WSET stands for Wine and Spirit Education Trust. They are a non-profit training organisation that is owned and operated by the wine trade for the development of wine in the trade. The qualifications are overseen by Ofqual, the UK government body for creating nationally recognised qualifications. The WSET courses are part of the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QFC) and are recognised as credits in many other national qualifications.

The WSET qualifications are run throughout the world from America to China, India to Italy and are recognised in many countries. In the UK the WSET forms the backbone of the wine trade.

WSET was founded in 1969 as an educational charity by four organisations to train people in the British wine and spirits trade. The four founding companies are The Vintners Company, The Worshipful Company of Distillers, Institute of Masters of Wine and the Wine and Spirit Association of Great Britain.

Initially the WSET was set up solely to train the trade. However in 1991 the charter was changed to allow the general public to study for WSET qualification. Now globally, roughly 20-25% of people taking their courses are consumers
