Recently, I heard a sermon where the preacher was sharing a story about how a young adult had noted in her work that she had seen God in many places, but mostly “in the disappearing space between people.” It got me thinking about a church word that we use from time to time around here. The word incarnation or incarnation speaks of God in the Flesh. Specifically, we confess in the Nicene Creed that Jesus “was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human.” It means that God has taken on flesh. I wonder if we are shying away from the flesh too much these days. Part of what the incarnation means to me is that God is found in human contact. There is a lot of conversation these days about how much time our culture spends with technology these days. Katie and I have become aware that when we are with one another, we often get sidetracked by our phones, by our iPad, by our computers. I who have a difficult time with multitasking am the worst at this. Oh, I am sure that God can be present in and through those devices. But it is not promised in quite the same way as God being truly present when the space between people begins to disappear. The times I am with one of my children at the Pediatricians office they ask how many hours a day are spent playing video games, watching television using social media. The recommendation is no more than 2 hours a day. I am not sure where they come up with that number but we are all aware that our children are connecting more through social media and less through face to face contact. Is this a problem? I suppose time will tell. But what I do believe is that there is something important about the incarnational work that we have as Christians. Ministry works best when there are fewer things between us and the other person: fewer devices, fewer distractions, and fewer interruptions. Oh yes, God can be present wherever God chooses to be present. But church and other places we can come face to face with one another is a different interaction, it is God in the flesh. I took heart the other day when I heard one of my friends talk about how her twenty something son gets together with friends and they all put their phones in the middle. The first person to use their phone whether for texting, checking the web, or taking a phone call gets to pay the bill. Don’t get me wrong, I love the advantages of technology as much as anyone. But a face to face action with my neighbor, family, and friends still brings something different to the table. There is so much to distract that I wonder how many times we miss God in our neighbor because of the various kinds of distance technology brings. So some questions and some challenges. What if we left our cell phones at home on Sunday morning? If you are not on call for something, how much will you miss until you get home? Can we take a technology Sabbath for a few hours with your children on Sunday or another day and replace that time with face to face time? Can we give up the efficient from time to time for the sake of experiencing God in the flesh in our neighbor or in the then “disappearing space” between you and another.

We usually make up a lot of ground with your generous giving at Easter. Even though you gave an extra $12,000 for Easter, we did not get a lot of money on the other Sundays. This is alarming because we have never been this far in debt after Easter.

The other scary thing is that we are heading toward summer when attendance and giving drop drastically. If you want to ensure that your gift gets to us, even when you are enjoying your summer adventures, we have two great ways to make that happen. Simply Giving withdraws money directly from your checking or savings account. Clover Donations charges your credit card each month. E-mail me at the address below or call during usual business hours and I can get you set up in five minutes.

View all the appointment dates and times, schedule your session and make changes, if necessary through our Web site when the time comes. Although we do not have scheduling set up online yet, please keep August 25, 26 & 27, October 23, 24 & 25, and November 24 & 25 in mind for your pictures.

VOLUNTEERS

Landscape Help! This summer on the first Saturday of each month, from 9:00 am until 12:00 noon, we will meet to work to keep our property looking friendly and inviting. There are jobs to fit everyone’s physical ability and plenty of fun fellowship to be enjoyed, not to mention tasty snacks to be eaten. Training is always provided for those who want it. You can stay for as little or as long as you have available. Plan to join us at least once this summer and feel the warmth of knowing you helped make St. Mark’s beautiful!

The ‘landscape map’ is posted on the bulletin board near the kitchen for those who are looking for a ‘place of their own’ to tend. Please sign up for the area you would like to take care of this summer (yes, you can sign up with your friends and make a day of it!).

Gracias to the Perez family (Aurora, Alex, Amelia and Angelica) for the wonderful Cinco de Mayo celebration! The food was delicious, the crowd was amazing and learning to play Lotoria was fun. Thank you to Neal Buckaloo and grandson Zach Becker for helping with the decorations and Dick Thiel, Patti Berg, and the whole Heide family for the serving help and to the wonderful people who stayed after the event to help clean up (I apologize! I was too tired to remember to write down the names …. You know who you are and I consider you my special angels!) Thank you for a very successful fellowship event!

Thank you to the May Messenger assembly crew: Helen and Roy Jeremiah, Ronni Tvedten, Bill Thordarson, Del Schueneman, Don Donaldson, Donna Nelson, Mary Dey, Patti Berg, Diana Pickering and Marilyn Walli. Your dedication to keeping our congregation informed is greatly appreciated. Again, I thank Marilyn and Diana for preparing the envelopes for counting and delivery and to Patti Berg for delivering it all to the BMEU. Bless each of you! Before everyone heads to ‘the lake’ this summer I want to thank each of our volunteers for the time and effort you each gave during services, during clean up days, during fellowship events, during Messenger assembly events, during the week when servicing pews and during those long winter days when I called and you answered. Thank you! You are greatly appreciated.

Don’t forget, we need volunteers all summer, too!

Please use your hands to do God’s work.

Blessings,Kris Hendron, Volunteer Coordinator
