which they first originated

here in Winnipeg. With their bubble tea, mostly of what they use are fresh frui ts. Weve tried the Taro and the Avocado and i t is soooo good, coz they made use a real fresh Avocado fruit.

What makes the dining experi-ence here that much bet ter than some others in this category is the owners; they really take pride in their food and i t shows. Staf f would walk around engaging the tables, and asking what they think of the taste, which makes i t more of a homey feeling.

One thing Ive found about V ietnamese restaurants is that theyre all about the atmosphere. The owner and the staf fs personal touch to each and every customer and the restaurant i tself makes the experience ex traordinary.

My verdict was not just based

A MOUTH-WATERING World Cup showdown takes place in Salvador on Monday, as Germany take on Portugal in Group Fs clash of the titans.

After winning nine and drawing one of their 10 qualification matches on the road to Brazil, Joachim Lows men are 23/20 (2.15) favourites with Paddy Power to justify the hype by recording a big opening win.

A Selecao, on the other hand, only qualified for the tournament via the play-offs and are 11/4 (3.75) under-dogs to cause an upset here.

There have been no draws in any of the last four competitive meetings between these sides, but you can get odds of 9/4 (3.25) on them sharing

the spoils at the Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova.

Having suffered defeats against these opponents at three of the last four major tournaments, Paulo Bentos team must have breathed a sigh of resigna-tion when the draw was made for this years group stages.

However, their chances of meting out some sort of revenge would be vastly improved by the presence of talisman Cristiano Ronaldo, who is hoping to start on Monday despite his recent injury problems.

The Real Madrid man missed two of the warm-up matches but returned to help his country to a 5-1 victory over the Republic of Ireland in the

final friendly, an ominous sign for a German team going through a minor defensive crisis.

With first choice left-back Marcel Schmelzer ruled out through injury and regular right-back Philipp Lahm potentially needed in midfield due to fitness concerns surrounding Sami Khedira and Bastian Schweinsteiger, Die Mannschaft may line up with an unfamiliar defence made up of four centre-backs.

Considering their impressive front-line struck six goals in their final warm-up match, Lows team may therefore decide that attack is the best form of defence against a team that have put five past both Cameroon and Ireland

    in recent fixtures.W i t h

an enter- t a i n i n g match surely on the cards, odds of 6/5 (2.20) seem extremely generous on over 2.5 goals being scored, in a bet that would have paid out in three of Portugals last four and a convincing 35 of Germanys last 42. (Al HAin-Cole/GoAl.Com)

NEW YORK KNICKS star Carmelo Anthony is leaning toward leaving in pursuit of immediate championship contention, and awaits the Chicago Bulls and Houston Rockets to clear the necessary salary-cap space to sign him in free agency, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

As re-signing with the Knicks continues to fade as his priority, Chicago and Houston have emerged as the clear frontrunners to acquire Anthony, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Anthonys meeting with Knicks officials on Friday night had little impact on his state of mind, league

sources said, because there remain too many uncertainties about how quickly president Phil Jackson can reshape the team into a champion-ship contender.

Chicago and Houston front-office executives are working diligently on contingencies to clear the space to sign Anthony outright or engage sign-and-trade scenarios with New York, sources said.

His heart is in New York, one source familiar with Anthonys think-ing told Yahoo Sports, but he wants a chance to win now.

Jackson has turned off Anthony with his public proclamations of

wanting the seven-time All-Star for-ward to take less money to stay with New York, league sources said.

Around Anthony and the NBA, theres some doubt about whether Jackson truly wants to keep him on a five-year, $120 million-plus extension, or simply is giving the appear-ance for public relations sake. Jackson has been somewhat cavalier in his public dec-larations of wanting Anthony to stay, and its been noticed.

JUNE 5, 2014 - KING Edward School students, their families and other local residents can now enjoy a redeveloped com-munity meeting space, and more exercise and recreational opportunities on the new play-ground in the school yard, Chil-dren and Youth Opportunities Minister Kevin Chief, minister responsible for the City of Win-nipeg, and Mike Pagtakhan, city councillor, Point Douglas, announced today.

I am so proud of the work our community has done to create a new playground that encourages fitness, recreation and thinking beyond school walls, said Minister Chief. The design of this playground honours the culture of the neighbourhood and provides a place for students, friends and families to gather. By working together, we have turned a plain field into a playground that provides opportunities for fun physical activity and a place to find belonging.

Joint funding from the Prov-ince of Manitoba and the City of Winnipeg through the Building Communities Initiative (BCI) II provided $100,000 for improve-

ments to the school playground. The City of Winnipeg also supported the project with a $33,000 commitment through the Community Incentive Grant Program.

The development of the King Edward School play-ground is a huge success story of collaboration, innovation and community pride, said Pagtakhan. I am proud the city played a leading role to ensure this fantastic play area became a reality for young people in the community.

The new school grounds now include an early-years play space with sand area boulders, wiggle walls, balance/climbing logs, distributed play structure equipment, a stage and amphi-theatre to support the arts, a berm with a built-in slide, a half basketball court, a paved fitness loop for cycling, rollerblades and strollers, a family picnic area, new hard-top area, a re-sodded playing field, electrical service to the stage and four LED light posts to enhance site safety.

We are so fortunate in Can-ada to have so many Canadians of Filipino descent. In fact, my riding of York Centre has one of the largest Filipino communities in Canada. It is a community of great warmth, strong family values, and hard work.We wel-come them all to our Canadian family. This was demonstrated no better than when Typhoon Yolanda struck the Philippines, devastating the country with substantial loss of life. Fami-lies were uprooted from their homes. Canadians and our government immediately rallied behind our Canadian Filipino family, with financial assistance to the tune of $170 million. It is a testament to the Filipino community that so many Cana-dians of all ethnic backgrounds donated to help their Filipino friends and neighbours.

On behalf of the residents of York Centre, my greetings to your Araw ng Kasarinlan.

Across Canada, you will find that there are politicians at all levels of Government and all political parties that would have reflected on and, in many cases, spoken about how better we are as a nation because of the Philippines.(www.mpkevin.ca)

our children see that we not only worship here but that we worship at home. We not only read the Word of God here, but we read it at home. We not only pray here, but we pray every day of our lives. And they see the genuiness of our faith.

    V. A MAN HAS A POSITIVE INFLUENCE

Finally, there is the trait of positive influence. Paul writes, For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father

deals with his own children, encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into His kingdom and glory [Vs. 12].

That is what a father does. He encourages and comforts and urges his children to live lives worthy of God. And its all positive. (Rev. Ruel Calitis Camia is Senior Pastor of Win-nipeg Unida Christian Church. Cell number 204 8070329/email [email protected])

to the LORD your God for your servants so that we will not die, for we have added to all our other sins the evil of asking for a king.

And, in the midst of their fear Samuel reassures them that he WILL pray for them. And not only does he vow to pray for them but he does several things that day that a Father would do for his children.

Actually, Samuel had always been a father figure to Israel. One of the basic responsibilities for a loving father is to be the disciplinarian. Hebrews 12:9 tells us we have all had hu-man fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it.

Good loving fathers set the standard of right and wrong in their homes and they are willing to be the bad guys if they need to be because the future of their children can depend upon their decisions not just for this life, but also for eternity.

A study was done about 10 years ago and it found that conservative Christian parents whose parenting style could be described as authoritarian raised some of the most well- adjusted kids.

A researcher named Wilcox examined data from the Na-tional Survey of Families and Households discovered that the homes of conservative religious parents were characterized both by strict discipline and an unusually warm and expressive style of parent-child interac-tion.

He found that most conser-vative religious parents were authoritative, which he de-scribed as having consistent and firm discipline as well as high levels of warmth and pa-rental responsiveness.

In other words: the dads in these homes set a firm pattern for what was not acceptable, and they were more involved in their childrens lives.

Several years back Dr. James Dobson reported the findings of a study done with school children. A group of educa-tors decided to remove the chain-like fences from around the school playgrounds. They believed the fences promoted feelings of confinement and restraint. The curious thing they noticed, however, that as soon as the fences were removed, the children huddled in the center of the playground to play. Conclusion: Children need boundaries.

A good father makes sure his kids know where the fences are. A good dad needs to be a disciplinarian. He needs to be firm and consistent. He needs to draw the lines in the sand and be willing to punish children for crossing those lines.

But now, there IS a danger for dads who practice this ap-

itself, a large number of house-holds scrimp or skip meals, with a few of them thriving on scrap or pagpag (leftover snatched from garbage).

Juxtapose this picture on the fact that billions in taxpayers money are routinely stolen from an unconstitutional pork bar-rel or disbursed with amazing acceleration to private pockets and the corruption looms even bigger.

    ***CHINA CONDEMNED: Re-

acting to the Chinese reclama-tion and construction of out-posts in disputed areas of the South China Sea, a US State De-partment official said Tuesday these actions are an affront to the multilateral Declaration of Conduct that China had agreed to follow.

Daniel Russel, chief of States bureau of East Asia and Pacific affairs, said in Burma that Chi-nas occupying uninhabited land features was going far beyond what a reasonable

person would consider with the maintenance of the status quo.

He said: The status quo as applied in 2002 when the ten ASEAN countries and China reached an agreement on a Declaration of Conduct that clearly and explicitly committed themselves to exercise restraint, to avoid occupying uninhabited land features, and to para-phrase to keep things as they were.

    ***THINKING ALOUD: Rus-

sel resonates with our Post-script last June 12 wherein we thought aloud if only there could be some kind of what we call a courts TRO (Temporary Restraining Order) binding China and the Philippines while talking of having more harmo-nious relations.

We went one step further and suggested despite our knowing its being not feasible a return to the status quo ante, meaning for the two countries to move back their pieces on the watery chessboard to where they were at an agreed date in the past.

Those suggestions were made out of desperation, see-ing how China kept ignoring our attempts to move to the bargaining table while it was gobbling bit by bit the fringes of Philippine territory.

***WE SAID: We long to see

the day when Filipinos are able to fish again at Panatag shoal off Zambales, when the island town of Kalayaan in the Sprat-lys ceases worrying of an alien takeover, and when Filipino and Chinese technicians drill together for gas and oil.

To work out such an agree-ment resembling a TRO of sorts, however, Manila may have to enter into direct bilateral talks with Beijing contrary to the US formula of multilateral bargaining possibly through the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

There is also the question of what to do with the United Na-tions arbitration initiated by the Philippines at The Hague. China can be expected to demand the dropping of arbitration if the Philippines wants direct nego-tiations. (Philstar)

proach. In being a firm disci-plinarian its possible for them to forget to love their children. Fathers can become harsh and even insulting in how they treat their kids.

Ephesians 6:4 warns: Fa-thers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

Colossians 3:21 says: Fa-thers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged.

There are dads in this world who see it as their goal in life to hold their children under their thumb. But God would prefer that we hold our children under our hearts.

Fathers should tell their children: God loves you. He doesnt want to reject you. In fact, you bring Him pleasure. Thats the kind of love a good father reflects to his children. They say to their children: I love you. I dont want to lose you or reject you. In fact, you bring me pleasure.

Being a good father goes be-yond what we SAY. It strikes at the very heart of what we DO.

If you dont walk the walk, your kids wont listen to you when you try to talk the talk.

Fathers should be able to say to their kids Ive got blind spots. I can make mistakes. Point them out to me so that I can ask your forgiveness and so I can make it right. We should illustrate the value of being transparent with our kids.

Samuel tells Israel: As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD by failing to pray for you. And I will teach you the way that is good and right. (I Samuel 12:23)

A good father is a spiritual leader in his household. Prov-erbs declares Listen, my sons, to a fathers instruction; pay attention and gain understand-ing. I give you sound learning, so do not forsake my teaching. (Proverbs 4:1-2)

God expects us to pray for our kids (grandkids/ nephews/ nieces). He expects us to teach them the way that is good and right. Our kids will know when we pray for them. Theyll know when we are walking with God. If you live your life for Jesus your children receive a spiritual blessing that will last long after you die.

God wants to bless your chil-dren because of your choices. He wants you to be able to give a spiritual inheritance to your children that will last long after youve died.

ABS-CBN Corporations campaign to re-store and reintroduce classic Filipino films to current audiences proved to be world-class af ter i t won an Award of excellence at the international Gold Quill Awards 2014 that honor communication excellence worldwide.

ABS-CBN head of Content Management Group, Film Archives & Special Projects Leo Katigbak received the prestigious award from the International Association of Business Com-municators during the IABC Gold Quill Awards Gala held in Toronto, Canada.

Its a totally new level of excellence. We are very proud to be par t of the winning roster of outstanding global campaigns and represent the country alongside other Filipino winners, he said.

ABS-CBN Film Archives advocates the restoration of Philippine classic films and the showcasing of these films to the current generation of Filipinos wi th the intention to raise appreciation and suppor t for Philippine cinematic masterpieces. It first ventured into restoring films in October 2011, in par tnership with Central Digital Labs, for the Ishmael Bernal

masterpiece Himala.Af ter the successful restoration of the clas-

sic film, Himala was then promoted to the general public using a 360-degree marketing communication campaign where i t aired on free-to-air television and on cable, had a red carpet cinema premiere, was screened at the prestigious 69th Venice Film Festival, was released internationally on pay-per-view via Global TV, and was distributed commercially on DVD. The same marketing campaign was applied on the other films restored by ABS-CBN Film Archives namely Oro, Plata, Mata and Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon?

These three films capture the countrys social milieu at cer tain periods of our history. It is not only imperative for us to preserve them, but also to restore them in digital format for a wider appreciation by audiences today and tomorrow, he said.

According to Katigbak, the restoration proj-ect will go a long way as i t targets to restore more Filipino classic films in the coming years such as Virgin People, Hindi Nahahati Ang Langit, and Karnal.

Prior to winning the Gold Quill, ABS-CBNs film restoration of Himala also won a Philippine Quill Award, the inter-national awards local counterpar t given by the IABC Philippines, and the Anvil

What is the most valuable lesson about life and love has your

father taught you?MJ: My dad taught

me that true love exists. Despite our distance and

the distance between us while I was growing up, my father always showed his care and love through the

sacrifices they endured. It was a long distance

father-daughter re-lationship but that did not take away from the quality of his love. Love has no boundar-ies indeed.

MJ LASTiMoSALessons beauty queens learned from their dads

Kris: By now, everyone would have known that it was my dad that encouraged me to join the pageant and go for the crown. That is one of the lessons in life that my dad taught me while he was alive to enjoy, give my all to everything I do and live life to the fullest. I am glad that I took his advice.

Yvethe: My dad taught me to think before you act. He stressed that every decision we make will always have an effect not only to ourselves but also to the people around us. According to him, although it is okay to com-mit occasional mistakes, thinking things thor-oughly before doing an action would steer me from costly blunders in life. He always told me to be considerate at all times.

Hannah: My father has this impregnable faith in God. The most valuable lesson I learned from my father is to trust God at all times. No matter how hard life gets, he told me that God would always have a greater plan that will turn around the situation. That has helped me in coping with the twists and turns that life has offered.
