Some of the Bible versions represented in this catalogue originated in the USA and usually follow American English usage. Where these versions, for example the NRSV and NIV, have an alternative Anglicised text for the British market, those Cambridge editions which use it are flagged BRITISH TEXT.
To make it easy to identify the right Bible, this catalogue is organised first by version, and then by edition.

The NRSV Anglicized Edition was developed in the United States by an international team of translators, which included some Britons. While words and idioms were carefully chosen to be immediately comprehensible to all English speakers, the original text uses American English (US spelling, punctuation and numbering style). Some churches and schools may find this distracting, preferring British English. A comprehensive revision of the KJV, the RSV uses formal but understandable language. The English Standard Version is a revision of the RSV, first published in 2001. The forthcoming Cambridge editions announced here use the American spelling conventions of the original ESV.
Two new classicsIn 2008, Cambridge will introduce the ESV to its list of Bibles. This is the latest in a range of Bible versions presented in two classic Cambridge formats.
ESV Pitt Minion Reference EditionThe Pitt Minion is characterized by an elegant, slimline form containing text printed in a compact, yet readable font. The NASB (page 10), NKJV (page 12) and NIV (page 26) have recently come out in this format, and the ESV Pitt Minion Reference Edition will have the same text design and specifications when it is published in Autumn 2008.
ESV Wide-Margin Reference EditionWide-margin Bibles are another Cambridge speciality. The margins provide plenty of space for personal notes, and the Bibles are printed on paper that stands up well to note-taking. The ESV Wide-Margin Reference Edition will be published at the end of 2008 and be comparable to the NASB (page 11) and NKJV (page 13) Wide-Margin Reference Editions. Each of these new wide-margin editions is an enlargement of the Pitt Minion edition, so has exactly the same layout and pagination, with the bonus of a more extensive concordance.

A literal translation from the original texts, well suited to study because of its high level of accuracy to the source texts. ‘Like trying to hold water in my hands ... that’s what my first experience with the Cambridge Wide-margin Reference Bible was like. I expected the goatskin cover to be flexible, but this was ridiculous. Ridiculously good, that is. Wherever it wasn’t supported by my hand, this Bible gracefully plunged toward the floor, almost like it was wet. I half expected it to be dripping, but of course it wasn’t. Gilt edgesA decorative finishing style in which a gold-coloured metallic foil is applied to the edges of the pages after they have been cut and rubbed smooth. As an alternative, silver foil is often used for books bound in white. See also art-gilt edges.
Gilt lineA plain gold line or ‘frame’ on the inside covers.
India paperThe paper traditionally used for the best quality Bibles. The name is now generally used for papers that weigh less than 30 grammes per square metre (‘20lb’ paper in the USA).
Presentation pageA decorated page bound into a Bible or prayer book on which to record the name of the giver of the book, the name of the recipient and the date of the gift.
Pronunciation marksA phonetic system indicating how names should be pronounced, showing the vowel sounds and stressed syllables, as in a dictionary. These volumes are sometimes called ‘self-pronouncing’.
Red-letter editionA Bible in which the words of Christ are printed in red, a practice introduced in 1899 by the American publisher Dr Louis Klopsch.

GoatskinA beautiful and very durable top-quality, natural grain leather. Strong yet supple, it is used for the finest bindings. Traditionally known as ‘Morocco’ leather.
Calfskin leatherA traditional high-quality leather used in fine bindings. It is long-lasting, and its suppleness increases with use. Cambridge calfskin bindings use only top-grain leather.
French Morocco leatherCambridge uses this term for leather taken from a split hide, traditionally sheepskin but now usually calf or cowhide. Slightly thinner than other grades and therefore flexible and soft even when new. A French Morocco binding offers high quality real leather at an economical price.
Berkshire leatherA term for pigskin – the material most commonly used in bookbinding when ‘genuine leather’ is the description used.
Bonded leatherCambridge bonded leather is made from 100% real leather fibres, reconstituted with a strong resin bonding.
Imitation leatherAn attractive cover material with some visual and tactile resemblance to real leather, at a lower price.
Most Cambridge leather-bound Bibles and prayer books have flexible covers. Some of the larger ones – those described as ‘over boards’ – have a sturdy non-flexible binding.
