On this day he geared up the oxen’s and cart, telling his wife andfamily he was going to the blacksmith shop in the ridge (near where the FreewillChurch of Christ now stands) and would gather a cart of wood as he returnedhome. Two of the children, being sent by their mother, found his body near thebreak of the ride, overlooking Blackburn’s Fork Creek, where he spent his life.His death remains a mystery. September 1833 - In March of 1830 Catherine wroteher will and left two thirds of her estate to son Shirley and the balance to sonCaleb. By this time Catherine was near 80 years old, but she was to live anotherthree years before her death. She died in Cumberland in 1833 and her will wasprobated in December of that year.d/o John Shirley & Elizabeth, of Spottsylvania Co., VA.William Anderson was a tailor by trade. Nothing is known of his early yearsexcept that somewhere and from someone he learned the tailoring trade. Theearliest record thus far found for him was in 1769 and identifies him as a tailor.William was probably identified as a tailor in the Cumberland records becauseanother William also lived at that time in Cumberland and this was a means ofkeeping the two men apart. William made a few additional purchases of land to go with his share of hisfather’s estate, but never was a large land owner. He apparently kept is familyby his tailoring trade, although his sons probably did work the land. One of thelast records found for William while he was alive is recorded in SpotsylvaniaCounty. In September of 1794 he purchased a Negro woman named Bess fromhis father-in-law. John Shirley was to have full use of the woman until his deathand then she was to go to William or his heirs. Family tradition lists fourteenchildren for William and Catherine, however proof for only eleven has beenfound. William taught at least two of his sons the art involved in tailoring. Hemay have taught other young men as well as several of his brothers descendantswere also tailors. Of his sons, it is known that James and William were tailors.Most of the other six boys became farmers when they were grown, and one inlater years became a preacher. It is not known if any of the Anderson children received a formal education.The records of Cumberland do not tell if there was a school where the childrencould attend. It is known however, that they could all read and write because oflater records found. Perhaps Catherine and William served as school teachers totheir young brew.One wonders what the cause of William’s death might have been. He was underFifty yrs. of age at his death in 1795. Many illnesses were common place in thelate 1700’s however, and because of it few people lived into their sixties andseventies. Whatever the cause of death, William died in Cumberland betweenMay 17 and June 22. Cumberland Co., VA, Will Book 3, pg. 62. Will Book 9, pg.337. Catherine continued to live on the homeplace and raise her family. AtWilliam’s death at least four of his children were young enough that they requireda guardian. Their older brother John played this role until at least 1805 whentheir mother became their guardian. John also became executor of his father’sestate as William had died interstate. She is survived by her sons, L.P.,H.R., Davis, and Ashley Thweatt of this city; 5 sisters, Mrs. J. E. Gatlin, Mrs. J. D. King, and Miss Ella Mai Kirkpatrick of Franklin, TN, Mrs. John Chadion of Mt.Pleasant, TN, & Mrs. John Parrison of this city.Services were held this morning at the home at 10 o’clock with Edler F.W. Smith in charge. The remains were forwarded to Franklin, TN for interment in Mr.Hope Cemetery.She was the widow of the late Ashley P. Thweatt who was long engaged in the mercantile business in Franklin.She was born in Williamson Co., TN the daughter of Constantine Davis Kirkpatrick & Henrietta Tennessee Reams.
