THE STORE WITH THE ISLAND FLAVOR

ACROSS THE BORDERby ethel snyder

President and Mrs. Johnson'strip to Mexico a while back re -minded me of an amazing exper-ience I had years ago. I was driv-ing back to Sanibelfrom Arizona,my newly acquired red cockerwith me. When we arrived at ElPaso, it seemed like a good ideato park the car, walk across theInternational Bridge and exploreCuidad Juarez. So I did. All theofficials at both the Mexican andAmerican booths had to pet and

mate a fuss over Dolly VardenSoutherndown, who was a hand-some pup and adored attention.

Juarez was fascinating. Me-xican women, with their headstied in kerchiefs, made a to-doover Dolly Varden. We windowshopped. We loved not knowinga word anyone was saying! Wegot friendly nods and smilesfrom all sides, but after enoughsight seeing, we were ready toreturn to the car. But wherewas the parking lot? By this timeI hadn't the remotest idea wherethe American border was! I ask-

ISLANDERed several passersby but sinceI was speaking English, they in-variably smiled, shook theirheads, shrugged sholders andhurried on. After several futileattemps I started to look for atraffic cop, but they seemed asextinct as the dodo} There justweren't any!

I knew I'd find that bridgesomehow, even if I hadn't rightat that moment. And just when Ithought this, a very alert lookingyoung man came into view. Istopped him, waggled my thumb, raised my eyebrows and said, much to my own surprise, "EtadUnis?" He understood. He wag-gled HIS thumb, raised HIS eye-brows and pointed in the oppos-ite direction from the way I wasgoing, and finished up by noddinghis head.

It was not far to the Bridgeand the trip back seemed short-er. (We walked faster!) It justwould not have seemed possibleto have such an experience justwalking over a bridge! But anInternational Bridge, of course, isn't just a bridge. It connectstwo different worlds.
