CARNEGIE • SUMMER 2006 37

AN ANNIVERSARY IS A GOOD TIME to indulge in the luxury oflooking back; and, as I approach my one-year anniversary as pres-ident of Carnegie Museums, I can’t help but recollect what was socompelling a year ago as I considered this wonderful opportunity.

I have always believed that museums really do matter. Theyallow us to preserve pieces of our past in order to constantlylearn from that past; and they provide us with countless creativeforums through which we can study, question, and better under-stand our world today. From what I knew of CarnegieMuseums of Pittsburgh a year ago, it boasted a collection oftruly exceptional museums. And I was right.

I also believed that the Pittsburgh region was exceptionally fortu-nate to have Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh at its culturalcore. I was quite right about that, too. One year later, whatexcites me most about our future are the countless opportunitieswe have to further leverage our collective resources, brainpower, creative energy, and convictions to impact the lives of people inthis community and around the world in even more meaningfulways. That’s what exceptional museums do.

Many people share my excitement and actively support theconvictions of our museums, as evidenced on these special DonorAppreciation pages. Among those committed individuals, corpora-tions, and foundations are Dick and Prosser Mellon and theirdedicated team at the Richard King Mellon Foundation.

Over the past year, the Richard King Mellon Foundation hasgiven $3 million in support of Powdermill Nature Reserve and, most recently, $750,000 for Carnegie Museum of Art’s Fierce

Friends exhibition. The Foundation also rallied the communityto launch Pittsburgh Roars, a celebration of the region’s manycultural venues, events, and attractions conceived during earlydiscussions about Fierce Friends and its “animal” appeal. And in2004, the Foundation pledged $3 million towards the Museumof Natural History’s Dinosaurs in Their World project. All told, the Richard King Mellon Foundation has supportedCarnegie Museums’ collective mission with nearly $30 millionof gifts and grants since 1970.

We are indeed grateful to the Mellon family for their decades ofleadership, friendship, and support. Their generosity inspires us,and it no doubt has inspired countless others in this community to do as they have done: support the cultural and educationalinstitutions that really matter. That’s what good leaders do.

We are heartened by the generosity of all of our donors, andemboldened by their faith in the important work we do atCarnegie Museums—work that we simply could not do withthem. Our donors truly do lead by example through their support and friendship, and they help make our community abetter place. For that, we are sincerely grateful.

David M. HillenbrandPresident, Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh

EACH YEAR, AS I LOOK BACK at the exhibitions, events, programs, and partnerships our four museums have undertaken I am amazed at what they achieve—and 2005 was no exception.

Carnegie Museum of Natural History painstakingly dismantledits dinosaur exhibits so the specimens could be conserved andconstruction could begin on the new exhibit hall that will houseDinosaurs in Their World.

Carnegie Museum of Art received international acclaim whenits current exhibition Fierce Friends: Artists & Animals, 1750-

1900, opened at The Van Gogh Museum in October to a reviewthat labeled it “outstanding.”

Carnegie Science Center celebrated the 50th anniversary of The

Miniature Railroad & Village®, one of the region’s most popularexhibits, and launched a new public awareness campaign toremind us all that “Science Happens” everywhere, every day.

And The Andy Warhol Museum formed a partnership withAlcoa that took an exhibition of Warhol’s art to three Russiancities and launched an online teaching tool that will helpeducators around the world develop creative and criticalthinking skills in their students.

All of these accomplishments—and many more—were achievedlast year thanks to the more than $26.7 million raised for generaloperating support and restricted purposes—51 percent more thanwas raised in 2004. Our 2005 Annual Sustaining Fund gifts andmemberships totaled $5.5 million thanks to increases from ourPatrons Circle members (up 7 percent) and our corporate donors(up 9 percent).

Because of the generous contributions we received last year, wewere able to meet many of the museum’s basic operating needs, which gave our directors, curators, and staff the freedom tostrategize, build for the future, and focus on fostering innovativepartnerships and developing stimulating exhibitions, just a few ofwhich I mentioned above.

Some of the key people I want to thank for helping us reach thislevel of funding are:

Janie Thompson, chair of the Development Committee andTrustee/Board Annual Giving Campaign

Pete Veeder, chair of the Annual Sustaining Fund

Debbie Dick, chair of the Individual Gifts Committee

Chris Carson, co-chair of the Individual Gifts Committee

My heartfelt thanks goes out to each of these individuals, as wellas to all of the other donors, members, volunteers, organizations, corporations, and foundations who honored Carnegie Museumsin 2005 with their generous gifts.

“You have to feed the mind as well as the belly,” says Demetrios (Jim) Patrinos, and he’s a man who should know. Jim is the owner of Pittsburgh’s famous restaurantchain, Primanti Brothers. He bought the Strip District sandwich shop in 1974 whenhe was just 24 years old. Today, there are 12 Primanti’s locations throughout thePittsburgh region and two in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Jim is also the president of his family’s business, Patrinos Painting Company in Bethel Park. Jim’s wife Kathleenvolunteers as a docent for Carnegie Museum of Art, and they support CarnegieMuseums as members of the President’s Society.

“Like a good menu, the museums offer a bit of everything,” says Kathe, “and theykeep Pittsburgh on the cutting edge, enabling it to compete with other major citiesas a visitor destination for museum-goers and culture-seekers. We may be knownfor our dinosaurs, but this city is certainly not a dinosaur.”

“I remember coming to the museums on school field trips when I was a kid,” saysJim. “Back then of course, it was all about the dinosaurs for me. Today, there’s somuch more that keeps me coming back.” He credits his wife Kathe for getting theminvolved with the museums. “Over the years, Kathe’s involvement with the Museumof Art has created a cultural awareness in our home that we didn’t have before. It’seasy to give money, but it’s not easy to give time. She does the hard part, and I dothe easy part.”

Kathe believes that her husband’s Greek heritage contributes to his innate sense ofthe beauty in life. “I do think that being raised Greek and learning about my family’sroots has increased my awareness of ancient civilizations and helped me develop anappreciation for art, sculpture, and architecture,” acknowledges Jim. “In Pittsburgh, the four Carnegie Museums are the closest a lot of people ever get to Greece, Italy, orFrance and all the rich history and beauty they’ve contributed to the world. Throughtheir collections, exhibitions, classes, and events, the museums really educate andenlighten the community.”

RAY AND JONEEN BETLER WITH JOANNA HAAS, HENRY BUHL, JR.,DIRECTOR OF CARNEGIE SCIENCE CENTER (RIGHT)

“ This is a wonderful asset for families and youth

in our community. Every company whose employees have

children should be supporting Carnegie Science Center.”

Ray Betler

“One of my passions is providing more opportunities foryoung people to appreciate science, math, andengineering,” says Ray Betler, an engineer and presidentof Total Transit Systems of Bombardier Transportation, a world leader in mass transit systems. “Science andengineering are fundamental to our business—and I feela strong connection to the Science Center’s mission toprovide exciting educational opportunities throughhands-on science exhibits and activities. When you visit, you can actually feel the excitement and energy ofchildren while they’re learning.”

Bombardier first became involved with Carnegie ScienceCenter in 1994, when it was still fairly new. Over the years, the more Ray has learned about the Science Center, themore enthusiastic he has become about providing sup-port—through his company, as a member of the Board ofDirectors, and as a donor along with his wife, Joneen.

In November 2005, Bombardier sponsored and Ray andJoneen helped organize Locomotion, the 50th anniversarycelebration of the Miniature Railroad & Village®. Like somany others from western Pennsylvania, Ray cherisheshis memories of visiting the miniature train display as achild in its original home at Buhl Planetarium. He wantschildren today to have the same sense of wonder whenthey visit Carnegie Science Center.

In fact, Ray often reaches out to other companies in thetransportation industry to encourage their support of therailroad display, but he believes strongly that any com-pany in the region can easily make a connection with theScience Center. “This is a wonderful asset for families andyouth in our community,” he says.

“Supporting Carnegie Museums is a quality of life issue,”says attorney Cynthia Kernick. “One of the things thatenhances a life is having beautiful things around us.Through their amazing exhibitions and incredible varietyof programs and events, the four museums play a criticalrole in increasing the enjoyment of life for both childrenand adults.”

A contributor to Carnegie Museums since 1999, Cynthiabelieves that The Andy Warhol Museum is particularlyimportant for raising vital issues that otherwise might notbe addressed. “The Warhol makes us wake up and payattention. Director Tom Sokolowski and his staff do a lot tochallenge Pittsburgh’s staid ways,”she says. “They make usthink about ourselves and consider how we might be better.”

She cites Without Sanctuary, an exhibition of lynchingphotography, as a perfect example of The Warhol’s impor-tance to Pittsburgh. “I was there for the opening,” explainsCynthia. “The gospel choir on the first floor was etheral, but then I felt physically ill viewing the postcards, and Itold Tom. He said, ‘Sit down and listen to the music. You’llfeel better.’” Cynthia says that Tom was right. “It was abrilliant idea to have the choir singing as a way to tran-scend the anguish caused by seeing the postcards. I wentback three more times after that because I felt it was impor-tant to face them.”

While Cynthia is a strong supporter of The Warhol, herpassion for the arts—and, as an attorney, for justice—inspired her to become involved with Carnegie Museum ofArt as well. Several years ago, she provided thousands ofhours of pro bono work to ensure the return of 80,000photographic negatives to famous Pittsburgh Courier pho-tographer Teenie Harris. Afterward, she assisted the Harrisfamily when they transferred Harris’ work to CarnegieMuseum of Art.

“There are lots of surprises awaiting visitors to Pittsburgh, and the four Carnegie Museums are a great example,” saysAnna Doering. “People still have preconceived ideas aboutthis city, and institutions like The Warhol have put Pitts-burgh on the map in an exciting way. The museums aredefinitely a “destination” for residents and visitors alike.”

In fact, the museums and the cultural, educational, andentertainment opportunities they provide were one ofthe factors that helped Anna and her husband KevinCrawford make the decision to move to Pittsburgh fromPhiladelphia in 1998 when Anna was offered a job atChatham College where she is now the vice president forDevelopment and Alumnae Affairs. Kevin is a softwarearchitect at the University of Pittsburgh.

They began their relationship with the museums soonafter arriving in Pittsburgh because of the value of thefamily membership. It’s particularly important with twochildren, Sean (10) and Zoe (9 months). “The CarnegieMuseums’ family membership provides one-stop enter-tainment shopping,” says Kevin. “There is so muchvariety among the four museums.”

“No matter which museum we choose to visit, we canalways do something as a family, and that’s really impor-tant,” adds Anna. Recently, Anna and Kevin increasedtheir support to the museums, “It was an easy decision tomake,” they say, “because we get back so much morethan we give.”

“No matter which museum we choose to visit, we can always

do something as a family, and that’s really important.”

Married in their eighties andnow in their nineties, Jimand Bege Alexander areboth long-time supportersof Pittsburgh, the arts, andCarnegie Museums.

“In the days when Pittsburghwas producing steel, it wasthe most vibrant city in thecountry,” says Jim. “Thestreet lights were on all daybecause of the smog, butthe city was alive! Every-thing was happening here, and Carnegie Museums wasa part of that vibrancy.”

“I remember years ago going tothe Museum of Art for a Picassoshow,” adds Bege. “The person who took me said, ‘You may not like everything yousee, but find one painting you like and enjoy it.’ That was good advice, and itlaunched my interest in contemporary art.”

Jim is a retired Managing Editor of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. A native of Florida,Bege is a painter and a sculptor, and has been a member of the Museum of Art’sWomen’s Committee since 1957. She is also the widow of John T. Galey, a formerCarnegie Institute trustee. The Galey Geology Program Series at Carnegie Museumof Natural History’s Powdermill Nature Reserve was funded in John’s honor by thebequest of Margaret Galey, Bege’s daughter.

“It’s absolutely necessary to support this cultural treasure,” says Bege. “The museumshave been an important part of my life for more than 50 years and they should befor others too.”

“The museums are ever growing with new ideas to show, explore, or teach,” Jimadds. “Art, science, beauty, imagination—all the things that enrich life—wouldn’tbe available if not for an institution like Carnegie Museums.”

The Alexanders regularly attend museum events and are members of the CorniceSociety. In addition to Bege’s bequests to Carnegie Museum of Art and PowdermillNature Reserve, the couple donated a beautiful Nakashima table to CarnegieMuseum of Art through a series of gifts of undivided fractional interests.

When it comes to dinosaurs, Mark Hastie continues to see them through the eyes ofa child. “When I was a kid, we didn’t watch a lot of television and we certainly didn’thave exposure to the Internet. A trip to Carnegie Museum of Natural History was ahuge thing. I loved the dinosaurs so much that my parents started buying me all kindsof dinosaur books and toys. Eventually, I passed those toys on to my son, who hasthe same fascination with dinosaurs that I did.”

Today, Mark is able to give his employees a chance to share the museum experienceswith their own children. He and his brother Matt are co-owners of Gullifty’s Restaurant, and corporate members of Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, which, among otherthings, allows their employees to visit all four museums at a two-for-one admissionprice. “They really appreciate it,” says Mark, “especially the ones with kids.”

Mark originally joined Carnegie Museums because he realized how often his ownfamily was going to the museums and how much they enjoyed their visits. “Themuseums have so much to offer. In a single afternoon, you can get a wide range ofexperiences. You can learn about natural history, or art, and you can see how thingsreally work. The perfect sequel to the movie Jurassic Park is to come to the Museumof Natural History and discover that what you’ve just seen is real.”

Mark plans to continue supporting Carnegie Museums through his corporate member-ship because of what it offers his family and because he believes the museums helpmake Pittsburgh a destination city. “When it comes to ‘first day’ attractions, I don’tthink there are many cities that rival ours. We’ve got the symphony, professional sports, concerts, and world-class culture. The museums give us international recognition. This is the first place I bring my out-of-town guests.”

“Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh is one of the mostimportant cultural institutions in the city, and it givesPittsburgh a broader appeal,” says Jacqui Morby. “TheCarnegie International and The Andy Warhol Museumattract a lot of visitors from outside the Pittsburghregion, including many international visitors. Warhol’swork in particular strikes a chord with foreigners.”

Contemporary art such as Warhol’s has appealed toJacqui and her husband Jeff for many years, so whenthe couple moved to Pittsburgh from the West Coast18 years ago, it seemed only natural for them to getinvolved with Carnegie Museums. Currently, Jacqui is amember of the Board of The Andy Warhol Museum. Shefinds Warhol fascinating because he was a forerunnerto what is happening in the contemporary art world.

“Warhol was so prolific and versatile through all medi-ums—film, silkscreen, photography—much like themulti-media artists today. And his popularity in the

world has grown immensely since the opening of TheWarhol,” she says. “You can see it in the prices his piecesare getting—they’re skyrocketing.”

On a recent art trip to Dallas, Ft. Worth, St. Louis, andMinneapolis, the Morbys were impressed by the numberof Warhol works they encountered. “It was unbelievablehow many Warhols we saw. Every one of the six or sevenmuseum we went into had Warhols prominently dis-played, including some I had never seen before,” saysJacqui.

The Morby’s personal art collection includes abstractpaintings and works on paper, starting with theAmerican abstract artists of the ‘30s known as the ParkStreet Cubists. “I look for beauty in abstract art—in itscomposition, its color, and its interesting textures.Whether it’s a Rauschenberg or a more contemporaryartist, my idea of beauty has changed through lookingat contemporary art.”

When Elizabeth (Betty) Mertz was a young girl, her mother used to drop her off at “the museum” for a day of exploration. “The museum” was the SmithsonianInstitution in Washington, D.C., where Betty learned to appreciate living in a citythat’s known for its robust cultural environment. She feels the same way aboutPittsburgh, where she has resided since her marriage to Robert Mertz in 1956.

“Pittsburgh is an excellent place for children to grow up,” she says. “It’s smallenough to be comfortably livable, but it’s got everything you could ask for.”

As a new Pittsburgh resident, Betty was drawn immediately to Carnegie Museumof Natural History. “I started out as a visitor, and thought it might be a good placeto work,” she says. “I was trained in biology and anthropology, and after finishingmy doctorate at the University of Pittsburgh, I came looking for a job.”

Betty found a job as an assistant in the Educational Publications department whereshe worked for almost two decades. As a former employee, Betty believes it’sextremely important to support the work being done at the museum. “CarnegieMuseum of Natural History’s mission relates directly to the study of our wholeplanet’s geography and history,” she says. “And with its world-class dinosaurexhibit and all of its special programs for children, it attracts visitors from aroundthe globe and is a cultural and educational icon in Pittsburgh.”

She will always treasure her long-lasting association with Carnegie Museums.“Carnegie Museum of Natural History was a wonderful place to work. Whenever I walk down the Grand Staircase, I feel really grand! There’s nothing more usefulthan being a part of something that’s so important to the city.”

In 1989, Betty and her husband established the Robert and Elizabeth Mertz Fundat The Pittsburgh Foundation, which annually supports Carnegie Museum ofNatural History. Betty is also a Patrons Circle member.

“I literally grew up with the museums,” says Dr. CarolynEllis. “My mother was a docent at the Museum of Art, andI remember coming along with her to the museum whenshe was learning about the new exhibitions.”

Today, Carolyn and her husband, Charlie Masterson, haveextremely busy careers—she with a practice in internalmedicine, and he as a tax lawyer specializing in state andlocal taxes. Several years ago, they were invited to anevent to discuss the formation of the Carnegie MuseumAssociates—a new organization designed to get youngpeople involved in supporting Carnegie Museum of Art. It was a natural and immediate fit for the couple.

“We think the four Carnegie Museums are fabulous. There’ssuch a wide variety in the different institutions and they’reeach such a great resource—we enjoy all of them. It’s hard toimagine the City of Pittsburgh without them. It wouldn’t benearly as strong and vibrant as it is,” says Charlie.

While the couple appreciates all that the museums have tooffer, they especially enjoy attending exhibition openingsand hearing curators and artists offer insight into the exhibi-tions. “A great benefit of being a member of the Associatesis that you’re invited to receptions and events around thenew exhibitions,” says Charlie. “It makes them more inter-esting and adds a social aspect to the artistic experience ofthe shows.”

The couple’s involvement in the museums extends beyondart openings and private events. They are regular visitors, taking in as many exhibitions as possible throughout thecourse of the year. “Pittsburgh can’t live on the Steelersalone,” says Charlie. “Museums expand your horizonsbeyond the expected. We really love the four CarnegieMuseums and hope that Pittsburghers will continue tosupport them.”

“Growing up in Pittsburgh, it never dawned on us thatpeople who lived elsewhere didn’t have great museums. As children, we were able to take advantage of theMuseum of Natural History because others cared aboutit. Now it’s our turn to perpetuate this treasure so that future generations can appreciate it,” saysMichael Weiss.

Michael and his wife Gerrihave a special affinity forCarnegie Museum of NaturalHistory, and have been sup-porters and volunteers formany years. “As a child,I was fascinated with every-thing from the tiny bugs tothe enormous dinosaurs,”says Gerri. “Although I loveall the museums, I can sayunequivocally that myfavorite has always been theMuseum of Natural History.”

Gerri has devoted countless hours as a museum volun-teer, chairing the Carnegie On Tap fundraising event forseven years, serving on the planning committee for theCarnegie Gem & Mineral Show Gala for three years, and now serving as president of the newly formedFriends of Carnegie Museum of Natural History.

As supporters, Gerri and Michael both especially appre-ciate the opportunities they have to see the collectionsin an intimate setting. “We rarely miss the specialevents. It’s a nice way to see the exhibits in a smallergroup and to hear from the curators. Their passion fortheir work is so inspiring. They love what they do andthey share that love with us.”
