History of the IMechE

• Est. 1847 to recognise engineering excellence. George Stephenson first president.

• Created due to the boom in Mechanical Engineering in Britain following the advent of the railways and industrialisation.

• Received a Royal charter in 1930.• Now over 100,000 members worldwide.• Licensed by the Engineering Council to Assess candidates for

inclusion on ECUK’s register of professional engineers.

• The Engineers’ Careers Guide will be distributed to all Final year students at the start of the academic year.
