ANDREW (“DREW”) ERDMANN
Andrew “Drew” Erdmann is a Principal with McKinsey & Company’s Washington, D.C. office.
He works with public sector defense, development, and intelligence organizations, often at the
intersection of economics and national security. He has extensive experience operating in fragile
and post-conflict states, including Afghanistan and Iraq. He is a leader of the McKinsey Strategy
Practice’s Global Forces Service Line, where he focuses upon the implications of long-term
trends shaping the international business and economic landscape. He also has experience in the
aerospace and defense, high technology, retail, and basic materials industries.
Between 2001 and 2005, Drew served in the U.S. Government as a member of Secretary of
State’s Policy Planning Staff, Senior Advisor to the Ministry of Higher Education & Scientific
Research in Iraq, and, lastly, Director for Iran, Iraq, and Strategic Planning on the National
Security Council staff at the White House. He has also taught international affairs at Harvard
University and George Washington University, and written on U.S. national security policy in
The New York Times, The American Interest, and other publications. He has served as a
consultant to the U.S. Army, the Department of Defense, and the Department of State, as well as
an expert advisor to the Baker-Hamilton Iraq Study Group.
After receiving his first B.A. from Williams College and then a second B.A. from Oxford
University as a Carroll Wilson Fellow, Drew received an A.M. and Ph.D. in history from
Harvard University. He is a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a member of
the International Institute for Strategic Studies.
