And Now A Word

The East

My Brothers,

As I'm writing this Grand Lodge is yet to happen so I

have nothing to report on it. May was a very productive

month. We held two Stated Communications, a Fel-

lowcraft degree and a Master Mason degree. I also had

the pleasure of presenting Pioneer Chapter 99 with a new

agreement of cohabitation with Winter Park Lodge going

until 2026.

Saints John Day will not be occurring in June like it nor-

mally does. This year it will be held on July 12th. St.

John's day in the past has been scheduled to coincide

with the official visit of the Grand Master to District 17.

However, the Grand Master had to schedule his official

visit on July 12th this year. For that reason we have had

to move the date of the Saints John Day Celebration to

July 12th. I hope no one visits the Lodge on June 21st

expecting to be fed breakfast and enjoy the program.

Likewise, I hope that everyone who normally attends

Saints John Day will be able to adjust their schedule to

attend on July 12th.

In May we made six new Master Masons. In the rest of

the year it is likely we will make as many if not more. In

my closing comments to these new Master Masons I em-

phasized the responsibility of a Master Mason to his

lodge. I explained to them that it is their responsibility to

maintain payment of their dues, that it is the bare mini-

mum of what a Master Mason has to do for his lodge. I

also communicated to them that many of their brothers

have dedicated a tremendous amount of work into getting

them to the point of Master Mason and that it was my

hope they would reciprocate that effort as a part of their

career as Master Masons. Brothers, especially new

Brothers, often don't know how or what they can do for

their lodge. I think that most of us learn by doing. A new

brother could help set up lodge, help in the kitchen, help

with grounds work, perhaps visit a sick and distressed

brother, Give a ride to a Brother who is no longer able to

drive themselves to lodge, promote Freemasonry to their

friends, and so on and.

We're coming into the summer season. It is going to be

very hot this summer. I have decided to issue a dress-

down policy. In June, July and August the Officers of the

The West

My Brothers,

I want to first and foremost thank all of the brothers

of both Winter Park & South Seminole Lodges for

their help with the Master Mason degree on May

24th. Between both Lodges, we raised 9 new Master

Masons, and several brothers from South Seminole

assisted in both sections of the degrees. It was won-

derful to see the cooperation between Lodges to en-

sure the best possible experience for our newest Mas-

ter Masons.

On a related note, I have noticed that sideline attend-

ance at degrees this year has been a little sparse. At

most of these I could count the number of sideliners

on both hands. We tell our EA’s that every member

in the Lodge is there to help and support them on

their Masonic journey, but with low attendance like

we’ve had, that statement seems to ring hollow. I un-

derstand that many of us are busy and that our cable-

tows only stretch so far, but if there is another reason

why you are not coming to degrees (or stated meet-

ings for that matter) please send me an email and let

me know. If there is a way I can address your issue

or concern, I will do my best to accommodate it.

the brothers who attend lodge that they dress more

More Words From...

The South

My Brothers,

As the former Lodge Secretary, and the current

“Assistant Secretary”, I would like to utilize this bully

-pulpit to take up the cause of delinquent dues. My

Brothers, I realize it is “only” June but a rather shock-

ing situation is rearing its ugly head… we have over

ninety, yes, NINETY Brothers whom have not yet

paid their 2014 dues! While it may feeeeeel like we

are having non-stop degrees, we are nowhere NEAR

raising the numbers of new Brothers to offset this po-

tential erosion. Are you one of the ninety? Are you

sure? When was the last time you looked at your dues

card? You would be amazed (or perhaps not) at the

number of Brothers who THINK they have renewed

but in reality, have not.

Thank you my Brothers!,

From The Secretary:

Here is a phrase that every member of Winter Park

Lodge should know by heart: "Second and Fourth

Tuesday; dinner at 6:30." Pretty easy, right? There

are many times when I find out that someone is inter-

ested in joining the Fraternity but they don't know

what to do. Second and Fourth Tuesday; dinner at

6:30. That's the answer. If you haven't been to the

lodge for a while, or if you didn't know that we now

always eat before our meetings, then you should re-

member Second and Fourth Tuesday; dinner at 6:30.

If someone asks for a petition, don't tell them you'll

bring it to them. Tell them Second and fourth Tues-

day; dinner at 6:30. When your wife asks you on

Masonic Trivia - June 2014

Masons in Space

While many Masons reach lofty height in their careers, the following have by far soared highest:

Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin (Apollo 11); Gordon Cooper (Mercury 9, Gemini 5); Donn Eisele (Apollo 7); John Glenn (Mercury 6);

Virgil I. “Gus” Grissom (Mercury 4, Gemini 3, Apollo 1); James B. Irwin (Apollo 15); Edgar Mitchell (Apollo 14); Walter

Schirra (Mercury 8, Gemini 6, Apollo 7); Thomas P. Stafford (Gemini 6, 9, Apollo 10, Apollo-Soyuz); Paul Weitz (Skylab 2,

Challenger STS-6)

Additionally, Bro. Aldrin carried a Scottish Rite flag given to him by the Supreme Council to the moon. The 3 Mercury Masons

(Grissom, Cooper & Schirra) were members of Bahia Shrine here in Orlando. Copies of their petitions are on display in the Ba-

hia museum.
